2012 Fantasy outlooks: Indianapolis Colts

Jamey Eisenberg
Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

The last time the Colts took a quarterback at No. 1 overall was 1998 with Peyton Manning, and they hope the addition of Andrew Luck this year will reap similar rewards. Manning took the Colts to two Super Bowls during his tenure, winning one, and had multiple playoff appearances.

As a rookie, Manning passed for 3,739 yards, 26 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. We're expecting Luck to have better stats than that, but don't expect him to be like last year's No. 1 overall pick, Cam Newton, who had 4,051 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and 706 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Newton finished with 396 Fantasy points and was among nine quarterbacks to top 300 points last year. But finding success as a rookie quarterback hasn't been easy, especially for No. 1 overall picks.

There have been nine quarterbacks selected at No. 1 overall since 2001 (Michael Vick, David Carr, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, Alex Smith, JaMarcus Russell, Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford and Newton). Only Newton and Bradford topped 200 Fantasy points as a rookie.

Now, to be fair, Palmer didn't play at all as a rookie, and Vick, Manning, Smith and Russell saw limited playing time. Stafford also didn't finish his rookie season due to an injury. But rookie quarterbacks tend to struggle, especially if you don't have mobility like Newton.

In comparing Luck and Robert Griffin III, we would rather have the Redskins starter in seasonal Fantasy leagues, and Luck should be better in dynasty formats. Griffin should have better Fantasy stats this year with his rushing ability, but Luck projects long-term as the better Fantasy option, maybe as early as 2013.

For this year, he should be a mediocre Fantasy option at best. He has decent weapons in Reggie Wayne, Coby Fleener and Austin Collie, and he should be throwing a lot with the Colts trailing in games. But Luck is not going to post overwhelming stats in his first year and should only be drafted with a late-round pick in seasonal formats.

Sleeper ... Coby Fleener, tight end
Rarely does a rookie quarterback get his No. 1 receiver from college on the same team in their first year, but that's what the Colts have with Luck and Fleener. The Colts took Fleener in the second round of the NFL Draft out of Stanford, and he should shine with Luck much in the same way Dallas Clark did with Manning. Fleener is a tight end with a similar skill set to Clark in that both are standout receivers. In 2011, Fleener averaged 19.6 yards per reception with 10 touchdowns, which followed up an eight-touchdown campaign in 2010. It might be hard for Fleener to become a No. 1 Fantasy option right away, but he's worth a late-round pick in most standard leagues based on potential alone. He should be drafted with a middle- to late-round pick in dynasty/keeper leagues and a first-round pick in rookie-only formats. He might be the best rookie receiver/tight end this year.

Breakout ... Donald Brown, running back
We often wondered how Brown would do if Joseph Addai was out of the picture, and we got a glimpse in 2011 when Addai missed multiple weeks with a hamstring injury. Brown ended up doing a nice job with double digits in Fantasy points in three of his final five games. This year Addai is gone, and Brown should open as the starter while sharing carries with Delone Carter. Brown has the chance for a career year, and we consider him a No. 3 Fantasy running back on Draft Day. He is not someone you want start on a weekly basis, but with a favorable matchup he could be a great fill-in rusher. Carter also should be considered a sleeper since the Colts could be more run-heavy than in years past under new coach Chuck Pagano.

Bust ... Reggie Wayne, wide receiver
Wayne probably should have jumped ship and left the Colts since Manning, Clark, Addai and Pierre Garcon are gone, but he signed a three-year deal to stay in Indianapolis. It's great that he will finish his career with one team, but Wayne is done as a top-flight Fantasy receiver. Not only does he lose Manning and get a rookie in Luck, but he's a step slower at 33 (he'll be 34 in November). Wayne struggled in 2011 with just four touchdowns and only three games with double digits in Fantasy points. Losing Manning for the season didn't help, but Wayne was due to see a decline in production. The change in quarterback likely accelerates that process. Now, he will still have a good week or two during the season, and he's still a quality option in PPR formats (he has at least 75 catches in every year since 2004). But don't expect Wayne to be over 1,200 receiving yards and reach double digits in touchdowns. He's just not that guy anymore, and he should only be drafted as a No. 3 Fantasy receiver with a mid-round pick.

Defensively, the Colts are going to go through growing pains, even with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis still around. So much of their success in 2012 will depend on Luck attacking defenses effectively. He should do well against teams lacking a strong pass rush but that accounts for five opponents. From the Bears in Week 1 to a season-ending set of games against the Texans twice with the Chiefs in Week 16, the Colts' schedule is littered with pass rushers aiming at Luck. That should make it tough for him to thrive in his first season.

Training camp topics

The Colts offense has basically looked the same since 1998 with Manning running the show. It will definitely have a new look this season, and the changes should be fun to watch.

2011 Touches Leaders
Player Touches
Donald Brown 134 carries, 16 catches
Joseph Addai 118 carries, 15 catches
Delone Carter 101 carries, 5 catches
Reggie Wayne 75 catches
Pierre Garcon 70 catches, 4 carries

All eyes will be on Luck and his development, but Fantasy owners should pay attention to how Collie does since he will now start in place of Garcon. Rookie T.Y. Hilton could also make an impact, and the Colts are high on Donnie Avery, who is trying to make a comeback after failed stints with St. Louis and Tennessee.

The other thing to watch will be the split in reps with Brown and Carter and whether or not Carter can turn into a touchdown vulture with his short-yardage ability. Where Fleener lines up should also be interesting since he could see time at receiver.

The Colts are in a rebuilding mode after going 2-14 last year. Things should definitely improve and hopefully Fantasy owners can benefit from some better offensive production this year.

Ryan Williams
Williams played 'scared' in '12
Ryan Williams, RB, ARI
10:08 AM
News: Cardinals running back Ryan Williams told the Arizona Republic that he was more concerned about his knee than his play last season, saying he played scared. Williams came back from a torn patella tendon suffered in 2011 and wasn't ready for the physical punishment that comes with playing running back. Per the story, he got nervous when then-quarterback Kevin Kolb would call '39 toss' because it exposed his right side and his injured knee. The lack of confidence left him "pretty much scared all last year to get the ball in my hands." He added hurting his shoulder was a "blessing" because it allowed him time to get his knee feeling good. Now he says he's not scared anymore. "This is the healthiest I've felt in the past two years," Williams said. "It feels good to be able to run like myself, instinctive and not having to think about what I’m doing, just going out and doing it. I've been working real hard, so things are looking good. My stars are aligned this year."
Analysis: In the story coach Bruce Arians noted that Williams has his mobility back and is someone to watch when the pads come on. Williams has to fight for playing time after the Cardinals drafted Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington and signed Rashard Mendenhall. For now he's no better than a late-round flier but if he looks good in camp and runs with confidence then we could see him getting a decent amount of work.

Michael Crabtree
Harbaugh: Crabtree will play in '13
Michael Crabtree, WR, SF
8:45 AM
News: 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that Michael Crabtree's torn right Achilles will not cost him the entire season. With surgery already done, it is believed Crabtree will return within six months. Linebacker Patrick Willis said Crabtree went down after making a "simple, normal cut" after going in motion and before starting his route during 7 on 7 drills. "Crab is one of those tough guys. He can get hit hard, and he'll bounce right back up," Willis told the San Jose Mercury News. "Yesterday he stayed down a little longer than normal. You say a little prayer and hope it wasn't as bad as it looked. Unfortunately it is."
Analysis: Crabtree was expected to post ridiculous numbers in 2013 after becoming Colin Kaepernick's go-to receiver last year and his promise to dedicate himself to being the Niners' top receiver this year. Eventually he should return and contribute to the Niners but the earliest it seems he could be back is Week 12 at Washington. If you draft Crabtree with what would now be a late-round pick, you'd have to dedicate a bench spot to him for most of the regular season with no guarantee you'd get him in your lineup at 100 percent, if at all. We'd rather spend the same late-round pick on Anquan Boldin or maybe even A.J. Jenkins knowing both will see a lot of work in San Francisco with Crabtree sidelined.

Randy Moss
49ers could go back to Moss
Randy Moss, WR, SF
10:12 AM
News: Comcast Sports Net reports that one possible free agent the 49ers could look at with Michael Crabtree (Achilles) getting hurt is Randy Moss, who caught 28 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns last season in San Francisco. The 49ers seemingly closed the door on Moss early in the offseason after Jim Harbaugh declared he wanted Moss back on the team in 2013. The report says Moss is enjoying spending time with his kids, said a source close to Moss. But if the 49ers wanted to talk to Moss, there's little doubt he would listen.
Analysis: Moss would make sense coming back to the 49ers since he knows the team, played with Colin Kaepernick and would provide a downfield presence. That said, his best days are behind him, and his Fantasy value would be minimal coming into the year. The 49ers will likely do something to help replace Crabtree, and it could be Moss. Keep an eye on what develops, and we'll know Moss' value once he signs somewhere.

Tandon Doss
Doss impressive in OTAs
Tandon Doss, WR, BAL
9:44 AM
News: During Wednesday OTA practice in Baltimore, receiver Tandon Doss split a lot of first-team work with Deonte Thompson and made several nice catches according to the Carroll County Times. Included in that was a touchdown grab in team drills.
Analysis: Doss is considered a good route runner with good size (6-foot-2, 207 pounds). Holding off Thompson, among others, will be key for him to have any chance of seeing playing time this summer. Outside of Torrey Smith it's unlikely any Ravens wideout will get picked in drafts this summer.

Corey Fuller
Stafford calls Fuller 'exciting'
Corey Fuller, WR, DET
9:54 AM
News: It's only one OTA practice but Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has noticed rookie receiver Corey Fuller. "He’s got some speed, you know," Stafford told the official team website. "He went up and made a nice catch (Tuesday) on a high ball. He showed some athleticism there. I haven't worked with him a whole lot, but he’s got size, he’s got speed and pretty good hands. He’s an exciting prospect."
Analysis: Fuller has sleeper potential thanks to his size (6-foot-2) and speed (4.32 in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day). He doesn't have bulk to go with it and is still considered a raw prospect, albeit one with some good potential. He's worth a late pick in dynasty/keeper leagues and a mid-round pick in rookie-only drafts.

Louis Delmas
Delmas working on his own
Louis Delmas, DB, DET
9:52 AM
News: Lions safety Louis Delmas is rehabbing away from the team in an effort to be as healthy as he can for the start of the season. He missed eight games last year because of knee surgery and five games in 2011 because of another knee surgery. "We’re in communication with Lou," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "He’s not here right now going through this stuff, but there’s nothing that he can get out of this because he can’t physically do the stuff that we’re doing right now."
Analysis: Delmas has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career -- he hasn't had over 60 total tackles in each of the last two seasons while missing 13 games. He's a good late-round pick in Fantasy because he can be productive when he's healthy, but there's no guarantee of it.

Lardarius Webb
Webb, McClain doing drills
Lardarius Webb, DB, BAL
9:39 AM
News: The Carroll County Times reports Ravens cornerback Lardarius Webb and linebacker Jameel McClain are "on schedule" with their injuries according to coach John Harbaugh. Both worked in individual drills for most of practice on Wednesday. "Very encouraged with Lardarius and Jameel, really throughout [their whole recovery process]" Harbaugh said. "They have both done a great job with their rehab [and] they have had no setbacks."
Analysis: Webb will be leaned upon as a capable Fantasy DB this season after he posted awesome numbers in 2011. We'll see how he looks in training camp but he should end up getting picked late. The same can't be said for McClain, who probably won't start unless things break the right way for him in camp.

Tori Gurley
Browns make roster move
Tori Gurley, WR, BAL
9:28 AM
News: The Browns signed ex-Packers receiver Tori Gurley and waived quarterback Thaddeus Lewis.
Analysis: Neither player carries enough Fantasy value to warrant use.

Marshawn Lynch
Latest on Lynch's DUI case
Marshawn Lynch, RB, SEA
9:24 AM
News: There's still no trial date for Marshawn Lynch's arrest for DUI last July according to the Alameda Court District Attorney's office. A motion was filed to suppress evidence in the case; a July 5 date has been set to settle that in advance of a trial. Lynch entered a not guilty plea last August. He was not in attendance for the start of OTA workouts in Seattle this week.
Analysis: A guilty plea followed by a suspension from the NFL might be the only way to slow down Lynch at this point. He worked out with the team earlier this offseason and looked great. While the Seahawks added Percy Harvin and drafted Christine Michael, both speedsters who can snag carries from Lynch (as will Robert Turbin), he's still believed to be in line for close to 275 touches and work at the goal-line. That's the kind of running back you want with a first-round pick. Lynch will get taken between third and seventh overall in every draft this summer.

Kendall Hunter
Two Niners on the mend
Kendall Hunter, RB, SF
9:14 AM
News: Kendall Hunter (Achilles) and Kyle Williams (ACL) were both present for the stretch and individual drill portions of 49ers OTA workouts on Wednesday according to the San Jose Mercury News. However once team drills started both players went to side fields for conditioning work with trainers. "I’m not going to comment on the timetable. But, they’re progressing really well," coach Jim Harbaugh said of both players as they continue to rehab from their injuries.
Analysis: Hunter might end up being the best handcuff option for veteran Frank Gore since it figures he'd see a lot of work ahead of LaMichael James if Gore were to miss significant playing time. That's assuming he's healthy. Williams will compete for playing time in training camp this summer in the wake of Michael Crabtree's torn Achilles sidelining him for most of the season. That's assuming he's healthy. While Hunter could be a late-round pick we suspect Williams won't get drafted at all this summer.
