2012 Draft Prep: 14-team mock draft

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

Every draft presents different challenges, but adding more owners to the mix can make Draft Day a nightmare. In a 14-team league you can get into Round 3 or 4 and find the quality of running backs looking thin based on the talent pool, especially with the lack of depth at that position this year.

That happened to one owner in this 14-team draft, Will Brinson, a Senior NFL Blogger at CBSSports.com. Brinson started his draft with Drew Brees in Round 1 at No. 10 overall, Larry Fitzgerald in Round 2 at No. 19 and A.J. Green in Round 3 at No. 38. Instead of reaching for a running back in Round 4 that he didn't like -- the players available to him were BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Roy Helu, Reggie Bush and Isaac Redman -- Brinson continued to stockpile talent at other positions.

He drafted Victor Cruz in Round 4 at No. 47, Jason Witten in Round 5 at No. 66 and Peyton Manning in Round 6 at No. 75. Brinson admitted that the Manning pick was a "planning to trade" strategy since he already had Brees, and he was looking at the best player available. Brinson said in the draft room "at this point in the draft, I'd rather gamble on Peyton and hope he looks great in training camp."

He finally took his first running back in Round 7 with Ben Tate at No. 94, and then he started loading up at the position with Ronnie Hillman in Round 8 (No. 103), Shane Vereen in Round 9 (No. 122), Jacquizz Rodgers in Round 10 (No. 131) and Isaiah Pead in Round 11 (No. 150). He could be in great shape if injuries happen to Arian Foster, Willis McGahee, Michael Turner or Steven Jackson, but running back is clearly his biggest weakness.

Brinson is loaded at the other spots with a Top 3 quarterback in Brees, three stud receivers in Fitzgerald, Green and Cruz and a standout tight end in Witten, but he will need some breaks for his running back corps to be successful. Still, his team should be competitive in a 14-team league.

But this draft should be an example of not letting one position get away from you in a deeper league. You can still compete with elite level talent at other spots, but you'd rather have a balanced squad like some of the other teams below.

As always, we ask you to share your thoughts on this draft. Take advantage of our Fantasy Football Twitter feed (@CBSFantasyFB) and post your comments there, or share your thoughts on our Fantasy Football Facebook page.

In this league, all touchdowns are worth six points, and we award one point for every 10 yards rushing and receiving and one point for every 25 yards passing. We feature a starting lineup of QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, K, DST and a FLEX (RB/WR/TE). There will also be five reserve spots for a 14-round draft. This lineup reflects our CBSSports.com free Fantasy Football game.

We also had two special guests join us for this draft as Dylan Demming and Kurt Panchura -- two randomly selected readers -- were chosen on Twitter to mock with us. This is something we plan to do going forward, so be on the lookout for your chance to draft with us.

Our draft order is as follows ...

Coaches praise Packers WR Randall Cobb for mindset
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:39 am ET) The work ethic and determination of Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb not only allowed him to bounce back Sunday from a poor performance in Week 3 against Detroit, but it earned him the praise of Mike McCarthy.

"Randall's a tireless worker. He's a true pro," McCarthy told the team website. "He was that way at a young age. His rookie year, he was clearly one of the most impressive rookies from a maturity standpoint that we've had come through the doors. He's the same guy every day. ... The performance of prior games, it might give you more motivation. I've never seen him need more urgency in his approach. He's a very consistent professional."

Cobb achieved season-highs with seven catches and 113 yards in the defeat of the Bears on Sunday and added two touchdowns to give him five on the season. Receivers coach Edgar Bennett was duly impressed, but not particularly surprised.

"He's one of the toughest - I say receiver - but football players I've been around," Bennett said. "Not only from a physical standpoint, but that's mentality as well. He's tough minded. He understands what goes into it, and what it's going to take to go from good to great. That's always the standard. 'Good is not good enough.' ... I think that's the mindset, certainly, that he has."

Start Kelvin Benjamin already
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11:37 am ET) Four games in, Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin is still sitting in more than one-fifth of all Fantasy leagues, which would suggest in a most literal sense that he's less than must-start.

I don't know what these people are waiting to see. The rookie's freakish size makes him a legitimate No. 1 target for quarterback Cam Newton, and he's lived up to the billing so far with a touchdown in three of his first four games, going for more than 75 yards in the same three. His one clunker was Week 2 against Detroit, which has proven to be one of the better teams against the pass season, and even then, he had eight targets. He's had at least eight in every game, his 36 tying for eighth among wide receivers.

So the Panthers are throwing him the ball, and he's going up and getting it. I don't see how that changes Week 5 against the Bears, who now rank 20th against the pass after getting shredded by Aaron Rodgers last week.

Come on. Benjamin is a must-start. Stop playing around.

(But keep playing!)

Knowshon Moreno about four weeks away from return
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:33 am ET) Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno, who dislocated his elbow in Week 2, said he's about four weeks away from returning, reports the Palm Beach Post.

Coach, Eagles WR Josh Huff disagree about injured shoulder
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:20 am ET) A bit of discrepancy in regard to the health of Eagles wide receiver Josh Huff between he and Chip Kelly appears to have arisen.

Huff, who injured his shoulder in Week 2 of the preseason, told ESPN.com he has been healthy for a week-and-a-half and is eager to make his NFL debut. Kelly, however, reported Wednesday that Huff aggravated his shoulder injury last week in practice and is not ready physically or mentally to return, per the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The rookie has been inactive throughout the year and was listed as questionable heading into the game last Sunday at San Francisco.

Don't get too attached to Darrin Reaves
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(11:19 am ET) Though the Panthers earlier this week declared Darrin Reaves their starting running back by default, they continue to hold out hope that Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy Whittaker, who each missed Week 4 because of injuries, can return Week 5 against the Bears.

Most likely, Fantasy owners aren't especially invested in Reaves anyway. He didn't look good in his first action Week 4 at Baltimore, rushing 12 times for 26 yards. Granted, it was a tough matchup, and he could fare better against the Bears' 22nd-ranked run defense this week, but if either Stewart or Whittaker is active, Reaves won't get a full workload even if he technically does start. Besides, the Panthers haven't produced an especially useful Fantasy running back in years.

It goes without saying you should only start Reaves if you're desperate.

(11:19 am ET) Browns tight end Jordan Cameron is expected to be in much better shape in Week 5 against the Titans, after a shoulder injury limited him to just one catch in Week 3. Will the bye week help get him going?

One thing working in Cameron's favor is a Titans defense that has struggled to keep up with tight ends this season. The Colts' tight ends scored twice last week, and the Titians have allowed three touchdowns total to that position, leading to the 8.5 Fantasy points per game allowed, the 11th-most in the league.

So far, Cameron has been a major disappointment this season, though hopefully the shoulder injury explains a way most of that. You probably won't feel great about it, given his play so far, but Cameron is a worthy starting Fantasy option for Week 5.

Andrew Hawkins looking for first score
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11:16 am ET) Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins has been a consistently productive option in the team's passing game so far this season, and will look to keep that going in Week 5 against the Titans.

Hawkins has acquitted himself well so far while serving as the team's No. 1 receiver, with 21 catches for 244 yards through three games. The biggest issue for him has been a lack of red zone productivity, a trend he might have some trouble reversing against the Titans.

Tennessee's defense has allowed just two touchdowns to opposing wide receivers this season, though both came from the No. 1 options in Dallas and Indianapolis in Weeks 2 and 4, respectively. Hawkins will need to make more big plays before Fantasy owners want to trust him, so consider him a risky start for Week 5 until he shows a nose for the end zone.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin back in action Wednesday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:06 am ET) Chip Kelly has announced that Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who was sidelined from practice Tuesday with no explanation, is back on the field Wednesday.

Maclin has been on a roll all season with 20 catches for 353 yards and three touchdowns in just four games. He's on pace for career-highs of 1,412 yards and 12 scores.

Bishop Sankey to get more playing time
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(11:01 am ET) Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said rookie running back Bishop Sankey will get more playing time, starting Sunday against the Browns, reports The Tennessean. Sankey was on the field for 29 snaps Week 4, compared to 22 in Week 3.

In those two games he ran for 95 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 32 yards.

"You will see [more reps for Sankey]," Whisenhunt told the paper. "That's coming. And I think you'll see more of that earlier in the game this week.

"I think one of the things that does get lost is that he had more snaps in the game last week than any of our running backs. That game got a little one-sided quickly, so maybe it wasn't as evident, but he was in there earlier."

Eagles FS Malcolm Jenkins earns kudos from coach
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:01 am ET) Eagles free safety Malcolm Jenkins, whose thievery has resulted in one interception in each of the last three games, has earned the praise of Chip Kelly.

"We've said since day one, (he) can play anywhere," Kelly told Eagles Insider. "He's been unbelievable since he arrived here."

Jenkins has shown off his range this season. Each of his picks have been snagged on a different part of the field. The veteran has more interceptions in four games this year than he has in any of his five previous full seasons.
