Offseason Extra: 12-team, PPR mock draft

Senior Fantasy Writer
  •

We recently held a point per reception mock draft and it was interesting to see the different strategies used in this format compared to a standard one. One owner used what this year will be a unique approach no matter the format and might have come away with the best team.

Peter Madden, drafting at No. 9, went with two receivers with his first two picks. He came away with Calvin Johnson in Round 1 -- he might have slipped a little in this draft -- and Brandon Marshall in Round 2. Those were the top two receivers in any format last year and the top two non-quarterbacks in PPR leagues. Based on that fact alone you should be excited about this team.

Check out our Fantasy Football podcast!

His top two running backs are questionable because of injury in DeMarco Murray and Darren McFadden, but you'll take that risk if you start your PPR team with Johnson and Marshall. He added Chris Ivory, Shane Vereen and Bryce Brown as insurance and still managed to land Cecil Shorts as his third receiver. Kyle Rudolph is his tight end and Andrew Luck is his quarterback.

The reason you won't see many owners take two receivers with their first two picks is because getting standout running backs early is a priority and receiver is deep. You should target running backs early in all leagues, but keep in mind that in 2012 eight of the top 12 non quarterbacks were receivers.

If you decide to take receivers with your first two picks you'll have to get lucky (and definitely creative) with your running backs. The upside here with Murray, McFadden, Ivory, Vereen and Brown (as well as the handcuffs in Oakland and Dallas) make it worthwhile. It also helps if a good quarterback and/or tight end land in your lap like Luck and Rudolph.

We know in our mock drafts quarterbacks tend to fall likely more than in your leagues, but you should plan to wait for a quarterback in PPR formats. Load up on running backs and receivers and wait for someone like Colin Kaepernick, Russell Wilson, Luck or Robert Griffin III, who all went in Round 7 or later here.

For my team, I went with Doug Martin at No. 4 overall and Demaryius Thomas in Round 2. Rob Gronkowski, even with his injury concerns, was impossible to pass on in Round 3. I gambled on two rookies as starters in Montee Ball and Tavon Austin, but they should be standout options right away. And I was able to get Tom Brady in Round 5.

At flex, I would start T.Y. Hilton to open the season. Six other owners (J. Darin Darst, Jeff Tobin, Mike Freeman, Nando Di Fino, Scott White and Will Brinson) drafted with the idea of using a receiver or tight end at flex, too. That's another difference in PPR leagues -- you don't have to rely on a running back at the flex position, and a receiver might be more useful in that spot.

As always, we ask you to share your thoughts on this draft. Take advantage of our Fantasy Football Twitter feed (@CBSFantasyFB) and post your comments there, or share your thoughts on our Fantasy Football Facebook page.

In this league, all touchdowns are worth six points and we award one point for every 10 yards rushing and receiving and one point for every 25 yards passing. We also give one point for every reception. We feature a starting lineup of QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, K, DST and a FLEX (RB/WR/TE). There will also be six reserve spots for a 15-round draft.

Backup quarterback not enough to sink Dez Bryant's value
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6:13 pm ET) With Tony Romo's status for Week 9 up in the air, Fantasy owners might be a bit concerned about Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant's value for this Sunday's game against the Cardinals. But even with a tough matchup on the way and the possibility of Bryant catching passes from Brandon Weeden, Fantasy owners should keep Bryant in their lineups.

Weeden has become something of a punchline after a two fairly disastrous seasons to open his career, but he was still competent enough not to torpedo Josh Gordon's breakout campaign last season. In three games Weeden started, Gordon had 19 receptions for 408 yards and two touchdowns, including Gordon's massive 10-catch, 261-yard game. Even if Weeden takes the field, Bryant could still be in line to get his.

There is some risk that Weeden will be a disaster, but Bryant is too good to worry too much about who is throwing him the ball. Although Romo playing would be best for Bryant's Fantasy value, you can't risk benching someone this explosive on the chance his quarterback doesn't play.

Bobby Rainey could star in Week 9
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6:03 pm ET) With Doug Martin expected to sit out with an ankle injury and Charles Sims' debut possibly another week away, Buccaneers running back Bobby Rainey could be in line for a big workload in Week 9 against the Browns this Sunday.

Rainey has been the team's best back this season, even if he hasn't been able to earn the role that would come with that. He should get the chance Sunday, and has a good matchup to show off against a Browns defense that ranks among the 10-worst in the league against running backs, allowing 20.4 Fantasy points per game.

The Browns held the Raiders' backs in check last week, limiting them to just 10 Fantasy points, but that came a week after they surrendered 28 to what had previously been a hapless Jaguars ground game. Rainey doesn't have much of a track record, but he still makes for a solid starting option this week, though more as a No. 2 back.

Key questionables highlight 49ers injury report for Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:44 pm ET) Standout linebacker Patrick Willis (toe) is a game-time decision for the 49ers against St. Louis on Sunday. He is listed as questionable along with cornerback Tramaine Brock, who is also dealing with a toe issue.

The probables are cornerback Chris Culliver (hamstring) and safety Jimmie Ward (quad).

Ronnie Hillman headlines Broncos probables Week 9
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:41 pm ET) Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman should play Week 9 against the Patriots.

Hillman is listed as probable on the injury report due to a shoulder injury. He was a full participant in practice Friday, and is expected to play.

The team also listed Lamin Barrow, Omar Bolden, Chris Harris Jr., Brandon McManus, Juwan Thompson, Louis Vasquez and Webster Kayvon as probable for the contest.

Broncos rule three as questionable for Week 9
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:38 pm ET) The Broncos have ruled Quinton Carter, Virgil Green and Steve Johnson as questionable Week 9 against the Patriots.

Carter is dealing with a hamstring injury, but was unable to practice Friday. Both Green and Johnson were limited in practice Friday. Green has a calf injury. Johnson is dealing with an ankle issue.

Broncos rule out Montee Ball again
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:35 pm ET) Broncos running back Montee Ball has been ruled out Week 9 against the Patriots.

Ball is still dealing with a groin issue. He's already missed the past three games due to the injury.

Patriots' Brandon Browner good to go Week 9
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:32 pm ET) Patriots corner Brandon Browner is probable Week 9 against the Broncos.

Browner is listed with an ankle injury. He was able to get through full practice Friday, and should be able to play Sunday.

Patriots list Tom Brady as probable again
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:28 pm ET) Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is probable for Week 9 due to an ankle injury.

Brady will play, as usual. While the ankle injury seemed slightly more serious a few weeks ago, it doesn't seem to be an issue now. He's not missing a game against Peyton Manning.

Cardinals list mostly probables on Friday injury report
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5:28 pm ET) Running back Stepfan Taylor (calf), who has been ruled out as expected by the Cardinals for their Sunday game in Dallas, is the lone no-go. Safety Tony Jefferson (knee) and tight end Troy Niklas (ankle) are questionable.

The rest on their Friday injury list are probable, including standout cornerback Patrick Peterson (concussion). They are defensive end Calais Campbell (knee), linebacker Kenny Demens (knee), running back Andre Ellington (foot), wideout Michael Floyd (knee) and safety Rashad Johnson (knee).

Patriots list four as questionable Week 9
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(5:26 pm ET) The Patriots have listed four players as questionable heading into Week 9.

Dominique Easley, Nate Ebner, Cameron Fleming and Matthew Slater will all be game-time decisions against Denver. Both Ebner and Fleming are dealing with finger injuries. Easley has a knee issue, while Slater is dealing with a shoulder injury.
