Antone Smith
News
With Steven Jackson sidelined, Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers and Antone Smith both worked ahead of rookie runner Devonta Freeman during Friday's preseason opener against Miami.

Rodgers got the start and made his impact felt on the opening drive, which ended on a 2-yard touchdown run. He rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, averaging 2.9 yards per carry. He was not targeted in the passing game.

Antone Smith broke free for a 76-yard touchdown in the second series with the second-team offense, but had the play called back because of a holding penalty. He finished with three carries for 5 yards and one catch for 5 yards.

Dezmen Southward
News
With the 68th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Falcons selected Wisconsin safety Dezmen Southward .

He's 6-feet and 211 pounds with long arms, brute strength and excellent speed (4.38 in the 40-yard dash). Southward only started playing football as a high school senior but played a school-record 54 games at Wisconsin, impressive considering he's a violent tackler.

He should begin his career as a special teamer but could compete for snaps at safety.

Roddy White
News
Falcons receiver Julio Jones told Fox Sports that he and Roddy White both could eclipse 1,500 receiving yards. No NFL team ever has had two wideouts surpass that number in a season.

"I think it’s possible, absolutely," quarterback Matt Ryan said. "When you look at what Roddy has done historically here, he’s always been consistent. I think everybody knows what he’s capable of doing. Julio has had three really good years when he has been healthy. Last year through five games, certainly he was on pace to do that.

"I’m lucky to have two of the best guys and the best tandem in the NFL. I think they’re both going to have big years."

"Drew felt some discomfort in his foot at the end of minicamp," coach Mike Smith told the team's website. "We decided to send him to the doctors for some evaluations and it was determined he had suffered an injury that would require a procedure. He recently had the procedure done and we expect him to miss around six weeks, which is why we have decided to place him on Training Camp PUP."

Davis caught 12 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns last year while playing a key special teams role.

Toilolo figures to start now that Tony Gonzalez has retired. He won't get nearly as many passes thrown his way, but could become a red-zone factor. Toilolo caught 11 balls for 55 yards and two touchdowns last season while appearing in every game.

Then we’ll make a decision going into the fourth preseason game on who is going to be our starter at nickel."

Robert McClain, Josh Wilson and Javier Arenas are competing for the job.

Injury
Knee - Out for season
Bear Pascoe
News
With the retirement of Tony Gonzalez, the Falcons are undergoing a change in philosophy about their tight end position, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. General manager Thomas Dimitroff said there weren't a lot of athletic pass-catching tight ends available in the draft, and the team will be more traditional in its 2014 approach.

Look for Atlanta's tight ends to line up on the line of scrimmage and block more. The team wants to be more physical up front.

"There’ll be a change in the type of tight end we’ll have on our roster," coach Mike Smith told the paper. "We’ll have a ‘Y’ tight end, where he’ll be an inline player (lined up tight to the formation). They won’t be moving around nearly as much as what we call an ‘F.’ Tony Gonzalez was more of an ‘F’ tight end than a ‘Y’ tight end."

Levine Toilolo, who had 11 catches as a rookie last year, and blocking tight end Bear Pascoe sit atop the depth chart.

Kemal Ishmael
News
The Falcons' list of inactives for Week 14 at Green Bay includes running back Josh Vaughan, defensive back Kemal Ishmael, linebacker Omar Gaither, offensive lineman Harland Gunn, offensive lineman Terren Jones, offensive lineman Sean Locklear and defensive lineman Travian Robertson. News
The Falcons have yet to settle on a winner of the competition for nickel cornerback duties, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

With left tackle Sam Baker out for the season with a torn patella tendon, the Falcons moved first-round pick Jake Matthews to left tackle in practice Monday, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Lamar Holmes, who started at left tackle most of last season, was moved to right tackle.

Paul Soliai

The Falcons' first splash in free agency this spring was a big one -- figuratively and literally. The team has agreed to terms with defensive tackle Paul Soliai, formerly with the Dolphins, and offensive lineman Jon Asamoah, formerly with the Chiefs, ESPN reports.

Soliai was reportedly on the Falcons' radar for a while. A pure run stuffer, Soliai has missed one game over the last four years. Asamoah, a product from Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois, started nine of 14 games for the Chiefs last year and 15 games the year before that.
