Defensive back Dwight Lowery, who is beginning his first year with the Falcons after spending the last three with the Jaguars, was among the team's top tacklers Week 1 against the Saints. He finished with 11, including seven solo.

Lowery has never had more than 64 tackles in a season, and those came as a rookie in 2008.

Falcons defensive end Osi Umenyiora conceded Wednesday that he needs to contribute more to what has been a failing defense in 2014. Atlanta is yielded 28.3 points per game this season and surrendered 41 Sunday at Minnesota.

"Do I feel like I could be helping more? Yes," he told the New York Daily News. He added that he will continue to do whatever the team asks of him.

Umenyiora has yet to start in four games and has registered just six tackles and no sacks.

Falcons coach Mike Smith told reporters safety William Moore will return to full contact practice this week, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Moore, who is on IR with a shoulder injury, is eligible to return Week 12 against Arizona.

"We will see how he makes it through the week," Smith said. "He will be eligible to return to game activity. If everything goes well, we sure will welcome him back with open arms because he's a very good player for us."

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was held out of practice for a second straight day Thursday due to an ankle injury, according to ESPN. The Falcons host the Cardinals in Week 13.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said he anticipates White practicing Friday and playing Sunday.

White has been on a productive run over the last five games, totaling 37 catches for 409 yards and three touchdowns. The Cardinals are yielding 254.6 passing yards per game and have allowed 15 passing touchdowns in 11 games.

With the team up by a ton, Atlanta started using their subs in the third quarter. Jacquizz Rodgers received five carries for 6 yards. Rodgers also caught a pass for 3 yards.

Eric Weems seemed to be the biggest beneficiary, hauling in four passes for 69 yards. Fullback Patrick DiMarco gained 35 yards on three catches. Levine Toilolo also contributed, catching two passes for 25 yards. Courtney Roby picked up 11 yards on one reception. 

They'll take on the Vikings Week 4.

The Falcons could line up cornerback Desmond Trufant one-on-one Sunday against Browns prolific wideout Josh Gordon, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Gordon is set to make his 2014 debut after serving a 10-game suspension.

Trufant has taken on the task lately of trying to shut down No. 1 receivers. He matched up against Carolina's Kelvin Benjamin last week.

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan understands the need to focus on Gordon. "He's a very explosive player," Nolan said. "He's one of the top receivers in the league without question. Big. Strong. Fast. He's a very commanding player at the position."

Pro Football Focus ranks Trufant as the fourth-best cornerback in the NFL this season.

The Falcons' inactives for Week 1 at New Orleans include defensive back Asante Samuel, running back Josh Vaughan, defensive back Kemal Ishmael, offensive lineman Jeremy Trueblood, offensive lineman Harland Gunn, defensive lineman Travian Robertson and defensive lineman Stansly Maponga. None of the seven were listed on Friday's injury report.

Falcons rookie defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman suffered only a bone bruise in his wrist when he got into a scuffle with center Joe Crawley, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Earlier reports suggested Hageman had a hairline fracture.

Coach Mike Smith said Hageman will practice Monday.

Falcons tight end Bear Pascoe scored his second career touchdown and his first of the season Sunday against the Lions in London. Pascoe caught a 1-yard pass in the back of the end zone from Matt Ryan in the first quarter. It was his only touch of the afternoon in a 22-21 Week 8 defeat.

Falcons coach Mike Smith told 92.9 The Game in Atlanta that pass rusher Kroy Biermann will practice but have limited snaps. He'll also take a day off of practice every two days. Biermann is coming off of an Achilles injury.

Falcons linebacker Paul Worrilow, who had 15 tackles in the season opener last week, finished one short of that Week 2 at Cincinnati. He had 14 tackles, including six solo.

Worrilow averaged 12.2 tackles in his final nine games last season after beginning the year in a reserve role.

James Stone

With center Peter Konz (ACL) out for the season, the Falcons are going with undrafted rookie James Stone at center Sunday against the Lions. He'll be Atlanta's third center this season after the team put Joe Hawley and Konz on injured reserve.

Stone has played in three games. Quarterback Matt Ryan said Stone performed well after replacing Konz in the first quarter Week 7 at Baltimore. "I thought James Stone did a great job of coming in and filling in for Peter," Ryan told the team's website.

Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers didn't make much of an impact in the running game Week 12 vs. Cleveland, totaling three carries for 16 yards. However, he made his presence felt in the passing game by hauling in a touchdown during a 26-24 loss.

Falcons running backs Steven Jackson and Devonta Freeman were both held in check, as the compiled 69 rushing yards in Sunday's 19-17 victory over the Panthers in Week 11.

Jackson was the primary back and was limited to six carries for 18 yards on the ground in the first half. He finished the game with 41 yards on 17 carries. He caught two of three targets for 6 yards.

Freeman rushed for 28 yards on six attempts. He was not targeted in the passing game.

The Falcons will face the Browns in Week 12.

Jackson spent the first five years of his career with the Chiefs. In 2013, he had four sacks and 33 total tackles.

The Falcons announced Tuesday that linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will miss the entire 2014 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during a workout.

"During Sean's run today with our medical staff, he suffered an injury," coach Mike Smith said in a statement. "We sent Sean to the doctor for some additional testing and evaluation and unfortunately the results showed that he ruptured his Achilles tendon. Sean had been working extremely hard to get back on the field, but regrettably he will miss the entire 2014 season. He will have a procedure done in the near future and we expect him to make a full recovery."

Weatherspoon is entering the final year of his contract and will be a free agent after this year.

Falcons running back Steven Jackson recorded his third rushing touchdown in his last four games and tallied his fifth rushing touchdown this season during a 26-24 loss Week 12 vs. Cleveland. He now has 67 career rushing touchdowns.

Jackson had a team-high 34 rushing yards on 13 carries, while adding two catches for 17 yards. He was able to cut the Cleveland deficit to 23-21 with a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:31 left in the fourth quarter.

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw two touchdowns Sunday against the Browns. However, the Falcons lost a close game on a last-second field goal, as Cleveland escaped with a 26-24 win Week 12.

Ryan completed 27 of 43 passes for 273 yards, while rushing for 6 yards on two carries. However, Ryan had some turnover issues Sunday. He threw one interception and lost one fumble in the loss.

Ryan gave Atlanta a 7-0 lead when he connected with Julio Jones for a 24-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He put Atlanta back in front, 14-13, with an 8-yard touchdown pass to running back Jacquizz Rodgers with 55 seconds left in the first half. 

Sunday was just the second time in seven games Ryan had multiple touchdown passes. The Falcons are back in action Week 13 vs. Arizona.

The Falcons' first splash in free agency this spring was a big one -- figuratively and literally. The team has agreed to terms with defensive tackle Paul Soliai, formerly with the Dolphins, and offensive lineman Jon Asamoah, formerly with the Chiefs, ESPN reports. 

Soliai was reportedly on the Falcons' radar for a while. A pure run stuffer, Soliai has missed one game over the last four years. Asamoah, a product from Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois, started nine of 14 games for the Chiefs last year and 15 games the year before that.
