News: T.J. Galiardi (back) will play Thursday against the Hurricanes, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 the FAN reports. Analysis: Back issues have sidelined T.J. Galiardi for the past three weeks, but coach Bob Hartley said the 25-year-old will slide back into the lineup Thursday, possibly in place of Curtis Glencross. The Flames will have to officially activate Galiardi prior to the game.
News: Henrik Zetterberg (back) was placed on long-term IR on Wednesday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. Analysis: The herniated disc in Henrik Zetterberg's back was initially expected to keep the 33-year-old out only two weeks or so, but he'll end up missing most, if not all, of December as a result. Even with a backdated IR stint, Zetterberg will not be eligible to return until Dec. 28. Petr Mrazek was recalled to take Zetterberg's spot on the active roster, after Jimmy Howard suffered a minor injury in Wednesday's practice.
News: Karri Ramo will start in goal Thursday against the Hurricanes. Analysis: Karri Ramo will step in between the pipes following two straight starts by Reto Berra, who allowed just three goals on 55 shots in those two outings. In five home games (four starts) to this point, Ramo has posted a 2.68 GAA and a .900 save percentage.
News: Jimmy Howard left Wednesday's practice early with an undisclosed injury, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports. Analysis: The team is downplaying the severity of the injury, saying that Jimmy Howard is just banged up, but they did recall goalie Petr Mrazek to back up Jonas Gustavsson on Thursday. So long as the injury is indeed minor, it seems likely Howard will be back for one of the team's back-to-back games this weekend.
News: Ryan Smyth (neck) did not practice Wednesday. Analysis: Ryan Smyth missed Tuesday's game with neck soreness, but coach Dallas Eakins said the injury is not serious. The team is likely hoping the additional day of rest Wednesday will be sufficient to get him back on the ice Thursday.
News: Joe Pavelski scored on one of five shots in Tuesday's OT loss to the Islanders. Analysis: Joe Pavelski's move to the Logan Couture line, along with Patrick Marleau, has been good for everyone on the line, including a slumping Couture. The three of them combined for 18 shots in Tuesday's loss. If these lines stick, expect to see an uptick in production from Pavelski, who is already having a great year with 28 points in 31 games.
News: Corey Potter missed practice Wednesday due to neck soreness. Analysis: The ailment sounds relatively minor, as coach Dallas Eakins indicated Corey Potter's absence was more for maintenance purposes. It doesn't sound like Potter is in any real danger of missing Thursday's game against Boston.
News: Kevin Poulin saved 46 of 48 shots, then stopped three of four shootout attempts in Tuesday's 3-2 win over San Jose. Analysis: Quite the outing for Kevin Poulin, and against a high-powered offense, too. He's been solid twice in a row now on the Isles' West Coast swing, so look for Poulin to get a shot at the Coyotes on Thursday.
