Jonathan Bernier
Leafs' Bernier: Competition Looming For Top Role?
Jonathan Bernier, G, TOR
10:01 AM
News: Jonathan Bernier (sports hernia) may face competition from James Reimer for the starter's job in training camp, according to Toronto's Sportsnet590 TheFAN. James Reimer says he was told there was a "definite opportunity" for him to win back the starter's gig.
Analysis: Maybe it's semantics and maybe it's a ploy to get Reimer re-signed. Who knows? Jonathan Bernier clearly won the starter's gig last year, but he did suffer an injury that put him on the sidelines for a period of time. Camp should be interesting, although our money is on Bernier.

James Reimer
Leafs' Reimer:
James Reimer, G, TOR
9:57 AM
News: James Reimer was happy to re-sign in Toronto after being told during negotiations that there was a "definite opportunity" to regain his starting role, according to Toronto's Sportsnet590 The FAN.
Analysis: Optimus Reims told the station on Monday morning that management will give him a chance to win the starter's job. This comes as a surprise to us, especially given how Jonathan Bernier performed last season. Perhaps this comes down to semantics and the exact definition of opportunity. His contract is still tradeable, although the Buds don't have much of a backup plan in place to replace him. Stay tuned.

Martin St. Pierre
Free Agent St. Pierre Heading To KHL
Martin St. Pierre, C, MON
5:09 AM
News: Martin St. Pierre signed with Medvescak of the KHL, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: Martin St. Pierre was the captain of the Hamitlon Bulldogs in the American Hockey League last season. He scored a team-high 38 points.

Derick Brassard
Rangers Sign Brassard
Derick Brassard, C, NYR
12:39 AM
News: The Rangers re-signed Derick Brassard to a five-year, $25 million contract extension Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Derick Brassard filed for salary arbitration with the Rangers earlier in July, but the two sides were able to agree to terms on a new deal without an official hearing. The center racked up 18 goals and 27 assists in 81 games last season, and will be counted on to help fill the hole left after the departure of Brad Richards.

Ben Bishop
Bolts' Bishop (Wrist) On Track For Training Camp
Ben Bishop, G, TB
7/27/2014
News: Ben Bishop (wrist) "seems on track" for training camp, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. Bishop underwent surgery on his right wrist at the end of April.
Analysis: The Vezina candidate will be the Bolts' go-to guy once again in 2014-15 and will be motivated to prove that last season's breakout wasn't a fluke. Draft with confidence.

Luke Adam
Adam Returns To Sabres
Luke Adam, C, BUF
7/27/2014
News: Luke Adam, who was given a qualifying offer by Buffalo in June, re-signed with the team Sunday on a one-year contract.
Analysis: A second-round pick in a pretty loaded 2008 draft class, Luke Adam has been one of the Sabres' most perplexing prospects. The 24-year-old can be a feared power forward when he is performing well, but those times can be quite rare. Adam had a good season for the Amerks but did little in 12 games with the Sabres (one goal, 16 shots). The Sabres are going to give Adam another year to prove himself, and on a team loaded with prospects, a poor performance could mean a change of scenery.

P.K. Subban
Habs' Subban Mum On Contract Negotiations
P.K. Subban, D, MON
7/26/2014
News: P.K. Subban, who is scheduled to go to salary arbitration Friday, is keeping quiet about salary negotiations with the Canadiens, reports TSN.ca. "I'll answer one question about the negotiation: It's been kept pretty quiet the whole time and it's going to remain that way until a deal's done," he told reporters on Saturday.
Analysis: It's so quiet that no one seems to know if he wants a short- or long-term deal. But it could be one of the biggest in the league once it's inked -- the salary cap is going to rise next year and the next, and he's a recent Norris trophy winner.

Cory Sarich
UFA Sarich (Broken Back) Should Make Full Recovery
Cory Sarich, D, COL
7/26/2014
News: Cory Sarich (broken back) "will most likely make a full recovery," according to a tweet from the defenseman. He suffered five broken vertebrae and severe road rash after being struck by a motor vehicle as he cycled in Invermere, B.C.
Analysis: He did not need surgery and isn't wearing a brace. Talk about lucky. He is an unrestricted free agent; this would be a horrible way for his career to end.

Brett Bellemore
Hurricanes Sign Bellemore To One-Year Deal
Brett Bellemore, D, CAR
7/25/2014
News: Brett Bellemore agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Hurricanes on Friday, the Hurricanes' Official Site reports.
Analysis: Brett Bellemore played in 64 games for the Hurricanes last season as it was the first time that he spent the entire year in the NHL. He has been able to contribute two goals and eight assists over the stretch of his two-year tenure with Carolina. The defenseman stands to improve on those numbers since he's slowly but surely gaining professional experience.

Landon Ferraro
Red Wings Ink Ferraro To One-Year Deal
Landon Ferraro, C, DET
7/25/2014
News: Landon Ferraro signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings on Friday.
Analysis: Landon Ferraro inked a two-way contract, meaning he can be assigned to AHL Grand Rapids at will by the Red Wings. He played just four games for Detroit in 2013-14, with the majority of his time coming with Grand Rapids. In the minors, Ferraro was responsible for 31 points (15 goals) over 70 games.
