News: Patrick Marleau posted his second consecutive two-point game and third in the last four Thursday, picking up a goal and a power-play assist while going plus-2. Analysis: Patrick Marleau's heated up dramatically over the last five, potting three goals to go with four assists, and four of those points have come on the man advantage. It's been a down year, but maybe the veteran forward is primed for a big second half. It's hard to keep a seven-time 30-goal man down.
News: Barclay Goodrow celebrated his return from a brief AHL stint over the All-Star break with a goal and an assist in a win over the Ducks on Thursday. Analysis: With just nine points to show for 32 games, Barclay Goodrow hasn't been much of a fantasy asset, though at least he's good for some hits and PIM. The points were his first since Jan. 3, with eight scoreless contests in between.
News: Antti Niemi allowed three goals on 28 shots, but came away with a 6-3 win over Anaheim on Thursday. Analysis: You wouldn't think a performance like that would be enough to beat the Ducks, but Anaheim started Ilya Bryzgalov in goal, which gave Antti Niemi plenty of cushion to work with. Still, he could have finished with a much stronger line if not for giving back two goals with a 6-1 lead in the third period.
News: Ilya Bryzgalov was ripped apart for six goals on 25 shotsbefore being pulled from Thursday's loss to the Sharks. Analysis: Sadly, all that happened in less than two periods. Frederik Andersen came in and stopped all eight shots in relief, and he should continue to occupy the net most nights after Bryz's second six-goal implosion in four starts this season.
News: Matt Fraser was a driving force behind the Edmonton offense Thursday, scoring a goal and assisting on the other two in a 3-2 win over Buffalo. Analysis: The Bruins dumped Matt Fraser with a stat line of three goals and no assists in 24 games; he's now matched that goal total and more than doubled the point total in just 12 games as an Oiler, and he even has a plus-3 rating after going, well, plus-3 on Thursday. With five points in his last four games, Fraser merits a look in deep formats.
News: Anton Lander scored the game-winning goal -- his first tally of the year -- and had the primary assists on Edmonton's other two goals in Thursday's 3-2 win over Buffalo. Analysis: He drove the offense in this one, which has to be pretty unexpected from a guy who entered play with 12 points in 105 career games. But he does now have seven points in 12 games this season, which is a fairly respectable stat that should make deep-league fantasy owners take a look at the 23-year-old Swede.
News: Ben Scrivens allowed two goals on 20 shots to come away with a 3-2 win over the Sabres on Thursday. Analysis: Ben Scrivens snapped a personal three-game losing skid in which he'd allowed 11 goals. Of course, Buffalo's the only team worse than the Oilers, as the Sabres have now dropped 13 straight. So this is one of those hollow victories -- but hey, a win's a win.
News: Nick Schultz scored his first goal since the 2012-13 season Thursday, and it held up as the game-winner against Winnipeg. Analysis: That last tally came on April 8, 2013, so Nick Schultz was coming up on a two-year goal-scoring slump. Now he can try for the next step: scoring more than one goal in a season for the first time since 2010-11.
News: Petr Straka netted his first NHL point in his second career game Thursday, picking up the primary assist on Nick Schultz's game-winning goal against Winnipeg. Analysis: Nice to see Petr Straka find his way onto the sheet, but with only 44 points in 99 AHL games, he hasn't shown a whole lot of scoring upside since turning pro.
News: Brayden Schenn scored his 11th goal and contributed a power-play assist Thursday against Winnipeg. Analysis: His scoring remains inconsistent, but he does have these little outbursts from time to time, and Brayden Schenn remains on track to break 50 points for the first time in his career. Still, he has the talent to do bigger things, so we'd like to see more.
