News: Cody Eakin scored a goal for the second consecutive game in Thursday's win over the Coyotes. Analysis: After a nine-game scoring skid, Cody Eakin's found his offensive game again, but that's come along with mighty struggles in faceoffs -- he's won just 15 of 44 over the last two games. Still, most fantasy formats are more concerned with the points, and Eakin should put up enough of those to be viable in deep formats.
News: Ales Hemsky handed out a pair of assists in Thursday's win over Arizona. Analysis: While it's nice to see that the veteran winger now has three helpers in his last three games, he only owns four assists for the season and has yet to score a goal. Fantasy owners in most leagues can probably do better than the injury-prone Ales Hemsky.
News: Mike Smith took his fifth consecutive loss Thursday, giving up three goals on 27 shots against the Stars. Analysis: Two days after posting a respectable performance in an overtime loss to Washington, Mike Smith got back to putting up unpleasant stat lines. At this point, Devan Dubnyk -- who's easily outplayed Smith, especially lately -- has to be getting serious consideration for some extended run in goal.
News: Kari Lehtonen tightened up his game Thursday, stopping 26 of 27 in a 3-1 win over the Coyotes. Analysis: Coming on the heels of two consecutive miserable starts in which he gave up 10 goals in less than five periods of play, this is a huge bounce-back effort for Kari Lehtonen. He's been well below his usual standards this year, but it doesn't help that he's been facing a ton of rubber -- more than 30 shots per game.
News: Alex Tanguay suffered a jaw injury during Thursday's loss to Washington and had to leave the contest, the Canadian Press reports. Analysis: The veteran was hit in the face with an Alex Ovechkin shot, which doesn't sound like fun in the least. Coach Patrick Roy later said the team will know more about Alex Tanguay's injury Friday. As for Thursday's game, Tanguay only saw 7:15 of action and logged a minus-1 rating with no points.
News: Brian Lashoff scored his first point of the season Thursday with an assist in a 4-3 victory against the Jets. Analysis: Brian Lashoff has a total of 11 points in 112 career games, so Detroit isn't expecting much out of him on the offensive end. He is a plus-2, however, after putting up a combined minus-12 the past two campaigns.
News: Joffrey Lupul (hand) practiced again Friday but isn't expected to make his return to action Saturday against the Red Wings, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports. Analysis: Though Joffrey Lupul was on the ice for the third straight day, he was still practicing in the maroon sweater worn by the team's other injured players. That would seem to indicate that Lupul isn't being viewed as a lineup option for the Detroit game, but with the Leafs off the schedule after that until next Wednesday, he should be ready to go by that time.
News: Danny DeKeyser picked up an assist for the third straight game Thursday, contributing to a 4-3 victory over Winnipeg. Analysis: After registering only four points in his first sixteen games, Danny DeKeyser has nearly doubled his output in the last three contests. DeKeyser hasn't shown a ton of offensive upside in the NHL, but is still on pace for about 30 points on the season.
News: Matt Cooke (hip flexor) hopes to begin skating next week, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Analysis: He's missed ten games with the injury, but is traveling with the team on a current three-game road trip.
News: Mikko Koivu (illness) missed Friday's practice, Chad Graff of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Analysis: Mikko Koivu was feeling ill toward the end of Thursday's win over the Flyers, so the team is likely just giving him some rest with the hope that he'll be good to go in time for Saturday's game against the Lightning. The team should have an update on his condition following their morning skate Saturday.
