He's 6-feet and 211 pounds with long arms, brute strength and excellent speed (4.38 in the 40-yard dash). Southward only started playing football as a high school senior but played a school-record 54 games at Wisconsin, impressive considering he's a violent tackler.

News
Falcons receiver Julio Jones said when healthy, he and Roddy White are the best receiver tandem in the NFL, reports ESPN.

"When you step on the field, you should feel that you're the best, you and whoever your partner is," Jones said. "I feel like me and Roddy, we're the best when we step on the field. We take it as a challenge every year: We want to go out and show everybody we're the best one-two in the league."

The key for Jones and White is staying on the field. Last season, Jones played in just five games after suffering a season-ending fracture in his right foot while White was hobbled by hamstring and ankle injuries.

"We weren't there to play in the party," White said. "But this year, we're going to be there to play in the party. So at the end of the season, we'll come together, and then we'll see what happens."

He recently had the procedure done and we expect him to miss around six weeks, which is why we have decided to place him on Training Camp PUP."

Sam Baker
News
Falcons offensive tackle Sam Baker, who underwent season-ending knee surgery last year, said he expects to receive full clearance this week, reports ESPN.

"I'm feeling good," Baker said Monday night. "In a couple days, I should be cleared. I've been running, doing everything, and I should get fully cleared in a couple days. It's great, especially because we're getting ready with the offseason stuff, to be able to get out with the offense and to be able to go back to doing plays and stuff like that."

Baker had problems with his left knee last season and attempted to resolve the issue with platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment, but it didn’t respond. In November, the team announced he would undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

Baker played in just four games last season after starting all 16 games in 2012 and performing well at left tackle. The former first-round draft pick is due to make $7.25 million this season with a cap value of $6.05 million.

Bear Pascoe
News
With the retirement of Tony Gonzalez, the Falcons are undergoing a change in philosophy about their tight end position, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. General manager Thomas Dimitroff said there weren't a lot of athletic pass-catching tight ends available in the draft, and the team will be more traditional in its 2014 approach.

Look for Atlanta's tight ends to line up on the line of scrimmage and block more. The team wants to be more physical up front.

"There’ll be a change in the type of tight end we’ll have on our roster," coach Mike Smith told the paper. "We’ll have a ‘Y’ tight end, where he’ll be an inline player (lined up tight to the formation). They won’t be moving around nearly as much as what we call an ‘F.’ Tony Gonzalez was more of an ‘F’ tight end than a ‘Y’ tight end."

Levine Toilolo, who had 11 catches as a rookie last year, and blocking tight end Bear Pascoe sit atop the depth chart.

Kemal Ishmael
News
The Falcons' list of inactives for Week 14 at Green Bay includes running back Josh Vaughan, defensive back Kemal Ishmael, linebacker Omar Gaither, offensive lineman Harland Gunn, offensive lineman Terren Jones, offensive lineman Sean Locklear and defensive lineman Travian Robertson. All are healthy scratches.

News

Paul Worrilow
News
Falcons linebacker Paul Worrilow, who played at 232 pounds last season, has added about 10 pounds of muscle and should play at around 245 this year, reports the team's website. Jacquizz Rodgers
News
Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers figures to lose time to rookie runner Devonta Freeman, especially opportunities to catch passes out of the backfield. Rodgers told ESPN.com he's not worried about being overlooked.

"There are no concerns," Rodgers said. "You've got to come and compete every year. It just makes the group better, bringing more guys. It makes everybody work harder at practice. We're going to work collectively. We're going to learn from each other. And we're going to make each other better each and every day."

Rodgers caught 52 passes and scored four touchdowns last season, two as a receiver. He endorsed the drafting of Freeman.

"He's a good running back," Rodgers said. "Comes from a winning program. Fast guy: a guy that's willing to learn, willing to learn from the older guys. He's a good piece to our puzzle in the backfield."

Jake Matthews
News
The Falcons signed first-round pick Jake Matthews, an offensive tackle from Texas A&M, and second-round pick Ra'Shede Hageman, a defensive end from Minnesota. Matthews was a consensus All-American who's expected to start immediately. Hageman posted 13 tackles for loss last season.
Devonta Freeman
News
Falcons head coach Mike Smith said Wednesday that rookie rusher Devonta Freeman needs to work on his pass protection

"He's doing a nice job. He's got great vision, he's got great stop-and-start ability," Smith said per the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "The big thing that he needs to work on is the ability to work in pass protection because we ask our backs to do a lot."

Freeman should work into the run game rotation behind Steven Jackson this year.

Jon Asamoah
News
The Falcons' first splash in free agency this spring was a big one -- figuratively and literally. The team has agreed to terms with defensive tackle Paul Soliai, formerly with the Dolphins, and offensive lineman Jon Asamoah, formerly with the Chiefs, ESPN reports.

Soliai was reportedly on the Falcons' radar for a while. A pure run stuffer, Soliai has missed one game over the last four years. Asamoah, a product from Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois, started nine of 14 games for the Chiefs last year and 15 games the year before that.

Joe Hawley
News
The Falcons re-signed center Joe Hawley to a two-year deal, reports ESPN's Adam Caplan. Hawley replaced Peter Konz and started the final seven games last season.
Tyson Jackson
News
The Falcons have agreed to a deal with free agent defensive lineman Tyson Jackson, reports the NFL Network.

Jackson spent the first five years of his career with the Chiefs. In 2013, he had four sacks and 33 total tackles.

Sean Weatherspoon
News
The Falcons announced Tuesday that linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will miss the entire 2014 season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during a workout.

"During Sean's run today with our medical staff, he suffered an injury," coach Mike Smith said in a statement. "We sent Sean to the doctor for some additional testing and evaluation and unfortunately the results showed that he ruptured his Achilles tendon. Sean had been working extremely hard to get back on the field, but regrettably he will miss the entire 2014 season. He will have a procedure done in the near future and we expect him to make a full recovery."

Weatherspoon is entering the final year of his contract and will be a free agent after this year.

The Falcons signed cornerback Jordan Mabin, receiver Dominique Croom and tight end Mickey Schuler to reserve/futures contracts, enabling them to participate in offseason workouts. All three spent time on the team's practice squad in 2013.
Peter Konz
News
Falcons CB Robert Alford and OL Peter Konz are probable Week 17.

Alford is dealing with an ankle injury, but was able to practice in full Friday. Konz has a neck injury, but fully participated in practice throughout the week.

Robert McClain
News
The Falcons re-signed defensive back Robert McClain Friday, though the terms of the deal are not yet known.

McClain played in all 16 games for the Falcons last season, with six starts, and recorded 66 tackles and five pass defenses. He was a restricted free agent this offseason, but did not find much interest with a seventh-round tender attached to him.

Steven Jackson
News
Steven Jackson is fully expected to begin the season as the Falcons' primary rusher, but ESPN has seen enough from rookie running back Devonta Freeman to believe that he'll push Jackson enough to make it a camp battle worth watching

Per ESPN, Freeman was drafted with the intention of eventually being a three-down player for the Falcons. But "[i]f he looks as good in pads as he did in shorts, Jackson might have a battle on his hands."

Jackson will turn 31 before the start of the season and has well over 2,500 career carries.

Matt Ryan
News
The Falcons are talking about being a balanced offense this season and going with a 50-50 split with the run and pass plays. But ESPN reports that's not likely to happen with Matt Ryan and Co.

The report says that even though offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has acknowledged a renewed emphasis on the run game, the Falcons will still rely on Ryan, Julio Jones and Roddy White to carry the offense. New offensive line coach Mike Tice seems to agree.

"We're not going to be a run-first football team, by any means, with those two great receivers and that great quarterback," Tice said. "But when that man -- my buddy Dirk Koetter -- dials up the run, we better be able to run it for 4 yards."

The report says don't anticipate Ryan again attempting a career-high 651 passes like he did last season. The Falcons played their share of games from behind, forcing Ryan into even more throwing situations.

But the report says Ryan should be among the Top 5 quarterbacks in passing yards for a third consecutive season, especially with Jones and White now healthy.

Lamar Holmes
News
Lamar Holmes will start at left tackle Monday night in place of Sam Baker, and that might sound like bad news for Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. In 248 snaps on both the right and left side, Holmes has given up two sacks, five quarterback hits and 17 hurries, according to Pro Football Focus.

The website rates Holmes, who's committed two penalties, seventh-worst out of 71 NFL tackles. However, Baker is actually the worst-rated tackle this season. In 140 snaps, he's allowed a sack, six hits and 10 hurries while committing three penalties.

Baker is inactive with a knee injury.

Julio Jones
News
Falcons receiver Julio Jones has been cleared for training camp practice, the next step in his recovery from a broken foot, but coach Mike Smith said he'll be limited in his snaps.

"Our number one goal is to make sure that we've got everybody as healthy as we possibly can be, but we know that we have to get these guys some work together and reps. Julio will be out there participating in practice right from the start," Smith added per the Atlanta Journal Constitution

Matt Bryant
News
Falcons kicker Matt Bryant hit two field goals in the final game of the season in Week 17 Sunday against the Panthers.

Bryant was 2 of 2 on field goals and hit two extra points against Carolina. His long field goal was 42 yards.

Paul Soliai

With Julio Jones out for the season and Roddy White dealing with hamstring and ankle injuries, the Falcons are holding tryouts at receiver, according to reporter Howard Balzer. The team is bringing in wideouts Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie, Courtney Roby and Matt Willis, the report said.
Peria Jerry
News
The Falcons announced the re-signing of defensive lineman Peria Jerry Wednesday, though terms of the deal are not yet known.

Jerry appeared in 16 games last season, recording 33 tackles and 3.5 sacks in the most productive season of his career. The former first-round pick has just 5.5 sacks in five seasons.
