Andre Williams shining early

(5:58 pm ET) Giants rookie running back Andre Williams impressed coaches at Wednesday's practice and continued to be used in goal-line packages, reports the team's website. Williams "is a rookie, he’s got a lot of burst, a lot of energy and he’s very fresh, so I was excited about what he did," running backs coach Craig Johnson said.

Williams is trying to carve out a niche in a backfield that includes Rashad Jennings, David Wilson and Peyton Hillis.


Panthers tweak roster

Jameel McClain returns to full practice

(5:45 pm ET) Giants linebacker Jameel McClain, who left Tuesday's practice with a foot problem, was a full participant Wednesday. "He did well," coach Tom Coughlin said. "He came out and practiced and went the whole practice, so I think he’s fine. A little sore, but he was able to go."

McClain is vying to start at middle linebacker while Jon Beason (foot) is out.


Lions place Ziggy Ansah on PUP list

Report: Terrance West goes on injury list

NaVorro Bowman starts on PUP list as expected

(5:08 pm ET) The Vikings waived defensive end Spencer Nealy, who was recently suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. To fill his spot, Minnesota signed former Saints tight end Mike Higgins.

Jamaal Charles more than doubles his salary

(5:04 pm ET) Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles received a two-year contract extension that includes $18.1 million in new money, reports NFL Network. Instead of making $3.9 million in 2014, Charles will earn $8.3 million.

Charles' new contract, which runs through 2017, makes him the NFL's second-highest paid back behind Adrian Peterson.


Justin Smith ready to go after shoulder surgery

(5:00 pm ET) 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith had offseason shoulder surgery to repair damage he sustained in camp a year ago, reports CSNBayArea.com. Smith, 34, spent the offseason rehabbing and missed all the on-field drills.

But Smith, who did not miss a game last year, says he's ready to go. "I feel healthy compared to last year," Smith said. "I feel a lot better than I did last year. This is it. This is the one I’m thinking about."
