Lawrence Okoye
News
This might finally be the year Lawrence Okoye can crack a spot on the 49ers' roster, per the Bay Area News Group.

Okoye, a former British Olympics discus thrower and rugby player, is feeling confident about his improvements and feels like his potential is worth a roster spot.

“It’s very different from the first time I came here. I’m feeling very good about things,” Okoye said Thursday while sitting at his locker. “I’m just happy I was given the opportunity to stay here so long, so I could catch up. I have a good opportunity to show what I can do.”

Okoye has worked under new head coach Jim Tomsula for two years and with Justin Smith's retirement, his emergence might be rewarded.

“You’re going to get lots of people telling you things. But the main thing is to just keep yourself motivated, despite what people say about you," Okoye said. "People will write you off. People will say this or that. Just keep yourself motivated, keep going every day and you’ll be good.”

Bradley Pinion
News
The 49ers have signed the following draft picks to four-year contracts: Jaquiski Tartt , Eli Harold, Blake Bell, Mike Davis, DeAndre Smelter, Bradley Pinion, Ian Silberman, Trenton Brown and Busta Anderson, the team announced on Monday.

Tartt was selected in the second round out of Samford, where he amassed 277 tackles with six interceptions in his college career. Davis was selected in the fourth round and rushed for 2,440 yards and 22 touchdowns on 454 carries in his college career.

Jerome Simpson
News
The 49ers announced they've signed veteran receiver Jerome Simpson to a two-year deal on Thursday.

Simpson, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, was a former second-round draft selection by the Bengals in 2008. He was last with the Vikings and totaled a single-season best 726 receiving yards in 2013.

He didn't play in 2014 after the Vikings cut him following a three-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

Chris Martin
News
The Patriots re-signed offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann to their practice squad and released offensive lineman Chris Martin from the squad, the team announced.
Jarryd Hayne
News
49ers rookie Jarryd Hayne has impressed coach Jim Tomsula with his work ethic, as the former rugby star learns a new sport.

"That’s like the man in Australia," Tomsula said, per 49ers.com. "He gives that up to come here and do this. He’s starting at the bottom of the totem pole, that says a lot to me."

The 49ers haven't started practicing in pads yet, which has helped Hayne.

"He’s still playing rugby," Tomsula said. "There are no pads here. He’s fielding balls and running around in shorts and a t-shirt."

News
The 49ers will have wideout Michael Crabtree Week 17 against the Cardinals.

Bruce Ellington, who came into the game listed as questionable due to a hamstring injury, will give it a go. He's the only player listed as questionable who will attempt to play through his injury.

Anquan Boldin
News
Six players were absent from the 49ers' OTA practice on Thursday, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Those not present were wide receiver Anquan Boldin, fullback Bruce Miller, offensive linemen Alex Boone and Anthony Davis, punter Andy Lee and kicker Phil Dawson.

OTA practices are voluntary and players are not required to attend.

Linebacker NaVorro Bowman was also not present though he was given the day off by 49ers coach Jim Tomsula. Bowman missed the 2014 season after sustaining an ACL tear during the 2013 playoffs.

Leon McFadden

Joe Staley
News
The 49ers will have wideout Michael Crabtree Week 14 against the Raiders.

Crabtree came into the game listed as probable due to a knee injury. He was never really a threat to miss the contest.

The team will have most of their probable players for the game. Chris Culliver, Bruce Ellington, Carlos Hyde, Stevie Johnson, Ray McDonald, Justin Smith and Joe Staley are all listed as active. All seven were considered probable.

Nick Moody
News
49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman did not play last season after suffering a devastating knee injury in the NFC Championship Game following the 2013 season. “We’re very confident with where he’s at with his recovery," general manager Trent Baalke told CSN Bay Area.

Baalke expects Bowman and Michael Wilhoite to be the team's starting inside linebackers this season, with Nick Moody a key contributor.

Phillip Tanner
News
49ers running back Frank Gore returned to practice Thursday wearing a non-contact jersey as he continues to progress through the league's concussion protocol, reports the Sacramento Bee. Rookie running back Carlos Hyde remained sidelined with ankle and back injuries.

The 49ers host the Chargers on Saturday night. If Gore gets cleared by an independent neurologist and Hyde sits out, Gore could see a heavy workload. If neither plays, the 49ers' top two tailbacks would be Alfonso Smith and newly-signed Phillip Tanner.

Vance McDonald
News
The 49ers announced tight end Vance McDonald has been placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

McDonald is dealing with a back injury. In eight games, he produced two catches for 30 yards.

The 49ers used the extra roster spot to activate linebacker NaVorro Bowman.

Kendall Hunter
News
From 2006 through last year, there was no question about who would assume the featured back role for the 49ers.

It was Frank Gore. Period.

Times have changed. Gore has moved on to Indianapolis. Second-year back Carlos Hyde is his heir apparent, but the job will not be handed to him on a silver platter. The team added Reggie Bush in free agency, drafted Mike Davis in the fourth round and still has Kendall Hunter.

The latter is intriguing. He sat out 2014 with a torn ACL, but rushed for more yards in each of his first three seasons than the 333 Hyde recorded last year. And Hunter is fully recovered.

"He's coming along great," Jim Tomsula told CSNBayArea.com. "I think we all have strong feelings for Kendall. You see him out there moving. He's moving around great. But we definitely have a rep count on him. ... You've got to keep him corralled. But he's moving around really quick."

Hunter has 1,202 yards (4.6 average) and seven touchdowns in 43 career games.

Tomsula believes the 49ers are covered at running back no matter who emerges to earn the bulk of the work.

"I'm not talking depth charts or anything right now, but they're all getting after it."

All except Hyde, who has been sidelined for a couple weeks with a minor pull in his leg (not his hamstring). Tomsula said if it were the regular season, he would be active.

Phil Dawson

Corey Lemonier
News
The 49ers DST forced four turnovers for a second straight week and posted its third consecutive dominant performance in the Week 6 win over Arizona. San Francisco's defense also scored for the second straight week, this time on a safety by rookie linebacker Corey Lemonier.

Safety Eric Reid had an interception and a fumble recovery. Corner Carlos Rogers picked off Carson Palmer, too, and linebacker NaVorro Bowman recovered a fumble.

San Francisco gave up 403 total yards and allowed 5.2 yards per carry, but compensated with a slew of big plays. The 49ers DST has a good chance to stay  hot in Week 7 at Tennessee.

Carlos Hyde
News
49ers second-year running back Carlos Hyde was forced to watch Thursday's OTA practice from the sidelines, according to the San Jose Mercury News

Hyde is dealing with a leg injury that isn't considered serious.

Rookie running back Mike Davis did practice despite injuring his thumb on Wednesday after catching a pass from Colin Kaepernick.

“Kap, man, I didn’t know he could throw a ball that fast,” Davis said. “I still caught it.”

Tony Jerod-Eddie
News
The 49ers signed defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie to a one-year exclusive rights tender Tuesday, the team announced.

During the 2014 season, Jerod-Eddie played in 16 games and totaled 20 tackles.

Dorsey had previously been ruled out for the game, while McDonald, Brock and Ellington were all listed as questionable on the team's final injury report.

Trey Millard
News

The team cut ties with kick returner Trindon Holliday, wide receiver Lance Lewis and guard Fouimalo Fonoti

Holliday was waived in Week 9 from the Buccaneers to promote Marcus Thigpen.

Marcus Cromartie
News

The defensive lineman from Oregon was the 17th overall pick in the draft. With his signing, San Francisco has all of its draft picks under contract.

Shayne Skov
News

Erik Pears
News
The 49ers and offensive lineman Erik Pears have reached an agreement on a two-year deal, a source told Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910AM in Arizona. Pears, 32, was with the Bills since 2010, starting in 56 of 57 games played in. He also showed versatility, lining up at right tackle and right guard during his stint with the Bills.
Dontae Johnson
News
Antoine Bethea is set to start for the 49ers this season at strong safety with Eric Reid entrenched at free safety. But the former doesn't know who their secondary mates will be and he's expecting quite a battle.

The team has no rookies at that position, but 2014 draftees Dontae Johnson, Kenneth Acker and Keith Reaser could be factors. Bethea says the competition has already begun.

"We've had a short minicamp and everybody's learning, so there are really no position, but when training camp comes, there's going to be a lot of competition, a lot of good competition," he told NFL.com. I'm excited to see it."

Torrey Smith
News
The 49ers officially announced the signing of free agent wide receiver Torrey Smith on Wednesday, according to the team's official website.

In his four seasons with the Ravens, Smith caught 213 passes for 3,591 yards and 30 touchdowns. The 26-year-old logged one 1,000-yard plus season in 2013. He recorded a single-season best 11 touchdowns in 2014.

Nick Bellore
News
The 49ers announced on Friday that they have signed linebacker Nick Bellore to a two-year contract.

Bellore spent the previous four years with the Jets, where he totaled 61 tackles. He's yet to start a game in his four-year career. Bellore played college football at Central Michigan.

Desmond Bishop
News
The 49ers will sign inside linebacker Desmond Bishop, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Bishop joined the 49ers last December and recorded two tackles in two games. He emerged as a starter with the Packers in 2010 and racked up more than 100 tackles for two straight seasons before missing the 2012 season and becoming a free agent. He could win significant playing time in the 49ers' base set after the retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.

Aldon Smith
News
49ers rookie defensive end Eli Harold is eager to learn from coach Charles Haley, even when he's not the one being coached. Harold spent part of Friday's practice eavesdropping when Haley was giving tips to linebacker Aldon Smith

"That’s a Hall of Famer," Harold said, per ESPN. "And I feel that Aldon has all the intangibles to be a future Hall of Famer. I’m just trying to learn everything I can and just picking up little key words that he was saying. ... Things I’ve never seen or heard,” Harold said. “I feel like it will definitely help me in the future. Definitely advanced things. He was talking balance and target. Where to keep you eyes and head level. Things like that."

Was the statistical slide experienced by one-time 49ers standout tight end Vernon Davis in 2014 a one-year wonder or downward trend? Davis is working to increase the chance that it is the former.
