Lions CB Cassius Vaughn seeking role for Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:34 am ET) Lions nickel cornerback Cassius Vaughn is hoping to return to action Sunday against Buffalo after missing two games with an ankle injury. But he realizes his hopes might conflict with reality.

Vaughn has made progress since suffering the injury on Sept. 17. But he might be deemed unready to play and might also no longer have a defined role, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"I'm trying to sweet talk them and see (if I can play this week)," Vaughn said. "I know the coaching staff believes in me and I know we're trying to get back, but when we're on a run like this and you're seeing the team doing so well, you just want to be a part of it."

Vaughn assumed the nickel role early in Week 2 after rookie Nevin Lawson sustained a season-ending injury. Vaughn was slated for slot duty against Green Bay the next week, but sprained his ankle in practice and has been sidelined since.

Diagnosis on Cardinals QB Carson Palmer reveals numbness
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(11:21 am ET) A visit to an orthopedic surgeon has revealed that Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is suffering from numbness over part of his outer shoulder, as well as weakness when he lifts his arm up and away from the body, according to Fox Sports.

That is considered good news since it will allow him to avoid surgery and continue rehabbing with the team. The injury, which he sustained in Week 1, occurred on a running play during which he took a hit on the shoulder.

Bruce Arians has indicated that Palmer would be doubtful for Thursday practice but could still serve as the backup when the Cardinals play at Denver on Sunday. Much will depend on his condition before that.

Giants WR Odell Beckham to be thrown right into the fire
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:48 am ET) Giants rookie wideout Odell Beckham will not dip his toes in the water when it comes to his first NFL action, which will likely be Sunday against Atlanta. He is expected to get tossed right in, according to NJ.com.

Beckham, who has been sidelined all year with a hamstring injury, must be familiar with the entire offensive scheme, but Tom Coughlin claims he's ready.

"He's been in every meeting," Coughlin said. "I would expect him to know everything. I wouldn't shy away from [him playing a significant role]. He's demonstrated an ability to handle whatever's thrown at him. He's done that throughout, so I would expect that. Now, under fire with adjustments and signals and things of that nature, we've got to see where we are with regard to that, too."

Beckham returned to practice last week, but has not participated fully in a workout since mid-June. He has had 1-on-1 meetings recently with quarterback Eli Manning.

Lions RB George Winn could be destined for action Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:35 am ET) Just-promoted Lions running back George Winn could find himself carrying the ball a lot sooner than anticipated. He is likely to get a shot as early as Sunday against Buffalo.

Winn, who was one of the surprises of the preseason, might be needed with Joique Bell (concussion) and Theo Riddick (hamstring) potentially out.

"I think it's certainly a possibility," Jim Caldwell told MLive.com. "I think he's a guy that's up for the task as well. He worked extremely hard, obviously, during the preseason, was able to come in and do some good things. We think he's progressed since then."

Winn has been on the rosters of four different NFL teams since the beginning of last season but has yet to play a down.

Colts QB Andrew Luck 'not getting greedy' in passing game
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10:27 am ET) The Colts have nine players with at least six receptions through the first four games. Colts coach Chuck Pagano feels quarterback Andrew Luck's ability to spread the football around has led Luck to opening the season with 13 passing touchdowns, including back-to-back four-touchdown performances.

"He's doing a great job of taking what the defense is giving him and not getting greedy, so to speak, and spreading the ball around," Pagano said, per ESPN. "They've got to make a decision defensively who they want to identify like we do as game-wreckers and take those guys away, but it's going to open it up obviously for somebody else either in the run game or the pass game."

Report: Vikings leaning toward sitting QB Teddy Bridgewater
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10:15 am ET) Signs are pointing to Vikings rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater not playing Thursday night at Green Bay, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Bridgewater, who performed well in his NFL debut the past two games, has been dealing with a sprained ankle. Mike Zimmer has hinted that the team does not want to risk worsening the injury by playing Bridgewater after a short work week.

Report: C.J. Spillman being investigated for sexual assault
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2014) Police are investigating Cowboys player C.J. Spillman for an alleged sexual assault, according to the New York Daily News.

Police confirmed that Spillman was "involved" in the investigation. The incident took place Saturday, September 20. Spillman played in the team's game against the Rams the following day. A police spokesman said they are "looking into the matter."

Report: Aaron Dobson inactive after 'mouthing off'
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2014) Patriots wide receiver Aaron Dobson has been inactive the past two weeks after he "mouthed off" to Josh McDaniels, according to the Boston Globe.

Dobson was thought to be one of the team's main receivers coming into the season, but has found himself inactive the last two weeks. If the report is true, it could explain why the Patriots have been willing to keep one of their more talented wideouts on the bench.

Report: Justin Blackmon enters treatment facility
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2014) Jaguars suspended wide receiver Justin Blackmon has voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility, according to ESPN.

Coach Gus Bradley said Blackmon was "doing very well," according to the report. Bradley cannot speak to Blackmon due to the suspension, and has been getting updates from his agent. Blackmon was suspended for at least a year after repeated violating the substance abuse policy. Though he's currently unable to play, Blackmon is still a member of Jacksonville's organization.

Jamaal Charles limited Wednesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2014) Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was limited in practice Wednesday.

Charles is dealing with an ankle injury, but was able to play Week 4. As long as he continues practicing he should be good to go Week 5. Charles scored three touchdowns Week 4 despite the injury.
