Wings' Mantha Suffers Injury At Prospects Tourney

News: Anthony Mantha suffered an undisclosed injury during the NHL's tournament for prospects and will not be available for the Red Wings' finale against the Hurricanes, MLive.com's Brendan Savage reports.
Analysis: Red Wings GM Ken Holland didn't offer any specifics on the nature of the injury other than saying Anthony Mantha was "banged up," but it appears he'll still be ready to return to the ice when training camp commences Friday. The 20-year-old was having an outstanding tournament with five points in three games and should be given a chance to win a spot on the Red Wings' 23-man roster in camp, though it's more likely he opens 2014-15 at the AHL level.

Daniel Alfredsson, RW, DET

Daniel Alfredsson

Daniel Alfredsson: Seeing Back Specialists

News: Daniel Alfredsson is visiting with back specialists and is not going to training camp with the Red Wings, Helene St. James of The Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: With Daniel Alfredsson's back ailing, it's looking more and more likely last year may have been his final season. Alfie has said he won't come back unless he's 100 percent, and although he wants to return to Detroit, it remains to be seen whether his body will let him.

Kevin Westgarth

Westgarth To Try Out With Oilers

News: Kevin Westgarth signed a professional tryout with the Oilers and will join the team for training camp, NHL.com's Aaron Vickers reports.
Analysis: Kevin Westgarth is nothing more than a checking-line pugilist, giving him value primarily in leagues that count penalty minutes. He'll first have to impress the Oilers in training camp before he gets the opportunity to reprise his enforcer role.

Michael McCarron

Habs' McCarron Admits To Improper Conditioning

News: Michael McCarron, who is skating with teammates at Montreal's rookie development camp, admitted to showing up out of shape last season after the Canadiens selected him in the first round of the 2013 draft, Hockey Inside Out reports. "Now I know what it takes… I know how much hard work it takes and so now I'm back here ready to go," said McCarron.
Analysis: Michael McCarron skated with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, but even that level of play was more than he expected after spending two seasons with the U.S. National Development Team. He had a disappointing first half of the 2013 season, but did make noticeable improvement in the second half.

Brett Ritchie, RW, DAL

Brett Ritchie

Stars' Ritchie Injures FInger

News: Brett Ritchie suffered a finger injury Saturday against the Hurricanes, Mark Stepneski of the team's official site reports.
Analysis: Brett Ritchie will head to Dallas to get his finger checked out by a doctor, and is expected to miss the remainder of the NHL Prospects Tournament. The winger is just 21 years old, and was a productive member of AHL Texas last season in his first professional campaign. He racked up 22 goals and 26 assists in 68 games, and could get a look at the NHL level in 2014-15.

Tim Bozon, LW, MON

Tim Bozon

Habs' Bozon At Rookie Camp

News: Tim Bozon attended the first day of Montreal's rookie camp, Hockey Inside Out reports.
Analysis: Tim Bozon made headlines earlier this year when the contracted a bout of meningitis and wound up in a hospital for close to a month. He lost 40 pounds, but recovered enough to train with the French under-22 team. He's expected to skate with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey Leauge.

Ruslan Fedotenko, LW, PHI

Ruslan Fedotenko

Free Agent Fedotenko To Attend Devils' Camp

News: Ruslan Fedotenko will attend the Devils' training camp on a professional tryout basis, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: The 35-year-old Ruslan Fedotenko played in the KHL last season for HC Donbass, scoring 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists) in 46 games. At this point in his career, he offers little by way of fantasy upside, since his career high in points (41) came way back in 2005-06 with Tampa Bay. If he does manage to land a roster spot with the Devils, Fedotenko will likely be deployed in a checking-line role.

Kerby Rychel, LW, CLB

Kerby Rychel

Jackets' Rychel Makes Impression At Traverse

News: Kerby Rychel scored a goal and added three assists as the Blue Jackets' squad downed the Wild 6-4 in Friday's opener of the Traverse City prospect tournament.
Analysis: The Columbus team at this year's tournament is loaded with talent, headlined by 2013 first-round picks Kerby Rychel, Alexander Wennberg and Marko Dano. All three will likely spend most of the season in the AHL, but if Rychel plays well at Springfield, he could get called up when the Jackets need a little grit on the wing.

Adam Erne, LW, TB

Adam Erne

Bolts' Erne (Wrist) Still Awaiting Full Clearance

News: Adam Erne is still awaiting full clearance to practice following his July wrist surgery, Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Adam Erne was a limited participant during Thursday's informal workouts, and it looks as though he might not be completely ready to go when training camps commence. That being said, he does appear to be progressing positively from the injury, so it doesn't sound like he's at risk of missing a large portion of the upcoming season. After tearing up the QMJHL last season before earning a late call-up to AHL Syracuse, Erne figures to see more action in the minors once healthy.

Jonathan Drouin, LW, TB

Jonathan Drouin

Bolts' Prospect Drouin Impressing Veteran Players

News: Jonathan Drouin heads into camp in tremendous shape and he is already impressing veteran Lightning players during informal workouts, reports the Tampa Bay Times. "Physically, he looks bigger, stronger," said team captain Steven Stamkos. "Skating looks great, shot looks great. And he always had the smarts and quickness and playmaking ability ... he looks great out there."
Analysis: Jonathan Drouin is out to show the team that he has grown up over the course of the past year after he was sent to juniors after last year's camp. "Last year didn't work out the way I wanted it to, but this year is a different story," Drouin said. "I want to be on this club. I'm a step closer than I was last year. I'm way more tested, I've got to push hard. It's going to be a month full of work." Prospect camp started Thursday for the Bolts and Drouin will be front-and-center in that competition after busting it in training six days a week since the start of July. He's a Calder favorite already.

Tomas Vincour, RW, COL

Tomas Vincour

Vincour Returns From KHL To Join Avs

News: Tomas Vincour signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: After receiving mild NHL interest last offseason, Tomas Vincour defected to the KHL, where he totaled six goals and five assists in 39 games for Kazan Ak-Bars. The production was enough for him to earn a contract with the Avs, with whom he suited up for two games during his last taste of NHL action. Given the team's crowded forward picture at the moment, it seems likely Vincour spends most -- if not all -- of 2014-15 at AHL Lake Erie.

Devin Setoguchi, RW, WPG

Devin Setoguchi

Flames Sign Setoguchi To One-Year Deal

News: Devin Setoguchi signed a one-year deal with the Flames on Saturday.
Analysis: Devin Setoguchi spent last season with the Jets, scoring 11 goals to go with 16 assists in 75 games. The seven-year veteran has amassed 127 goals and 122 assists in his career. It's a fairly low-risk move for Calgary, which can let go of Setoguchi after the season if he fails to regain the offensive touch that led to three straight 20-plus goal seasons with the Sharks.

8/19/2014

Eric Selleck, LW, FLA

Eric Selleck

Coyotes Ink Selleck To AHL Contract

News: Eric Selleck signed a minor-league contract with AHL Portland on Tuesday.
Analysis: Eric Selleck, 26, is a longtime AHL vet who offers much physicality on the checking line. He's totaled at least 160 penalty minutes in each of his last four seasons in the minors, but won't have great odds of earning a promotion to Arizona at any point.

Adam Hall, RW, PHI

Adam Hall

Ex-Flyer Hall Signs With Swiss Club

News: Adam Hall signed a one-year contract with HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland on Saturday.
Analysis: Adam Hall, 33, appeared in 80 games for the Flyers last season, contributing only nine points and a minus-15 rating. With a light market waiting for him in free agency this offseason, he'll head to Switzerland for what likely amounts to larger payday.

Mikael Samuelsson, RW, DET

Mikael Samuelsson

Ex-Red Wing Samuelsson Signs With Swedish Team

News: Mikael Samuelsson signed with Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League on Thursday, Brian Manzullo of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Now 37 years old, Mikael Samuelsson seems content to conclude his career in his native country. The winger was limited to 26 games with the Red Wings last season due to injury, finishing with just three points.

7/29/2014

Peter Mueller, RW, FLA

Peter Mueller

Blues Sign Mueller

News: Peter Mueller has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jeremy Rutherford reports.
Analysis: Peter Mueller spent last season in Switzerland, scoring 24 goals and 46 points for Kloten of the Swiss A-League. Although he carries concussion concerns, Mueller is a skilled winger who will provide the Blues with a solid depth option up front.

7/29/2014

Jason Williams, RW, PIT

Jason Williams

Oilers Sign Williams To AHL Deal

News: Jason Williams agreed to a one-year contract with AHL Oklahoma City on Friday.
Analysis: Jason Williams, 33, last appeared at the NHL level in 2011-12 with the Penguins. He spent the last two seasons with Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss Elite League, charting 34 goals and 30 assists over 79 total games. He'll attempt to parlay his AHL contract into a call-up to the Oilers, but his age will certainly work against him.

7/28/2014

Brandon Segal, RW, WAS

Brandon Segal

Free Agent Segal Signs With KHL Squad

News: Brandon Segal has signed with Medvescak Zagreb of the KHL.
Analysis: Brandon Segal, 31, totaled 17 goals and 27 assists over 63 games with AHL Hershey last season. He's appeared in just 103 NHL games since he was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Predators.

7/28/2014

Matt Watkins, RW, WAS

Matt Watkins

Ex-Capital Watkins Signs With Austrian Club

News: Matt Watkins signed a one-year contract with the Vienna Capitals of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the top league in Austria, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After spending all of last season at AHL Hershey in the Washington organization, Matt Watkins will hop across the Atlantic to join a club that also bills itself as the Capitals. The 27-year-old totaled 27 points in 73 games with Hershey in 2013-14.

7/28/2014

Daniel Winnik, LW, ANA

Daniel Winnik

Leafs Sign Winnik To One-Year Deal

News: Daniel Winnik signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Analysis: The 29-year-old appeared in 76 games for the Ducks last season, notching career highs in assists (24) and points (30). He also added 23 penalty minutes to go with a plus-six rating. One of the better available role players, Daniel Winnik should step into a consistent role with Toronto next season, likely as a member of their third or fourth line.

7/24/2014

Taylor Pyatt, LW, PIT

Taylor Pyatt

Ex-Penguin Pyatt Signs With Swiss Club

News: Taylor Pyatt signed a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette of Switzerland on Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Taylor Pyatt was only a bit contributor for the Rangers and Penugins last season, totaling five points over 56 NHL games. The former No. 8 overall pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft will attempt to restore some value overseas before returning stateside, perhaps next season.

7/18/2014

Matt D'Agostini, RW, BUF

Matt D'Agostini

D'Agostini Signs Deal With Swiss Club

News: Matt D'Agostini signed a one-year deal with Geneva-Servette in Switzerland.
Analysis: Matt D'Agostini split last season between the Penguins and Sabres, appearing in 57 total games. He notched five goals and six assists while posting a minus-14 rating to go with 22 penalty minutes.

7/17/2014

Andrej Nestrasil, RW, DET

Andrej Nestrasil

Red Wings Re-Sign Nestrasil

News: Andrej Nestrasil re-signed with the Red Wings on a one-year, two-way contract Thursday.
Analysis: Andrej Nestrasil, 23, spent all of last season with AHL Grand Rapids, logging 16 goals and 20 assists over 70 contests. He'll likely spend a fourth consecutive season in the minors, barring an incredible showing during training camp.

7/15/2014

Kirill Kabanov, LW, NYI

Kirill Kabanov

Islanders Place Kabanov On Waivers

News: Kirill Kabanov was placed on unconditional waivers by the Islanders on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 21-year-old is extremely skilled but his lack of maturity has hampered his prospects for an NHL career. The Islanders loaned him to MoDo in Sweden last season, and Tuesday's move appears to signify the team has pulled the plug on the Kirill Kabanov experiment.

7/10/2014

Nick Johnson, RW, PIT

Nick Johnson

Ex-Bruin Johnson Heads To Sweden

News: Nick Johnson signed with the Vaxjo Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League on Thursday.
Analysis: Nick Johnson spent most of the past season at AHL Providence, where he compiled 18 goals and 24 assists over 51 games. The 28-year-old has struggled to find a permanent place in the NHL despite 113 career games at the level, so he opted for the stability of Sweden rather than another year slumming it in the minors.
