Tony Romo claims he's ready for regular season

(2:50 pm ET) Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo believes he's ready to roll into the regular season. He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that there is nothing he must test or do in his preseason fnale Saturday in Miami that will make a difference.

The Cowboys open their season on Sept. 7 against San Francisco.

"More than anything, you just want to execute as an offense and go out and do well," Romo said in regard to the exhibition clash. "We gauge a lot sometimes off of two drives. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's a little silly because games you're going to have 10-to-11 [drives]."

Romo added that he has felt no physical limitations after undergoing offseason back surgery.


Jimmy Smith a no-go for Saturday game against Redskins

(2:38 pm ET) Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith, who had been deemed ready to play Saturday against Washington, has now been declared out.

Smith has been nursing a sore chest, but John Harbaugh had considered him a likely participant in the game with a little rest.


Chiefs trade guard to Buccaneers for safety

(2:27 pm ET) The Chiefs have swapped guard Rishaw Johnson to the Buccaneers for safety Kelcie McCray.

The latter played in 15 games combined for Miami and Tampa Bay in 2013. He managed eight tackles and four assists a year ago. Johnson started one of the three games in which he participated for Kansas City in 2013.


Nate Burleson day-to-day with hamstring injury

(2:22 pm ET) A hamstring issue has Browns veteran wideout Nate Burleson in a day-to-day situation, per the Akron Beacon Journal.

The team could use a healthy Burleson, who could add production to a wide receiving corps that has struggled mightily in the preseason.


Coach: Jadeveon Clowney fine, but might not play Saturday

(2:17 pm ET) A neck ailment that forced top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney out of Wednesday practice for the Texans could keep him sidelined Saturday at Denver. But Bill O'Brien did say Thursday that Clowney is doing fine.

Death of daughter has Montori Hughes away from camp

(2:07 pm ET) Defensive lineman Montori Hughes has been sidelined from Colts practice for a week due to the recent passing of his young daughter, NFL.com has reported.

Hughes played in four games last season as a rookie.


Report: Steelers set to play backs despite legal issues

(2:01 pm ET) The Steelers are set to play running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount on Thursday night against Philadelphia, sources have told ESPN.

The two were charged with marijuana possession Wednesday while the former was also charged with DUI.

Sammy Watkins not cleared for game action

(1:47 pm ET) Doug Marrone said if the Bills were playing their third preseason game Thursday, rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins would not be active, per ESPN. Watkins is dealing with a rib injury and has not been cleared by team doctors for game action.

The Bills are off Friday and are set to play Saturday against Tampa Bay. Watkins participated in some drills Thursday after sitting out the Tuesday and Wednesday sessions, but did not take part in team drills.


Coach not sure if Stephen Bowen will be ready for season

(1:00 pm ET) Jay Gruden has expressed uncertainty over the possibility of Redskins defensive end Stephen Bowen being available to start the regular season, per the Washington Post.

Bowen landed on the PUP list before training camp after undergoing knee surgery late last season. He contributed 19 tackles in 10 starts.
