News: Derek Stepan has two goals and nine assists in nine games since the NHL returned to action from the Olympic break. Analysis: After being snubbed for playing time with Team USA, the 23-year-old clearly returned from the Sochi games with a chip on his shoulder. Despite the inconsistencies of his line-mates Rick Nash and Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan (12 goals, 34 assists) has points in eight of the team's nine games since the NHL returned to action. In addition to approaching his career-high of points (51) Stepan's next assist will set a new career-high for helpers in a season.
News: Jim Slater is day-to-day with a lower-body injury, Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun reports. Analysis: Jim Slater was banged up during Saturday's game against the Rangers and looks like he could be out for a couple of days. Consider him day-to-day and expect the Jets to update his condition shortly.
News: Thornburn is out indefinitely with a fractured talus, according to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun. The Jets will likely update his condition soon.
News: Martin St. Louis has 11 career goals and four assists in 19 career games against San Jose. Analysis: More known for dishing out helpers against most teams, it's somewhat surprising to see Martin St. Louis with such a contrast goals-to-assists ratio against the Sharks. Perhaps this is a good sign for the 38-year-old who has just two assists in six games for the Blueshirts since being acquired at the trade deadline.
News: Benoit Pouliot has two assists, six shots on goal and two penalty minutes in his last three games. Analysis: After enduring a five-game pointless drought, the third-line winger is back on the board. While Benoit Pouliot has been productive at times this season, and is technically nearing career-highs in goals, assists and points, he can only provide value for fantasy owners in the deepest of leagues and even then is a questionable addition.
News: Daniel Paille saw 11:54 worth of ice time in his return to action Saturday against the Hurricanes after missing two games due to a concussion, the Boston Globe reports. Analysis: Daniel Paille, who rejoined the Bruins' fourth line Saturday, has a modest total of 16 points in 58 games to date, but his speed and penalty-killing ability remain assets to the Bruins.
News: Shawn Thornton was a healthy scratch Saturday against the Hurricanes, the Boston Globe reports. Analysis: Matt Lindblad, who took Shawn Thornton's place on the Bruins' fourth line Saturday, was sent back to AHL Providence afterward, which paves the way for Thornton to re-enter the B's lineup Monday against the Wild. With just six points in 49 games though, the rugged Thornton's fantasy utility is limited to formats where his (63) PIMs are helpful.
News: Justin Faulk (upper body) was back in the lineup for Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Bruins after missing the previous five games. He saw 20:36 of ice time and 27 shifts, but failed to register a point. Analysis: Justin Faulk was back on the Canes' first defensive pairing with Andrej Sekera, but surprisingly did not see time on the first power-play unit as he normally does. Regardless, he should be fine to activate for fantasy purposes going forward.
News: Steve Mason will be in net for the Flyers when they face the Penguins again on Sunday, Tom Panaccio of CSN Philly reports. He is 27-16-6 with a 2.56 GAA and .915 save percentage.
News: Ben Scrivens will be between the pipes for the Oilers when they face the Hurricanes on Sunday, according to head coach Dallas Eakins. Analysis: Ben Scrivens gave up six goals in a loss to the Blues on Tuesday, but comes back again for Sunday's action. He is 12-11-4 with a 2.24 GAA and .930 save percentage this season.
