Greg Jennings

New Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner hopes the team lands a dynamic young quarterback but believes running back Adrian Peterson remains the key to success, reports the Minneapolis StarTribune.

“We want to make big plays, we want to be an explosive offense, and we want to run the ball,” Turner said at his introductory press conference. With an offense that includes Peterson, receiver Greg Jennings and all-purpose threat Cordarrelle Patterson, Turner believes Minnesota can improve quickly.

“I looked at the roster, I looked at the offensive side of the ball," he said. "I think this is a group that can be real good, and I think we can be good real fast.”

News
The Vikings agreed to terms with free-agent defensive back Derek Cox on a one-year deal Thursday, according to U-T San Diego. Financial terms for the deal are not yet known.

Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph hopes to stay in Minnesota on a long-term contract, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Rudolph is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He said Tuesday that the team, which still has approximately $10 million in salary cap space after a busy offseason, has not approached him about a contract extension.

"I've really enjoyed my time here, from the top down, in our organization," Rudolph said. "I think we have the best owners in football. They're willing to do anything for us to win. Everybody in the front office, the new staff, I really like the direction this team is going in. I'm excited to be a part of that future."

Rudolph is hoping to bounce back after he was limited to eight games in 2013 because of a fracture in his left foot. He caught 30 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns before injuring his foot in a Week 9 loss to the Cowboys.

He has been studying tape of the Browns from last season so he can get a feel for how he will be utilized in new coordinator Norv Turner's offense. Tight ends such as Jay Novacek, Antonio Gates and Jordan Cameron produced impressive numbers in three different decades with Turner calling the plays.

"I hope to fall in line with that," Rudolph said. "I'm excited to get into this offense."

Johnson has started all but one game over the last three years for the Vikings.

Adrian Peterson
News
With Toby Gerhart rumbling south to Jacksonville, the Vikings are in the market for another running back. ESPN thinks the primary goal the team will have for a new back is to be efficient in pass protection, which Adrian Peterson hasn't always been great at. The report believes Peterson could play more on third downs as a receiver rather than stay in to block since he's not an elite blocker, provided the team doesn't fill the third-down role in the draft.

Peterson has 29 or more catches in four of his last five seasons with one receiving score in each of his last four years. Catching passes is a big part of Norv Turner's offenses, so it's something Peterson could end up doing more of.

Christian Ponder
News
Christian Ponder's presence on the roster does not figure into the Vikings' quarterback plans. "We have to have a quarterback, so we are going to have to find some, and that is why we are out here looking so hard and why we'll continue to look in free agency," new coach Mike Zimmer said, per NFL.com. "We'll find a guy."

Minnesota could select a quarterback with the No. 8 overall pick. The Vikes also have met with Matt Cassel in an effort to re-sign the free agent.
