News: Dustin Tokarski was called to the crease early in the second period of Montreal's contest at San Jose on Saturday, with the visitors down 2-0. He allowed two more goals on 22 shots (.909) as the Sharks blanked the Habs, 4-0. Analysis: He doesn't yet have the credentials to be a No. 1 starter at this level, but with Carey Price still banged up and Peter Budaj struggling, Dustin Tokarski might get another start or two before he gets shipped back to the AHL.
News: Peter Budaj was pulled from the crease early in the second period after allowing two goals in the first 11 shots he faced Saturday against San Jose. Analysis: Two tallies in just over 20 minutes isn't a mortal sin, but the first of those was uber-soft, resulting from Peter Budaj's mishandling a puck during a Montreal power play. Whenever Carey Price can return, Budaj will get a one-way ticket to the end of the bench.
News: Antti Niemi turned aside 27 shots Saturday night to claim his third shutout of the season, a 4-0 win over Montreal. Analysis: This wil be a huge confidence-booster for him, and will suppress the likelihood that Alex Stalock might seize the starting netminder's job.
News: Matt Nieto collected a goal and an assist Saturday as the Sharks blanked Montreal, 4-0. Analysis: He still hasn't proven himself as a consistent scorer -- note his eight weeks without a point in November and December -- but he's showing signs of developing his offense at the tender age of 21. As we've noted here previously, his fantasy value will depend largely on his line assignments.
News: Logan Couture bagged a goal, two assists, and a plus-3 rating in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Canadiens. Analysis: While he's endured a dip in his shooting percentage (a career-low 9.9% this season), he continues to generate consistent offense. As long as he stays healthy, you should have him in the lineup.
News: Tommy Wingels scored twice, including once on a San Jose penalty kill, to earn first-star honors in Saturday's 4-0 whipping of Montreal. Analysis: His first-period shortie resulted from Montreal goalie Peter Budaj's misplaying the puck, but credit Tommy Wingels for hustle on the play. Wingels isn't among the Sharks' marquee skaters, but he's quietly put together a breakout season (14-20-34 in 60 games) at age 25.
News: Andy Miele was recalled from AHL Portland on Sunday. Analysis: Andy Miele, 25, has put up impressive numbers with Portland this season (23 points, 35 assists and 60 penalty minutes in 56 games), but it seems he was recalled merely as insurance in case Martin Hanzal (lower body) remains out for Monday's game. If Miele stick around, however, he could be an intriguing target.
News: Radim Vrbata picked up his eighteenth goal of the season on the power play Saturday in a loss to Washington. He was minus-1 on the night. Analysis: This goal follows on the heels of picking up two versus Montreal in the Coyotes' last game. Radim Vrbata had four points in six games since the league returned from the Olympic break.
News: Mike Smith stopped 30 of 33 shots he faced Saturday in a loss to the Capitals. Analysis: This was just the second time in nine starts dating back to February 1 that Mike Smith allowed more than two goals. He will look to get back on a winning track Monday against Tampa Bay.
News: Ray Emery (groin) is doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Devils, Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Analysis: The groin injury appears likely to keep Ray Emery out for a fifth straight game, and if coach Craig Berube decides Steve Mason needs a rest, 25-year-old Cal Heeter could make his NHL debut.
