Analysis: After putting up 24 points in a shortened campaign last season, Dan Hamhuis has only collected eights points in 31 games this season. He is still averaging 22:56 of ice time per game, but has transitioned back into more of a defensive role with the team. Hamhuis has struggled overall this season though and is on pace to post his worst plus-minus rating in three years.
News: Ryan Kesler scored the game-winning goal and was a plus-3 in a win over the Avalanche on Sunday. Analysis: Kesler has been red hot as of late and now has five goals over his past four games. He now has 15 goals and 23 points in 32 games on the year. This is the Ryan Kesler fantasy hockey owners wanted to see this season. Keep rolling him.
News: Chris Higgins picked up a pair of assists and was a plus-3 in a win over Colorado on Sunday. Analysis: He now has points in consecutive games and is proving to be a very consistent fantasy option. Chris Higgins now has eight goals and 15 points in 31 games this season. He will continue to put up points playing on the second line with Ryan Kesler. He isn't spectacular, but at least you know what you are getting with him.
News: James Neal received a five-game suspension for kneeing Boston's Brad Marchand in the head during Saturday's game, Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Analysis: A suspension was all but guaranteed, as James Neal unquestionably made a dirty play in a game that turned ugly. Five games is the maximum allowable suspension for a phone hearing, but looking at the other punishments handed out this season, you could argue that Neal deserved more. His absence will temporarily remove some scoring punch from a team with plenty to spare. Evgeni Malkin (undisclosed) is likely headed for a Monday return just as Neal is slated to miss the next week-and-a-half of action.
News: Logan Couture had an assist and five shots in a loss to Minnesota on Sunday. Analysis: Even when the Sharks struggle, Logan Couture is making waves. He has had at least four shots in four of the last six games.
News: Sean Monahan (foot) skated at Monday's practice, Sportsnet's Roger Millions reports. Analysis: Sean Monahan has been on injured reserve since Nov. 28 due to a hairline fracture in his foot. While there's no indication that he'll be ready for Tuesday's game, the talented 19-year-old is at least making progress. Monahan has 15 points through 24 appearances as a rookie, establishing him value as an elite commodity in dynasty leagues.
News: Matt Nieto didn't produce any offense on Sunday in Minnesota, but it wasn't for lack of trying. He notched six shots in 11:36 on ice. Analysis: Matt Nieto was all over the ice in his limited playing time. He's probably not worth a pickup yet, but this is maybe a sign that he'll return to the form he was in at the beginning of the season. It's worth keeping an eye on.
News: Simon Despres has two points, including a power-play assist, in his last two games for Pittsburgh. Analysis: He has only seen a smidgeon of power-play time, but that could change if he continues to play well. Coach Dan Byslma noted his strong play during a media scrum Monday. Simon Despres has four PIM, 11 hits, nine blocks and the aforementioned two points in six games.
News: Matt Irwin assisted on the lone goal in Sunday's loss to Minnesota. Analysis: Matt Irwin has not been an offensive powerhouse this year, tallying only four assists and no goals through 18 games. However, the bright spot for owners was that he was saw 3:46 on the power play. Unfortunately that proved meaningless for the night as San Jose failed to capitalize on any of their four power play opportunities.
