The New York Post reports Jets decision-makers are "in love" with rookie quarterback Geno Smith, who impressed during a recent minicamp both on and off the field. He held a players only meeting at the team hotel to work on the playbook, he handled the media with aplomb and threw well during practices. The report believes Smith did so well that he could eventually take over for David Garrard, not Mark Sanchez, when the season gets going.

With the 13th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, the Jets selected defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson out of Missouri. Richardson came out of nowhere in 2012 to be a dominant force in the SEC. But there were concerns that his one-year-wonder status might not translate to year-in, year-out productivity in the NFL. Clearly, this wasn't enough to scare off the Jets, who were no doubt impressed by Richardson's effort against Alabama last fall when he had a game-high 14 tackles against one of the country's best offensive lines. This was the pick the Jets acquired from the Bucs in the Darrelle Revis trade.

The Jets added to their tight end depth and promoted Hayden Smith to the active roster on Saturday. Smith has been on the practice squad for the entire season and took the roster spot of wide receiver Jason Hill after he was released.

The Jets placed defensive back Isaiah Trufant on injured reserve Tuesday as he will miss the rest of the season due to a left knee injury.

The Jets continued trimming their roster in preparation for the regular season and released quarterback Matt Simms on Friday. Simms, a rookie out of Tennessee, made his preseason debut Thursday at Philadelphia and connected on 3 of his 6 passes for just nine yards.

On Tuesday the Jets released pass rushing linebacker Calvin Pace, safety Eric Smith, offensive tackle Jason Smith and waived tight end Josh Baker. The move opened up roughly $24 million in salary cap space.

Notable players cut by the Vikings Friday include: wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux, defensive tackle Chase Baker, cornerback Chris Carr, defensive end Jeff Charleston, fullback Ryan D’Imperio, cornerback Bobby Felder, safety Eric Frampton, defensive tackle Trevor Guyton, running back Lex Hilliard, cornerback Reggie Jones, linebacker Corey Paredes, defensive end Nick Reed, quarterback Sage Rosenfels, tight end Mickey Shuler and running back Jordan Todman.

The Newark Star-Ledger reports Jets receiver Stephen Hill has been working out in New Jersey since February and is 100 percent for training camp after suffering a knee injury last year. Hill said he's more prepared for this season after struggling after Week 1 of last season. He also recognizes the opportunity in front of him with the Jets' receiving corps thinned out this offseason. Lastly, Hill says he loves the new offense that playcaller Marty Mornhinweg has brought with him from Philadelphia. "It's different from coach (Tony) Sparano's," Hill said. "Coach Mornhinweg is definitely trying to put the ball in the air, let us receivers go and get it. He definitely has preached us make sure we run routes correctly and preached to make sure we catch the ball right."

Jets head coach Rex Ryan called out outside linebacker Quinton Coples for a poor work ethic in the weight room. Coples led the Jets in sacks last year. "If Quinton doesn't do a better job in the weight room, then he might have to ... he's going to have to compete like anyone else for a job," Ryan said. "I'm a little disappointed in Q in the weight room the last day. ... It was yesterday (the poor showing in the weight room), he's been doing a great job but any chance I have to get him I'm going to. It's like, I expect so much from him and if he lets up a little bit, we're going to make sure he knows about it."

Jets linebacker DeMario Davis posted a season-high seven tackles during New York's 29-26 overtime loss to New England in Week 7. Davis, the team's third-round draft pick in last April's draft, easily surpassed his season total entering the game (four) as he tallied six solo stops.

The New York Post reports that Jets running back Joe McKnight wants to be the featured option in the backfield, ahead of Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson and Bilal Powell. “Words can’t even describe how badly I want to be that guy," McKnight said. “I’ve got an edge — a fire to me ... so I can show everybody that I can play. When I’m out there practicing it’s like I’m [ticked] off. I’ve got to play the game [ticked] off. That gives me the edge and keeps me on top of my game."

Receiver Santonio Holmes did not attend the start of the Jets' voluntary offseason workouts Monday, instead choosing to work out and continue rehab on his own in Ohio, per the New York Daily News. Holmes is coming back from a Lisfranc injury on his left foot that he's already had two procedures on.

Foot - Questionable for start of training camp

Jets backup defensive back Aaron Berry was sidelined in the third quarter with a quadriceps injury and did not return during New York's 27-13 win over St. Louis in Week 11. Coach Rex Ryan said after the game he did not know the severity of the injury.

Jets defensive lineman Kenrick Ellis was unable to return to the team's Week 11 matchup at St. Louis after suffering a left knee injury in the first quarter. Coach Rex Ryan said after the game he did not know the severity of the injury.

Jets wide receiver Chaz Schilens posted two catches for 27 yards during New York's 17-10 victory at Jacksonville in Week 14. It was the third consecutive game Schilens had exactly two receptions as he averaged a decent 13.5 yards per catch while collecting three targets.

The Jets have announced the release of linebacker Bart Scott.

Jets linebackers Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas each recorded a sack in Sunday's Week 8 loss to the Dolphins. Pace and Thomas each took down the Miami quarterback in the game. Thomas had four tackles and two for losses and Pace finished with four tackles with one for a loss. Each player had three solo tackles.

The Jets waived safety Antonio Allen Tuesday.

"Barring something unforeseen," veteran quarterback Mark Brunell is expected to announce his retirement, according to the Florida Times-Union. Brunell played 19 season in the NFL, most recently with the Jets. "Most guys that have trouble leaving the game are in their 20s," Brunell said. "I've been preparing for football to be over with for quite some time."

The Jets promoted cornerback Donnie Fletcher from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday.

The Dolphins waived the following players Saturday: DT Chas Alecxih, TE Les Brown, CB Marcus Brown, S Tyrell Johnson, CB Trenton Hughes, LB Josh Linam, RB Jerome Messam, DE Jacquies Smith and CB Jonathan Wade.

The New York Jets have claimed free agent WR Marcus Davis off waivers from the New York Giants and released WR Antavious Wilson.

The Jets selected fullback Tommy Bohanon in the seventh round of the NFL Draft out of Wake Forest, and he will compete for a roster spot.

Jets defensive back Ellis Lankster left in the second half of Week 16 against San Diego with a concussion and did not return. Lankster, who is in his second season with New York, failed to register a tackle before the early exit.

The Jets and pass rusher Antwan Barnes have agreed to terms on a deal. He had 11 sacks in 2011 but three sacks in 2012.

Jets receiver Scott McKnight, who was on the practice squad, was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday. The Jets signed WR Michael Campbell to the practice squad in his place. McKnight suffered a torn ACL in his left knee.

Jets defensive lineman Garrett McIntyre recorded seven tackles and two sacks during New York's 27-10 loss at Pittsburgh in Week 2. McIntyre, who was starting in place of injured linebacker Bryan Thomas, also collected four tackles for a loss.

Jets running back Mike Goodson was arrested on drug and weapon charges early on Friday morning, reports News 12 in New Jersey. According to the report, Goodson and another man were found intoxicated in a parked SUV along Route 80 in Denville, New Jersey, which is about 15 miles northwest of the Jets' headquarters in Florham Park. A loaded .45-caliber handgun with hollow-point bullets was found in the SUV and when the 25-year-old running back was transported to a hospital for evaluation, marijuana was discovered in his possession. The Jets signed Goodson to a three-year, $6 million contract on March 15 to compete for a starting job this season. Goodson's deal with the Jets included a $1.93 million guaranteed. CBSSports.com blogger Will Brinson researched that illegal possession of hollow point bullets is a "crime of the fourth degree" in New Jersey, which appears to be among the states with the strictest laws regarding the ammunition.

LaDainian Tomlinson's brilliant NFL career will officially end when he ceremoniously rejoins the San Diego Chargers for a day. The Chargers said Sunday that Tomlinson, who was the NFL MVP in 2006 with San Diego and is the fifth-leading rusher in league history, will re-sign with the team on Monday and then announce his retirement. Tomlinson was drafted in the first round by San Diego in 2001 and became one of the biggest stars in team history, helping revive the Chargers after the devastating Ryan Leaf years and turning them into a force in the AFC West. He spent the first nine years of his career in San Diego. He played the last two seasons with the Jets. Tomlinson had said recently that he might continue his career if the right opportunity was available. Some fans hoped the Chargers would bring back Tomlinson as a third-down back, but that appeared impossible as long as general manager A.J. Smith was in control.

Jets defensive back Kyle Wilson finished with six tackles (five solo) for the second game in a row during New York's 7-6 win over Arizona in Week 13. Prior to his recent two-game stretch, Wilson has exceeded five tackles only once in the first 10 weeks of the season.

Jets defensive back Antonio Cromartie posted three tackles and a pass defended during New York's 17-10 win over Jacksonville in Week 14. Cromartie has now batted down 12 passes this season to match his total from last year as three have gone for interceptions. He shadowed Jaguars top receiver Justin Blackmon for most of the game and limited him to a modest average of 9.5 yards per catch on six receptions.

The Jets re-signed CB Donald Strickland on Saturday, reports the Newark Star-Ledger. Strickland, who played for the Chargers in 2010, was a member of the Jets in 2009.

Tight end Jeff Cumberland signed his one-year restricted free-agent tender with the Jets.

The Jets have waived S Gerald Alexander. He was signed to the active roster in December after he was waived by the Dolphins. He was originally selected by the Lions in the second round of the 2007 draft, and he spent time with Carolina and Jacksonville.

Jets quarterback David Garrard told SiriusXM Radio that swelling in his knee will force him to retire. Garrard had been practicing with the Jets and was a dark horse contender to start for them this season but his knee was "not holding up."

Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson remained active and finished with four tackles during New York's 28-9 loss at Buffalo in Week 17. Wilkerson, who was listed as probable on the injury report with a concussion and knee injury, also tallied three hits on quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Browns waived the following players Sunday: DB Emanuel Davis, LB JoJo Dickson, WR Carlton Mitchell, WR Bert Reed, WR Jermaine Saffold and WR Owen Spencer.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Eagles waived undrafted rookie cornerback Cliff Harris Sunday.

Jets running back Bilal Powell tallied 12 carries for 56 yards during New York's 29-8 loss at Buffalo in Week 17. Powell, who was active for the season finale after dismissing lingering shoulder and toe issues, also recorded two catches for 12 yards on six targets from quarterback Mark Sanchez. But he did most of his damage on the ground as he finished with just 18 fewer yards than starter Shonn Greene (19 carries).

The Jets continued tweaking their roster Saturday and released defensive lineman Marcus Dixon, according to the New York Post. The team also claimed three players off waivers: defensive lineman Isaako Aaitui; wide receiver Clyde Gates; and tight end Konrad Reuland.

The Boston Globe reports Sunday that the Patriots made some roster moves. The team announced that they signed TE Garrett Mills to an undisclosed contract, making room by waiving injured safety Bret Lockett.

The Jets promoted linebacker Ricky Sapp from the practice squad to the active roster Thursday.

The Oakland Raiders made their first round of cuts Monday and released the following players: linebacker Korey Bosworth; defensive lineman Mason Brodine; defensive back Aaron Henry; defensive lineman Wayne Dorsey; defensive back Chaz Powell; defensive back Terrail Lambert; wide receiver Thomas Mayo; wide receiver Dre Muhammad; quarterback Kyle Newhall-Caballero; running back Manase Tonga; and running back Rashawn Jackson.

The Eagles released defensive back Jaiquawn Jarrett Tuesday.

ESPN reports the Jets and pass rusher Calvin Pace have agreed to a one-year deal. Pace was cut earlier in the offseason due to a high salary cap number.

Jets wide receiver Clyde Gates left in the second quarter of Week 17 at Buffalo with a head injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Gates, who dealt with a concussion that forced him to miss three games earlier this season, suffered the injury while being tackled toward the end of the first half. He failed to record a catch before the early exit.

Jets linebacker Josh Mauga will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn pectoral muscle. He suffered the injury Week 5 against the Texans.

Jets linebacker David Harris recorded a game-high 10 tackles, including eight solo stops, during New York's 27-17 loss to San Diego in Week 16. It was the third time in the past five games Harris racked up 10 tackles as he lifted his season total to 118 tackles.

The Jets have released defensive lineman Sione Pouha according to multiple reports. He was due to earn $4.9 million this season, all of which would be guaranteed by March 15.

Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley had three catches for a team-high 88 yards during New York's 28-9 loss at Buffalo in Week 17. After several lackluster outings during the second half of the season, Kerley posted his highest yardage total since Week 7 against New England (120). The 24-year-old boosted his outing with a 40-yard catch -- his fourth reception of 40-plus yards this season. He also piloted the team's floundering wildcat formation instead of quarterback Tim Tebow, but failed to generate any yards on his lone attempt.

Chris Ivory is thrilled to have a chance to start for the Jets this season after being buried on the Saints' depth chart, but it's not without some challenges. Ivory is working in Marty Mornhinweg's version of the West Coast offense, a change from what he's been used to. "It's a little different," Ivory said. "I was so used to being in one system and now it's a completely different system." Ivory also challenged those critics who say he can't catch, adding that he hasn't been given the opportunity to do so.

Less than a week after being released by the Chargers, defensive lineman Antonio Garay agreed to a one-year deal with the Jets on Friday, ESPN.com reports. Garay, who spent time on New York's practice squad earlier in his career, spent the past three-plus season with San Diego.

ESPN reports that with David Garrard retiring, that should allow quarterback Mark Sanchez to remain with the Jets this season. New York’s quarterback competition has been reduced to four quarterbacks now. But in reality, there are only two legitimate options: Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith. The report says there was some debate of whether Sanchez would last in New York. The Jets would like to get rid of his huge salary but didn’t want to take the cap hit. However, Garrard had an opportunity to beat out Sanchez and provide the veteran leadership needed in New York's quarterback room. But post-Garrard, the Jets definitely need Sanchez now. He’s the only Jets quarterback with extensive experience. Sanchez is a four-year starter who has won playoff games and advanced to the AFC title game in back-to-back years following the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms have one career start among them.

After watching most of his starting teammates bolt last week, veteran kicker Nick Folk opted to stay with the Jets and re-signed with the club after being an unrestricted free agent. Folk has been with the Jets for three seasons after signing as a free agent in 2010. He was 21 of 27 on field-goal attempts last season, and 134 for 172 for his career. He spent his first three NFL seasons with Dallas.

Quarterback Tim Tebow is now free to sign with any team that may want him as he cleared waivers Tuesday. He was released by the Jets Monday. Tebow completed just 6 of 8 passes for 39 yards and racked up 102 yards rushing on 32 carries during his lone season in New York.

The Jets lost LaRon Landry to free agency this summer but might replace him with his brother, Dawan. The ex-Jaguar signed with the Jets. Dawan Landry previously worked with Jets coach Rex Ryan in Baltimore.

Two rookies drafted by the Jets are no longer with the Jets as the team cut rusher Terrance Ganaway and receiver Jordan White on Friday.

The New York Daily News reports that Jets general manager John Idzik said the team would consider bringing back free agent receiver Braylon Edwards. "Guys like that will be under consideration as we go forward, for sure," Idzik said.

Jets rookie cornerback Dee Milliner believes he'll be ready for the start of training camp. He was on a stationary bike during the first day of rookie minicamp drills as he recovers from shoulder surgery. "With the shoulder it's a long process, you can't just go right out there and jump right in," he told the Newark Star-Ledger. "You can't really swing your arm. Like I said, I'm just rehabbing, getting back in the role of things and I'll be fine. ... I'll be ready, you just have to go through your rehab now, do the things that's necessary to be able to get ready for training camp."

Shoulder - Questionable for start of training camp

North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples was the Jets' first draft pick, but he wasn't their only defensive draft pick. The team also picked up Arkansas State linebacker Demario Davis, Wake Forest safety Josh Bush and South Carolina safety Antonio Allen.

Jets quarterback Greg McElroy dismissed reports that indicated he hid a concussion in order to stay active and said he feels "fine" now, The Star-Ledger reports. McElroy said he shrugged off the symptoms earlier in the week as general effects after a game following his first NFL start in Week 16. It was only on Thursday that we went to the coaching staff with the issue and was ultimately ruled out for the season finale. "I didn’t really have any symptoms after the game," said McElroy, who was sacked 11 times by the Chargers. "You’re going to be tired. You’re going to be worn out. You’re going to have a bit of a headache. All of those things are normal for after a game."

The New York Jets have claimed free agent WR Marcus Davis off waivers from the New York Giants and released WR Antavious Wilson.

The Jets released tight end Dedrick Epps on Monday to clear a spot on the active roster for defensive back Aaron Berry. Epps was added from the Bears' practice squad last month and appeared in three games for New York.
