La Canfora is speculating that the Browns could part with Nate Burleson and that the Jets might let go of fellow wide receiver Stephen Hill. The former has been limited by injury in the preseason while the latter has proven disappointing throughout his young career.

He's a smart player scheme-wise, but he knows how to play. He's a very instinctive player. … On a personal level, I never really had a personal relationship with him. So I've enjoyed that part of it."

Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins was brought along slowly as a rookie, but is now in position to become "a rare three-down player" in the team's system, reports ESPN.com. Collins had an interception, a sack and six tackles in the playoff win over the Colts following a regular season in which he made 43 tackles and broke up four passes.

Expectations have been raised, the website said, and Collins has "star potential."

Patriots running back Shane Vereen found the end zone twice during Friday’s preseason game against the Panthers.

Vereen caught a short pass on a wheel route and took it 40 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. He then caught a short 6-yard pass from Tom Brady for a touchdown in the third quarter. He worked into the third quarter and finished with 75 yards of total offense. He took six handoffs for 18 yards and caught five passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said tight end Timothy Wright is "not playing as well as he should be playing," reports the Tampa Bay Times. "He's dropped some balls. If you've been watching him at practice, he's dropped balls. He's a big part of what we want to do with the two-receiver, two-tight end set. Tim hasn't blocked as well inside."

Wright is behind rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Brandon Myers.

Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, who's coming back from a ruptured Achilles, looked good during the team's first practice and said he's working without restrictions.

"If I had limitations, I wouldn’t be practicing," Wilfork told the Boston Herald. "My job is to help my teammates the best way I can, whatever that may be. The only way for me to help my teammates is to be on the field and be healthy. Right now, I’m on the field and I’m healthy. If anything happens in the future, I can’t predict that. But right now my job is to help this team the best way I can and get better each day and that’s what I’m going to do."

New Patriots cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner are meshing well with the team's defensive backs, safety Devin McCourty told the Boston Herald. "It seems those two guys are going to fit right in very well," he said.

"Revis and Browner coming in there, we’re excited just because we know what they’re able to do. I think our focus now is being able to put it together as a unit, so right now, we’re just working out. We’re just getting to know each other, hanging out, cracking jokes in the locker room. I think this is one of the more fun times of the season when you’re just getting better as a unit."

Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo leaped over Ryan Mallett in the depth chart and was used as the first backup during Friday's preseason game against the Eagles.

Garoppolo entered the game for Tom Brady on the third drive of the game and fired a 15-yard touchdown pass to James Develin. On the ensuing drive, he hooked up with Brandon LaFell for a 4-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter. He completed 6 of 12 pass attempts for 72 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He finished with a 108.3 quarterback rating.

Mallett started the third quarter in place of Garoppolo and scored on a 6-yard run in his first drive. He then fired a 17-yard touchdown to Brian Tyms, who leaped over the defender to make the grab. He completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 92 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He was sacked once and had four rushes for 9 yards.

White entered the game on the second drive of the night and had six carries for nine yards with Tom Brady under center. He finished the game with 10 carries for 27 yards. Through two games, White has 36 yards on 14 carries, averaging 2.6 yards per attempt.

Patriots second-year wideout Aaron Dobson felt encouraged by his 2014 preseason debut Thursday night against the Giants.

Dobson caught three passes for 57 yards and a 33-yard touchdown in the second quarter that provided his team's first score. Not bad considering he's coming off March surgery on his left foot.

"I feel like everything is coming," Dobson told the Boston Herald. "I can't say everything is back. It's my first game back, so I've still got to feel everything out. I'm still getting my confidence, just building my confidence and growing as much as I can."

Dobson missed all of the offseason workouts and didn't begin his training camp until Aug. 11.

Patriots receiver Brian Tyms told reporters he is suspended for the first four regular-season games because he took Adderall without clearing it with the NFL. Tyms said he's had a prescription for Adderall since he was 9.

On Thursday against the Redskins, Tyms caught five passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. His suspension was handed down in May.

Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich, who had eight sacks last season, could have a bigger year thanks to the additions of cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. If the secondary covers receivers longer, Ninkovich can get to the quarterback more often.

"I’m happy to have some of the new guys coming in, and we’ve got the best corner in the league coming in, so that’s always a good thing for a defensive end like myself," Ninkovich told the Boston Herald. "Just give me a little more time, I’ll be happy to use that."
