Report: Josh Gordon's appeal stronger than previously thought
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:51 pm ET) Browns receiver Josh Brown has a fairly strong case for appealing his one-year suspension for a failed marijuana test, according to Pro Football Talk. The case, to be heard Friday, "holds more water than the average bong," the report said.

PFT says urine samples are split into "A" and "B" bottles. Gordon's "A" bottle showed a concentration one nanogram per milliliter above the limit, while the "B" sample showed a concentration slightly below the limit, per PFT.

But the league's substance abuse policy says the "B" bottle test "need only show that the substance, revealed in the ‘A’ bottle Test, is evident to the ‘limits of detection’ to confirm the results of the ‘A’ bottle Test."

PFT says Gordon, who's in Stage III of the program due to previous failed tests, has passed at least 70 drug tests. And he would have passed this one "but for the 50-50 luck of the draw," the website said.

Golden Tate knocks off the rust
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:15 pm ET) Lions receiver Golden Tate (shoulder) came off the PUP list Monday in time to participate in the team's first practice.

"Still a little rusty out there, still have to trust myself and trust my hands," he told the Detroit Free Press. "But I like the way we work around here, coach (Jim Caldwell) does a great job at taking care of our legs. After Day 1, I’m excited about [Tuesday] and I’m just going to keep on getting better day to day."

Tate said a shoulder injury was a first for him. “I kind of trusted the doctors," he said. "The doctors said I would be back by camp and here I am practicing Day 1. However, there was a lot of rehabbing and strengthening the muscles around it so it didn’t shut down, but I feel like I’m close to being pretty good."

Caldwell called Tate "a very important piece to our offense."

RB Damien Williams displaying 'second gear'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:09 pm ET) Dolphins running back Damien Williams, an undrafted free agent who starred at Oklahoma before getting dismissed from the program, is opening eyes at training camp. Coach Joe Philbin said Williams has good hands and "a little bit of a second gear."

"I think he’s got that explosiveness," Philbin continued. "He shuffled one or two times today on a draw, I know we corrected him one time where he kind of danced in the hole a little bit, but typically he’s been decisive. When he really makes up his mind, you kind of see him moving away from people. I think he catches the ball well, I like what he’s done so far."

Williams (5-11, 222 pounds) ran for 946 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2012 with Oklahoma. He dealt with an ankle injury last year before getting dismissed in November.

Joe Looney taking advantage of Alex Boone's holdout
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:56 pm ET) 49ers guard Joe Looney is working with the first team while Alex Boone holds out for a better contract. According to CSNBayArea.com, Looney's performance could affect how the team handles Boone's holdout.

"I’m approaching training camp as a time to compete and get better, and I want to show the coaches I’m getting better every day," Looney said. "Alex Boone is a hell of a player and a hell of a guy, and him being gone is his business. But watching him on film every day, I want to come in and do a hell of a job like he does."

Coach Jim Harbaugh praised Looney's performance so far.
