Tampa Bay kick returner Clifton Smith will miss the rest of the season after his second concussion in less than two months. The second-year pro was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, two days after he was hurt making a tackle on the opening kickoff of Sunday's 16-6 loss at Carolina. His first concussion happened during an Oct. 18 game against the Panthers, when he was hit trying to make a fair catch on a punt. Smith was a Pro Bowl kick returner as a rookie. He's second in the NFL in kickoff return average and 10th in punt return average this season. The Bucs promoted running back Kareem Huggins from the practice squad to fill the roster opening.

The Buccaneers held out RB Derrick Ward for their Week 17 game against Atlanta. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report with knee and thigh injuries.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed receiver Maurice Stovall on injured reserve and promoted receivers Brian Clark and Chad Lucas from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday. Stovall, a second-year pro who had 10 receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown this season, broke his right arm during last Sunday's 21-19 loss at San Francisco. The Bucs released tight end Keith Heinrich from the active roster, then signed Heinrich and receiver Julius McClellan to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans released veteran linebacker Rosevelt Colvin and 20 other players Friday, the day before NFL teams must set their 53-man rosters. Also released Friday was veteran safety Glenn Earl, who started 15 games in 2006 but missed all of last season with a fractured foot, and defensive tackle Anthony Maddox, who spent the last two seasons with the team. Other players released were fullback Jon Abbate, quarterbacks Shane Boyd and Alex Brink, linebackers Kevis Coley and Ben Moffitt, center Greg Eslinger, cornerbacks Jamar Fletcher, Derrick Roberson and Dexter Wynn, receivers Darnell Jenkins, LeRon McCoy and Mark Simmons, tight end Ryan Krause, defensive linemen Gabe Long and Jesse Nading, running back Marcel Shipp and tackle Torrin Tucker.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed linebacker Angelo Crowell on injured reserve. A torn biceps ended Crowell's season during last weekend's 24-23 preseason victory at Jacksonville. He signed with the Bucs as a free agent in March after spending six seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Among the cuts were RB Chad Simpson, WRs Devin Aromashodu, Onrea Jones and Sam Giguere, DLs Joe Bradley, Jeff Charleston, Dan Davis, Colin Ferrell and Ben Ishola, DBs Brannon Condren and Brandon Foster, TE Tyrice Thompson and LBs Victor Worsley and Kyle Shotwell.

Bucs DB E.J. Biggers (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 2 at Buffalo. Biggers, who did not practice all week, also missed Week 1 against the Cowboys.

High-priced defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is among six players cut by the Denver Broncos. Robertson, acquired last offseason from the New York Jets, was set to count $16 million against the team's $123 million cap. The Arizona Cardinals announced on Saturday that the team has released K Mike Nugent and signed Jason Banks, a defensive end, from the practice squad.

The Raiders placed TE Ben Troupe on injured reserve with a foot injury Wednesday and signed LB Robert Thomas to take his spot on the roster.

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris said Monday that it will be a priority this offseason for QB Josh Freeman to continue developing so that he'll be more prepared to start in 2010. The team also plans to use the draft to surround the 21-year-old quarterback with promising young talent. The Bucs will have five of the first 99 selections, including No. 3 overall. "You've got to say No. 5's the biggest priority, making sure everything works around him, because when it worked around him, we were able to be successful," Morris said, referring to Freeman's jersey number.

Tampa Bay WR Michael Spurlock returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter of the Week 16 win over the Saints. Spurlock's touchdown tied the score and helped send the game into overtime where the Bucs eventually won with a field goal. Spurlock did not touch the ball offensively in the game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Tuesday that they have placed FB Byron Storer on the Injured Reserve list with a knee injury. Storer, who was injured during the Buccaneers first OTA last week, has played his first two seasons with Tampa Bay after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2007. The Buccaneers announced Tuesday that they have signed CB Marcus McCauley and placed FB B.J. Askew on the Non-Football Injury List, ending his 2009 season. The team also announced that it has released CB Derrick Roberson from the active roster and re-signed him to the practice squad. Askew played in the first five games this season for the Buccaneers, starting two while Roberson was inactive last week against Carolina.

Another new option for playing time in Dallas is fullback Zack Crockett, who was claimed off waivers from the Bucs Wednesday. He practiced Thursday with the Cowboys and said he's ready to go -- on offense, special teams or anywhere else -- Week 16 against the Panthers. "I'm cramming, learning the system as fast as I possibly can learn it," he said. "I'll be ready if my number is called." Crockett was let go by Tampa Bay, which used him in only one game this season. This is the first season since 1999 he hasn't been a weekly fixture. All those were with Oakland; he started nine games last year.

He started both games this season, totaling 11 tackles. Cargile resigned with the Buccaneers on September 19 after being released on September 5. He appeared on special teams at Buffalo.
