Nate Burleson: I might retire after 2014 season

(3:59 pm ET) Browns wideout Nate Burleson is contemplating retirement after this season, per the Akron Beacon Journal. He has been sidelined recently with a hamstring injury.

Burleson added that he would like to do something special with his new team, which has struggled to find any playmakers in the receiving corps in the presason and is all but certain to lose top wideout Josh Gordon for as much as the entire year to a drug suspension.


Eric Weems back with Atlanta; Jabin Sambrano waived

(3:52 pm ET) The Falcons have signed Eric Weems and waived fellow wide receiver Jabin Sambrano.

Weems was released by Chicago on Saturday. He played for five years with Atlanta and has 27 career receptions.


Michael Floyd practiced on limited basis Wednesday

(3:46 pm ET) As expected, Cardinals wide receiver Michael Floyd returned to practice Wednesday, though his participation was limited.

Floyd has been dealing with a groin injury. It remains to be seen if he plays Saturday against Cincinnati.


Jamaal Charles back at practice Thursday

(3:36 pm ET) Chiefs prolific running back Jamaal Charles returned to practice Thursday after missing the Wednesday session with a bruised foot.

Previous reports have indicated the Charles is not expected to play Saturday against Minnesota. It's unknown whether his participation Thursday changes that expectation.


Michael Brooks undergoes knee surgery Thursday

(3:26 pm ET) The Seahawks have revealed that defensive tackle Michael Brooks is undergoing knee surgery Thursday.

Brooks, who was waived and resigned by the team in the offseason, played in one game for Seattle in 2013 and registered one tackle.


Illness sidelines Vontaze Burfict for second straight day

(3:18 pm ET) A stomach ailment that prevented Bengals outside linebacker Vontaze Burfict from practicing Wednesday did the same Thursday. It remains to be seen if he recovers in time to play Sunday night in Arizona.

Burfict does have time to get healthy - the Bengals play the last preseason game of Week 3.


Saints dump quartet of players

Report: Trade indicates Eric Berry might be out for a while

(2:58 pm ET) The trade that brought safety Kelcie McCray from Tampa Bay could indicate that the heel injury of Chiefs safety Eric Berry could be more severe than has been reported, ESPN has speculated.

Berry has not practiced all week and did not play in the Sunday preseason game against Carolina. Andy Reid, however, has downplayed the severity of the injury.


Tony Romo claims he's ready for regular season

(2:50 pm ET) Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo believes he's ready to roll into the regular season. He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that there is nothing he must test or do in his preseason fnale Saturday in Miami that will make a difference.

The Cowboys open their season on Sept. 7 against San Francisco.

"More than anything, you just want to execute as an offense and go out and do well," Romo said in regard to the exhibition clash. "We gauge a lot sometimes off of two drives. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's a little silly because games you're going to have 10-to-11 [drives]."

Romo added that he has felt no physical limitations after undergoing offseason back surgery.


Jimmy Smith a no-go for Saturday game against Redskins

(2:38 pm ET) Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith, who had been deemed ready to play Saturday against Washington, has now been declared out.

Smith has been nursing a sore chest, but John Harbaugh had considered him a likely participant in the game with a little rest.
