The Panthers extended the contracts of defensive end Mario Addison, safety Colin Jones and offensive tackle Nate Chandler. The team made the announcement on Wednesday. 

Addison received a two-year extension following three seasons of work in which he totaled 3.5 sakcs and 36 total tackles, most of which came on special teams. Jones also got a two-year extension and has similarly contributed on special teams, tallying 27 total tackles over 44 games. 

Chandler got a three-year extension and should begin the season as a starting tackle for the Panthers.

Panthers safety Roman Harper came down with an interception Week 1 against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Harper picked off Josh McCown late in the third quarter, which led to a touchdown. He finished with just two total tackles (one solo) and one pass defended in a 20-14 victory.

Panthers starting left guard Amini Silatolu, who tore his ACL in Week 4 last season, should be "ready to roll" when the offseason program begins in April, reports the team's website. The return of the 6-4, 311-pounder would be a big boost to Cam Newton and the entire offense.

Silatolu was a second-round pick in 2012.

The Panthers signed former Jets receiver Stephen Hill to the practice squad Tuesday, terminating the contract of linebacker D.J. Smith in a related move.

Hill, a second-round pick in 2012, caught 45 passes for 594 yards and four touchdowns in 23 games played over two seasons. With a wide-open depth chart at his position in Carolina, Hill has the opportunity to work his way into playing time if he can impress his new team on the practice field.

Panthers cornerback Charles Godfrey has been slow to adjust to his new position in his transition from safety, ESPN.com reports.

Godfrey, who is returning from a torn Achilles, has what coach Ron Rivera calls "dirty eyes," peeking into the backfield during plays and getting beat deep. He has an uphill battle ahead if he wants to win a starting job before the beginning of the season.

Stewart attempted to get through practice this week despite a knee injury. The other six players are healthy scratches.

Panthers rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin stayed on the fast track to stardom Sunday night with his first 100-yard game. He caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Steelers.

Benjamin made a slew of contested catches, including a 35-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter from Derek Anderson. Benjamin drew a game-high 11 targets and is now averaging nine targets per game.

While he again dropped a couple passes, Benjamin has clearly emerged as Carolina's No. 1 receiver. He has 253 receiving yards and two scores entering Week 4 at Baltimore.

Philly Brown
News
With Carolina hurting at receiver, Panthers rookie Philly Brown got his first start Week 3 and had some strong moments, catching seven passes for 66 yards. But Brown made a huge mistake that virtually killed his team's comeback chances.

Early in the fourth quarter, he fumbled a punt return and the Steelers receovered for a touchdown.

An Onio State product, Brown drew nine targets, second-most on the team. The catches were the first of his career. He'll look to improve Week 4 at Baltimore.

The Redskins have sliced their roster down to the league-mandated 53 with several cuts on Saturday.

Included among the waived offensive players are running backs Evan Royster, Lache Seastrunk and Chris Thompson. Also gone from that side of the ball are wide receiver Nick Williams and lineman Maurice Hurt .

Defenders cut loose are cornerback Chase Minnifield, linebacker Everette Brown and safety Phillip Thomas.

Placekicker Zach Hocker has also been waived.

The Redskins have also placed defensive tackle Chris Neild and linebacker Darryl Sharpton on the reserve/injured list and defensive end Stephen Bowen and wide receiver Leonard Hankerson on the PUP list.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton completed 24 of 35 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions in Sunday night's loss to the Steelers. Newton ran twice for 7 yards and lost a fumble on a sack.

Newton was under heavy pressure as his line couldn't hold up against the Steelers' rush. He took three sacks and was seen walking gingerly at times. Newton's highlight came early in the fourth quarter when he found tight end Greg Olsen for a 37-yard touchdown.

Newton didn't finish the game because it was a blowout. He'll visit the Ravens in Week 4.

Panthers cornerback Antoine Cason came down with his first interception of the season in his first game with his new team Sunday against the Buccaneers.

Luke Kuechly batted a pass thrown by Josh McCown and Cason benefited with an interception in the first quarter. Cason led the team with nine total tackles and two defended passes in a 20-14 victory.

New Panthers tight end Ed Dickson heads into training camp looking to solidify his role as the No. 2 option behind starter Greg Olsen, reports the Charlotte Observer.

Dickson had "an impressive showing during OTAs." He had 25 catches for 273 yards and one touchdown last year in Baltimore.

The Panthers defense played well Sunday in Week 17 at Atlanta, highlighted by nine sacks in a 21-20 victory.

The leader of the defense was Greg Hardy with four sacks. Charles Johnson also added two sacks. Melvin White also had an interception for a touchdown.

The Panthers are off until the Divisional Round of the playoffs. They locked up the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye after winning the NFC South title.

NFL Defensive Player of the Year Luke Kuechly said he's working on his pass rushing moves.

"I just think that everybody's goal is to get better, and that's my goal," Kuechly told the team's website. "My personal goals are really to just get better at pass rush, working on some moves, working on counter-moves that will allow me to do some more things. I think last year I got stuck in a couple spots in pass rush and it led to big plays because they were counting on me getting there and I wasn't quite able to.

"Same thing with pass coverage. I was talking to Thomas (Davis) about it a little bit today and he said it's just you've got to be confident in what you're doing. The more reps I get at it, the more confident I'll get, the better I'll feel about it."

Kuechly, a 23-year-old linebacker, had 156 tackles, seven pass breakups, four interceptions and two sacks last year.

The Panthers drafted defensive tackle Star Lotulelei 14th overall last April and got "everything they hoped for," according to the team's website. The 6-2, 315-pound rookie helped Carolina improve from 14th in run defense (110.1 yards allowed per game) to second in 2013 (86.9).

He started all 16 regular-season games, getting 47 tackles, three sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. In the playoff loss to San Francisco, Lotulelei made six tackles, one for loss.

Panthers quarterback Derek Anderson relieved Cam Newton in the fourth quarter of the Week 3 loss to the Steelers and played well. Anderson completed 5 of 6 throws for 80 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown to rookie wideout Kelvin Benjamin.

Anderson will go back to the bench for Week 4 at Baltimore.

Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander has been suspended without pay for the team's first four games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL policy and program for substances of abuse, the team announced Friday.

He will be eligible to return to the Panthers' active roster on Monday, Sept. 29 following the team's game against the Ravens on Sept. 28. Alexander may participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

The two-year veteran played in 12 games with three starts last season and posted 12 tackles, one sack, five quarterback pressures, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed.

The Panthers restructured center Ryan Kalil's contract, reducing his 2014 base salary from $4.75 million to $855,000 and converting the remainder to a signing bonus, reports the Charlotte Observer. Kalil is one of three Panthers who had his deal redone, enabling Carolina to create $7.25 million in cap room.

Kalil's 2014 cap number fell from $10.4 million to $7.3 million.
