Panthers OT Jonathan Martin excited about new opportunity
"I'm excited to be a part of a team that's had a lot of success recently," Martin said. "I know a little bit about coach Ron Rivera and (offensive line) coach (John) Matsko and I'm excited about working with them and being successful here."
Martin, a former second-round draft choice of the Dolphins, was surprised by the fact that he only spent one year with the 49ers.
"It was a little surprising not being in San Francisco for another year, but that's the nature of the business," Martin said. "I'm glad I got another opportunity. I'm excited to be a part of this group."
Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman likes the experience that Martin brings to the team.
"Our goal is to build the strongest roster possible and add competition at every position,"Gettleman said. "Jonathan brings quality experience to our offensive line, having started 32 games in his career at both tackle spots."
Martin wants to become a better player, and he appreciates the opportunity given to him by the Panthers.
"At this point it is firmly in the past," Martin said. "I want to have a successful career playing football. I'm lucky to have gotten an opportunity here in Carolina."
Report: LB Philip Wheeler to visit 49ers
Wheeler was released by the Dolphins earlier this month, saving the team $3 million in cap space.
In seven seasons with the Colts, Raiders and Dolphins, the 30-year-old has recorded 493 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed and four forced fumbles.
Patriots' Chandler Jones denies that he's on crutches after surgery
Jones battled a hip problem last season and was reportedly rehabbing at Gillette Stadium after getting the injury surgically repaired.
Jones responded by posting a video on Instagram showing him walking without the aid of crutches and the message, "Don't believe everything you read."
Redskins' Gruden content with right guard spot
“Right now I see them both on our roster and I see two good right guards, I really do,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “I feel good about that spot.”
Gruden had high praise for Long, who the Redskins drafted in the third round of the 2014 draft.
“We expect Spencer to have an excellent offseason, come in in better shape,” Gruden said. “When you go from your rookie year to your second year, that’s usually the biggest jump you have to make as a player. It probably goes the same with head coaching, too. It’s a big jump. You get your feet wet, you understand what’s asked of you, how important it is to be a pro, what type of preparation. All the things that go into being a professional you learn as a rookie and then in the second year you feel more comfortable.”
Long had an adjustment period when learning to block in the team's outside zone scheme. Although he only saw 16 snaps last season, he wants to contribute to the team in any way possible.
“Obviously you want to play as much as you can,” Long said. “But I’ll do what this team asks me to do. If that’s playing a backup role, so be it. I’m trying to get to that starting spot but who isn’t? As far as this year, I learned a lot and grew a lot as a rookie. I’ve got a better feel for it.”
Report: Ravens interested in Gophers RB David Cobb
The team met with Cobb at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine, and he would be a likely third-round choice for the Ravens in this year's NFL Draft.
Titans to meet with Jameis Winston on Tuesday
The team plans to send general manager Ruston Webster, coach Ken Whisenhunt, and several offensive assistant coaches and scouts to Winston's pro day in Tallahassee, per the Tennesseean.
The team will also hold a private workout with Winston. The Titans have the second overall pick in the NFL Draft. Winston and Oregon's Marcus Mariota are the top two quarterback prospects available.
"I obviously have a little more information with Mariota than Winston -- we just had 15 minutes with him at the combine. But both of our initial meetings with the players went well, went very well. They were both impressive,'' Whisenhunt said. "The next process is the individual workout with them. As far as what Mariota did, he did a really good job. Obviously he is a sharp young man and we'll get one last opportunity with him when he comes to our place where we really get a chance to give him some of our information and see how he can process that. We'll get a chance to do the same thing with Winston and get him into our building, too."
