The Union-Tribune of San Diego reports that Gates hasn't been with the team at any practice open to the media this offseason.

"You tell him you love him, support him and you're with him," quarterback Philip Rivers said. " ... When the time is right and everything is taken care of, he'll be back. We look forward to getting him back."

He expects to be ready for training camp.

Tevin Reese
News
Chargers seventh-round pick Tevin Reese could be a steal due to his big-play ability, according to the team's website. The 5-10, 170-pound wideout was a three-time All-Big 12 honoree and left Baylor ranked third in career touchdowns (24), receptions (187) and yards (3,102).

His 21 career touchdowns of 40-plus yards set Baylor and NCAA records.

“He catches the ball really well and is a good route runner,” general manager Tom Telesco told the website. "He’s got a lot of production and a lot of big play production at Baylor. He’s so explosive. I think he had 21 touchdowns of 40-yards or more, so if he can give us a couple of those we’ll be good."

News
The Chargers signed former Steelers tight end David Johnson to a two-year deal. He played in five games last season, making four catches for 70 yards, before going on IR with a wrist injury.

News
Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd, who is coming back from last year's neck injury, looks like his old self, reports ESPN.

"Malcom is definitely a go-to guy," teammate Keenan Allen said. "He's one of the best athletes on the team. He's tall. He's fast. He's quick. It's kind of hard for a DB to get position on him because he's so big. Just the way he goes out there every day, he works hard and makes plays. He's just a motivational guy for me."

Marcus Gilchrist
News
As an undrafted rookie with the Chargers last year, defensive back Jahleel Addae worked his way up the depth chart and made three starts including one in the playoffs. Now he's setting his sights on putting on weight (he's already added seven pounds) as well as the starting safety job opposite Eric Weddle. He's competing with Marcus Gilchrist

"He's very instinctive in what he does," Chargers coach Mike McCoy said per ESPN. "And he's done some nice things already. For a young player, he's a great communicator. He does a great job on the back end."

Jarret Johnson
News
Chargers linebacker Jarret Johnson will take a pay cut to stay with the team next season, according to ESPN on Monday.

Johnson, 32, signed a four-year, $19 million deal in 2012 and missed five games with hamstring and hand injuries in 2013. The Chargers will save $1 million with the move.
Danny Woodhead
News
Chargers coach Mike McCoy indicated Tuesday during the NFL owners meetings that he plans to use a hot-hand approach with his running backs in 2014 following the addition of Donald Brown joining Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead.

McCoy said his background after working for John Fox in Carolina is using multiple running backs.

"You get in there, you get on a little bit of a roll and you’re going to stay in there," McCoy said. "Donald is a perfect fit for our system, and that’s why we went after him and got him. He understands what we want to do offensively, not only in the passing game but in the running game and pass protection. ... We'll let Donald come in there and show us what he can do, and we'll try to take advantage of what he does best and go with the flow of the game."

The report said the No. 1 priority for Te'o is just being ready for training camp.

Kendall Reyes
News
Several Chargers who were on the injury report are active for the game at Denver, including offensive tackles King Dunlap (ankle) and D.J. Fluker (ankle), center Nick Hardwick (neck/concussion), defensive end Kendall Reyes (ankle) and safety Eric Weddle (hamstring).
Donald Brown
News
Chargers running back Ryan Mathews isn't upset in the least that the team signed Donald Brown this offseason. In fact, he's welcoming it with open arms.

"I can't wait," Mathews said about playing with Brown, per U-T San Diego

Mathews is coming off of a career season but an ankle injury kept him limited down the stretch. While it's expected that Brown will help shoulder the load a little bit -- Mathews has been called the "bell cow" numerous times by general manager Tom Telesco -- Mathews anticipates that if he wants to play 16 games and break the 1,255 yards he had last year, he'll need Brown to fill in for him.

"I (want to) make it more than 16 games," Mathews said. "That was a big goal last year: 'Alright, let's get him through 16 games.' We did that. Now the goal is to keep me healthy, keep running after 16 games. The coaches did a good job of getting another guy like Donald to help me out. It's going to be fun."

News
The Dolphins waived the following players Saturday: DT Chas Alecxih, TE Les Brown, CB Marcus Brown, S Tyrell Johnson, CB Trenton Hughes, LB Josh Linam, RB Jerome Messam, DE Jacquies Smith and CB Jonathan Wade.
Donald Butler
News
Chargers middle linebacker Donald Butler, who just signed a multiyear contract to stay with the team, has missed 24 of a possible 64 games in his four-year career. A groin injury kept him out of four games each of the past two seasons.

“My biggest thing is I need to be on the field for all 16 games,” Butler said, per ESPN.com. “Obviously, the last two years, both years, I missed four games because of the same injury. To me, that’s unacceptable.

“You get paid to play all 16 games, and so my biggest thing is now I fully understand what I have to do this offseason to make sure that, come the regular season, I’m ready to go -- and that’s all 16 games, along with the playoff run we intend to make.”

Nick Novak
News
Chargers kicker Nick Novak slipped on his plant foot as he tried a 53-yard field goal that would have tied his career high. After that miss, Novak converted a 30-yarder and added two PATs for a five-point outing.

Novak finishes the season 35 of 39 on field goals.

John Phillips
News

Philip Rivers
News
The Chargers will let quarterback Philip Rivers run the no-huddle offense more frequently under new coordinator Frank Reich, reports NFL.com. It's a boost for the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year, who threw for nearly 4,500 yards with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season.
Steve Williams
News
The Chargers placed rookie cornerback Steve Williams on IR with a torn pectoral muscle, ending his season.
Brandon Flowers
News
New Chargers cornerback Brandon Flowers said part of his decision to sign with San Diego was the chance to face the Chiefs twice, reports ESPN. Flowers was cut by Kansas City this offseason.

"That definitely played in the decision," Flowers said in a radio interview in San Diego. "Just the way I play the game, I always felt like it would be fun. I never got that chance to play against an old team. Once I was on a team for my whole life, I was on that team for good. So just going back to play against some of the fellas and some of the coaches, it will definitely be fun. But I respect everybody in that program. They run a great program in Kansas City, and they have great fans in Kansas City. But just for personal reasons I think it will be fun to line up across those guys."

Flowers said he was caught off guard by Kansas City releasing him in a cost cutting move earlier this month.

"It’s a business," he said. "And in this business you have to roll with the punches. Once the release happened, my phone and my agent’s phone was a hotline. A lot of teams were calling, and a lot of teams were trying to bring me in because they’re not used to getting a six-year starter this late that can maybe fall into their lap."

Rich Ohrnberger
News
The Chargers re-signed guard Rich Ohrnberger to a one-year contract.
Shareece Wright
News
Several Chargers who were listed as probable on the injury report are active vs. Kansas City, including guard Jeromey Clary (hand), linebacker Thomas Keiser (elbow), defensive end Sean Lissemore (shoulder) and cornerback Shareece Wright (foot).
Keenan Allen
News
Chargers receiver Keenan Allen had a great rookie year in 2013 with 71 catches, 1,046 yards and eight touchdowns. But Allen is out to show doubters he's not just a one-hit wonder, reports ESPN.

"One thing for him that's going to be key -- and I think he knows this -- is not to relax and think you're going to just duplicate that year," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said. "They’re going to know where No. 13 is, have a plan for him and try to take away the things he does well."

Allen said a primary focus has been improving his speed. One reason Allen dropped to the third round in the 2013 draft is that he ran a slow time in the 40-yard dash at his pro day. Still recovering from a knee issue that cut short his final season at Cal, Allen was timed at about 4.65 seconds.

Allen believes he is faster now and fully healthy.

"I mean if you run a 4.3 or 4.4, that obviously says that you're fast," Allen said. "But a 4.6 guy can still make their way into the league. Some of the best receivers in the league ran a 4.5 or 4.6. So now that I'm healthy, I'm pretty sure I'm faster than 4.6."

Chris Davis
News
Following the draft, the Chargers signed 17 free agents from the college ranks: running back D.J. Adams (Portland State), receivers Torrence Allen (West Texas A&M), Brelan Chancellor (North Texas), Micah Hatfield (Oregon State) and Javontee Herndon (Arkansas), safety Alden Darby (Arizona State), cornerbacks Chris Davis (Auburn) and Gregory Ducre (Washington), tight end Michael Flacco (New Haven), guard Darryl Johnson (New Mexico), defensive linemen Tenny Palepoi (Utah) and Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe (Boise State), linebackers Alvin Scioneaux (Wofford) and Colton Underwood (Illinois State), offensive tackles Jeremiah Sirles (Nebraska) and Ian White (Boston College) and punter Chase Tenpenny (Nevada).

Ladarius Green
News
Chargers coaches believe tight end Ladarius Green "has the size, speed, reach and athleticism to be an impact player, especially if he gets the right matchups," reports Bleacher Report's Dan Pompei. Green "showed some flashes" in minicamp, and the team will involve the third-year pro more this season, the report said.

Green (6-6, 240) caught 17 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns playing behind Antonio Gates last year.

News
The Chargers listed guard Jeromey Clary (shoulder), defensive lineman Sean Lissemore (shoulder), quarterback Brad Sorenson, receiver Lavelle Hawkins, cornerback Marcus Cromartie, offensive tackle Kenny Wiggins and safety Brandon Taylor as inactive for the playoff game at Denver.
Johnnie Troutman
News
A critical unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in Week 13 against Cincinnati has cost Chargers guard Johnnie Troutman a start. He will be benched for the Sunday game against the visiting Giants.

Mike McCoy was angered when Troutman reacted to Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict stepping on his foot by shoving him and earning a 15-yard penalty.

"You have to be poised under pressure," McCoy told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's something whether you get baited or not, it's unacceptable. That's what I told him instantly after the play happened. ... It really hurt our football team."
