Player News
Semyon Varlamov
Avs' Varlamov Picks Up Game 1 Win
Semyon Varlamov, G, COL
10:57 AM
News: Semyon Varlamov wasn't at his best Thursday, but his 29 saves were enough as the Avs overcame a 4-2 deficit to beat Minnesota in overtime, 5-4.
Analysis: As was the case many times this season, Colorado's offense staged a late-game comeback to steal a win for Varly. The Avs typically give up a ton of shots -- 32.7 per game this season to be exact, trailing only the lowly Oilers in the Western Conference -- so they'll likely need to ride their Vezina-worthy netminder extra hard in the postseason. Expect a lower-scoring affair when the series resumes Saturday at Pepsi Center.

Frederik Andersen
Ducks' Andersen To Start Again Friday
Frederik Andersen, G, ANA
10:55 AM
News: Frederik Andersen will be in goal for Friday's game against the Stars, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Frederik Andersen will get the nod over Jonas Hiller for the second straight game after helping the Ducks to a victory in Wednesday's postseason opener.

R.J. Umberger
Blue Jackets' Umberger (Upper Body) To Return
R.J. Umberger, LW, CLB
10:54 AM
News: R.J. Umberger (upper body) expects to play in Game 2 against Pittsburgh on Saturday, the Blue Jackets' team website reports.
Analysis: R.J. Umberger's injury forced him out of Columbus' final four regular season games, as well as Game 1 of the playoffs; however, reportedly feeling better, Umberger should be back in action Saturday.

Matt Beleskey
Ducks' Beleskey (Lower Body) Doesn't Skate
Matt Beleskey, LW, ANA
10:47 AM
News: Matt Beleskey (lower body) did not participate in Anaheim's Friday morning skate, the Orange County Register reports.
Analysis: Matt Beleskey's Game 2 playing status was thought to hinge on whether he could practice Friday, so he's probably doubtful for the evening contest. If he indeed misses out, expect Devante Smith-Pelly to fill his role.

Matt Bartkowski
Bruins' Bartkowski Iffy For Playoff Opener
Matt Bartkowski, D, BOS
10:37 AM
News: Matt Bartkowski (unspecified reason) did not participate in the Bruins' optional morning skate Friday, csnne.com reports.
Analysis: The report notes that Matt Bartkowski hasn't been seen on the ice since Sunday's season-finale against the Devils, so he's iffy heading into Friday's playoff opener against the Red Wings. It Bartkowski is unable to suit up Friday, look for Andrej Meszaros to fill in on the Bruins' blue line.

Chris Kelly
Bruins' Kelly Dealing With Back Issue
Chris Kelly, C, BOS
10:32 AM
News: Chris Kelly (back) did not participate in the Bruins' optional morning skate Friday, csnne.com reports.
Analysis: Chris Kelly, who has been out since injuring his back on April 8, thus heads into the opening round of the playoffs (which starts for the Bruins on Friday) in the day-to-day category, along with fellow forward Daniel Paille.

Daniel Paille
Bruins' Paille Skates On Friday
Daniel Paille, LW, BOS
10:28 AM
News: Daniel Paille (unspecified injury) skated Friday morning.
Analysis: The report notes that it was Daniel Paille's first time on the ice this week, so consider the speedy winger day-to-day as the Bruins' opening round playoff series against the Red Wings opens on Friday.

Zach Parise
Wild's Parise: Strong Performance In Game 1 Loss
Zach Parise, LW, MIN
9:58 AM
News: Zach Parise had two assists and three shots on goal in Minnesota's overtime loss to Colorado in Game 1 of the teams' playoff matchup Thursday. He skated 23:09 and had 2:31 of power-play time.
Analysis: Zach Parise is probably the Wild's best forward option if your playoff format makes you choose at least one player on each team, though the Wild would appear to be a pretty heavy underdog in this series. The Avs are a bit banged up, however, and Thursday proved the Wild can keep up, which at least gives Parise owners some hope as the series moves on.

Nick Foligno
Blue Jackets' Foligno Still Possible For Saturday
Nick Foligno, LW, CLB
9:52 AM
News: Nick Foligno (knee) could still play in Saturday's game against the Penguins, Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports.
Analysis: Head coach Todd Richards said Thursday that Nick Foligno would not be available Saturday, but he now has a chance to play after taking part in Friday's practice. A final decision on Foligno's status will be made just before the first puck is dropped Saturday.

Ilya Bryzgalov
WIld's Bryzgalov Loses Tight Contest
Ilya Bryzgalov, G, MIN
9:50 AM
News: Ilya Bryzgalov made 26 saves on 31 shot attempts in an overtime loss to Colorado in Game 1 of the teams' playoff matchup Thursday. Paul Stastny beat him at 7:27 of overtime to give the Avs the win.
Analysis: The Wild have some banged-up goalies behind Bryz in Darcy Kuemper and Niklas Backstrom - neither suited up Thursday - who could become a consideration if they get healthier and Ilya Bryzgalov doesn't step up his game to keep the Wild in the series. He's now allowed 13 goals in his last three starts.
