2012 Fantasy outlooks: Indianapolis Colts

The last time the Colts took a quarterback at No. 1 overall was 1998 with Peyton Manning, and they hope the addition of Andrew Luck this year will reap similar rewards. Manning took the Colts to two Super Bowls during his tenure, winning one, and had multiple playoff appearances.

As a rookie, Manning passed for 3,739 yards, 26 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. We're expecting Luck to have better stats than that, but don't expect him to be like last year's No. 1 overall pick, Cam Newton, who had 4,051 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and 706 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Newton finished with 396 Fantasy points and was among nine quarterbacks to top 300 points last year. But finding success as a rookie quarterback hasn't been easy, especially for No. 1 overall picks.

There have been nine quarterbacks selected at No. 1 overall since 2001 (Michael Vick, David Carr, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Alex Smith, JaMarcus Russell, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford and Newton). Only Newton and Bradford topped 200 Fantasy points as a rookie.

Now, to be fair, Palmer didn't play at all as a rookie, and Vick, Manning, Smith and Russell saw limited playing time. Stafford also didn't finish his rookie season due to an injury. But rookie quarterbacks tend to struggle, especially if you don't have mobility like Newton.

In comparing Luck and Robert Griffin III, we would rather have the Redskins starter in seasonal Fantasy leagues, and Luck should be better in dynasty formats. Griffin should have better Fantasy stats this year with his rushing ability, but Luck projects long-term as the better Fantasy option, maybe as early as 2013.

For this year, he should be a mediocre Fantasy option at best. He has decent weapons in Reggie Wayne, Coby Fleener and Austin Collie, and he should be throwing a lot with the Colts trailing in games. But Luck is not going to post overwhelming stats in his first year and should only be drafted with a late-round pick in seasonal formats.

Sleeper ... Coby Fleener, tight end
Rarely does a rookie quarterback get his No. 1 receiver from college on the same team in their first year, but that's what the Colts have with Luck and Fleener. The Colts took Fleener in the second round of the NFL Draft out of Stanford, and he should shine with Luck much in the same way Dallas Clark did with Manning. Fleener is a tight end with a similar skill set to Clark in that both are standout receivers. In 2011, Fleener averaged 19.6 yards per reception with 10 touchdowns, which followed up an eight-touchdown campaign in 2010. It might be hard for Fleener to become a No. 1 Fantasy option right away, but he's worth a late-round pick in most standard leagues based on potential alone. He should be drafted with a middle- to late-round pick in dynasty/keeper leagues and a first-round pick in rookie-only formats. He might be the best rookie receiver/tight end this year.

Breakout ... Donald Brown, running back
We often wondered how Brown would do if Joseph Addai was out of the picture, and we got a glimpse in 2011 when Addai missed multiple weeks with a hamstring injury. Brown ended up doing a nice job with double digits in Fantasy points in three of his final five games. This year Addai is gone, and Brown should open as the starter while sharing carries with Delone Carter. Brown has the chance for a career year, and we consider him a No. 3 Fantasy running back on Draft Day. He is not someone you want start on a weekly basis, but with a favorable matchup he could be a great fill-in rusher. Carter also should be considered a sleeper since the Colts could be more run-heavy than in years past under new coach Chuck Pagano.

Bust ... Reggie Wayne, wide receiver
Wayne probably should have jumped ship and left the Colts since Manning, Clark, Addai and Pierre Garcon are gone, but he signed a three-year deal to stay in Indianapolis. It's great that he will finish his career with one team, but Wayne is done as a top-flight Fantasy receiver. Not only does he lose Manning and get a rookie in Luck, but he's a step slower at 33 (he'll be 34 in November). Wayne struggled in 2011 with just four touchdowns and only three games with double digits in Fantasy points. Losing Manning for the season didn't help, but Wayne was due to see a decline in production. The change in quarterback likely accelerates that process. Now, he will still have a good week or two during the season, and he's still a quality option in PPR formats (he has at least 75 catches in every year since 2004). But don't expect Wayne to be over 1,200 receiving yards and reach double digits in touchdowns. He's just not that guy anymore, and he should only be drafted as a No. 3 Fantasy receiver with a mid-round pick.

Defensively, the Colts are going to go through growing pains, even with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis still around. So much of their success in 2012 will depend on Luck attacking defenses effectively. He should do well against teams lacking a strong pass rush but that accounts for five opponents. From the Bears in Week 1 to a season-ending set of games against the Texans twice with the Chiefs in Week 16, the Colts' schedule is littered with pass rushers aiming at Luck. That should make it tough for him to thrive in his first season.

Training camp topics

The Colts offense has basically looked the same since 1998 with Manning running the show. It will definitely have a new look this season, and the changes should be fun to watch.

All eyes will be on Luck and his development, but Fantasy owners should pay attention to how Collie does since he will now start in place of Garcon. Rookie T.Y. Hilton could also make an impact, and the Colts are high on Donnie Avery, who is trying to make a comeback after failed stints with St. Louis and Tennessee.

The other thing to watch will be the split in reps with Brown and Carter and whether or not Carter can turn into a touchdown vulture with his short-yardage ability. Where Fleener lines up should also be interesting since he could see time at receiver.

The Colts are in a rebuilding mode after going 2-14 last year. Things should definitely improve and hopefully Fantasy owners can benefit from some better offensive production this year.

Jamoris Slaughter cleared for camp

(3:17 pm ET) Browns rookie safety Jamoris Slaughter has been cleared for training camp, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Slaughter ruptured his Achilles tendon playing for Notre Dame last season. 

"I've been doing all of the workouts, my leg feels great," he said. "I'm looking forward to training camp."


Falcons make a swap at tight end

(3:13 pm ET) The Falcons signed ex-Jaguars tight end Colin Cloherty, waiving tight end Anthony Miller in the process. Cloherty has played sparingly over four NFL seasons while Miller has bounced around since being signed out of college by the Broncos last year. 

Giants RB coach preaches competition, tandem

(1:04 pm ET) Giants running back coach Jerald Ingram confirmed what most Fantasy owners already assumed: Second-year speedster David Wilson and big back Andre Brown will compete for playing time but both will wind up getting work. The key on how those reps will be split might come down to just how improved Wilson's pass protection skills are. 

Ingram on Wilson: "He's in a position to compete to be the guy. He has the talent, has the speed, has a few plays from a year ago underneath his belt. Everything we gauge is kind of like in college with spring ball, but once we put the pads on, we'll see who is physical, who's determined to make plays out there."

Ingram on Brown: "He's been waiting a lifetime around here (to play). We brought him in here because he can catch the ball, he can run, he can do a lot of things and be a complete running back here. And he's definitely a true every down kind of guy because he's got size, speed and quickness."

Ingram wrapped up his comments to ESPN by hinting that the Giants will utilize both backs in a "thunder and lightning-type situation." 


Does risk/reward factor make Darren McFadden draft-worthy?

(12:36 pm ET) Every year we find reasons to like Darren McFadden and every year he finds a way to disappoint us. In 2011 he totaled five touchdowns and over 750 yards in seven games before messing up his foot. In 2012 he managed to stay healthy for 12 games (tied for the second-most in his career) but sported the worst rushing average of his career and scored a total of three times. 

This year McFadden enters training camp for the Raiders healthy and with dollar signs in his eyes. If he has a sensational year he will land a nice chunk of change from a team probably not called the Raiders because of their salary cap issues. If he doesn't, he could still earn a decent contract but probably will be used in a part-time role elsewhere in the league. McFadden has to know this and should put up a good effort. Helping his case is an Oakland coaching staff that redesigned the offense to his strengths including scrapping the zone-blocking scheme that seemingly baffled McFadden last year. 

McFadden's always a risky proposition -- just ask the Fantasy owners who took him the past two seasons -- but a late Round 3/early Round 4 selection might be the right price for a player aiming for a monster showcase season. 


Is Jermichael Finley worth a late-round pick?

(12:21 pm ET) Last year Jermichael Finley made more headlines for his drops than his outstanding play. He finished with two touchdowns and under 700 yards for the Packers. But in 2011 he was in a contract year and posted career-highs in yardage (767) and touchdowns (eight), even though he had only six games with eight-plus Fantasy points and four came in his final five that season. 

Finley is once again entering a contract year with much to prove. Reports this offseason say he's looked "excellent" after putting on some weight and could be in line for plenty of playing time with a bump in targets with Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and Tom Crabtree no longer part of the Green Bay passing game. While it's tough to expect him to finally break out after several seasons of him being called a "breakout candidate," Finley isn't a bad late-round choice as part of a tight end tandem for Fantasy owners. It's a darn good bargain considering where people drafted him in previous years. 


Kenny Britt heading for make-or-break year?

(12:12 pm ET) Kenny Britt is entering the most important training camp of his career free of legal woes and injuries. His timing's perfect -- he's entering a contract year. As I noted in my list of Fantasy players motivated for a big payday, Britt has the most to gain and lose among those with expiring contracts. He's never had more than 45 catches or 775 yards in a single year but he also has made some incredible plays when he has played without limitations. 

Britt had eight or more Fantasy points in four of his last six games last season and began 2011 with a pair of double-digit Fantasy point efforts before tearing his ACL. The thinking here is that Britt could focus on his game for one year to net a large payout (or at least a franchise tag) from the Titans. Who knows how reliable he'll be after that but for 2013, Fantasy owners shouldn't shy away from him in drafts. He's worth the mid-round gamble. 


Report: Tim Tebow won't have meaningful role

(12:02 pm ET) It is believed that the Patriots' Tim Tebow will make the final roster out of training camp but serve exclusively as the squad's No. 3 quarterback. ESPN thinks he'll end up being inactive for most games. 

Danny Coale hoping to be ready for camp

(11:45 am ET) Cowboys receiver Danny Coale is aiming to participate in the first day of training camp with his team after tearing his ACL last November. Coale did not work in any of the team's offseason practices but says he's "heading in the right direction" according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Cliff Avril should be ready for camp

(11:43 am ET) Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril participated in the team's final minicamp practice last week and should be ready for the start of training camp in late July, per the Seattle Times. Avril was suffering from plantar fascia. 

Malcom Floyd 'running different routes'

(11:40 am ET) Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd is taking on a new role in the team's up-tempo offense, The Union-Tribune of San Diego reports. In it, the passing is meant to be shorter and more accurate without as many long throws, which is what Floyd was accustomed to previously. 

"I'm running different routes," Floyd said. "These coaches are really working on my lateral ability, a lot of these drills this offseason, getting in and out of my breaks. It's details like foot placement on curl routes, reprogramming my brain. ... I'm 10 years old in this league, but I feel a lot better than last year. I'm very excited about this upcoming year."
