Caron Signs Two-Way Deal With Blues

News: Jordan Caron signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues on Thursday.
Analysis: Jordan Caron saw time with the Bruins and Avalanche last season, but failed to register a single point in 30 games. The Blues boast an overwhelming stable of talent at forward, so it seems unlikely that he'll be able to claim a roster spot with the team out of training camp. Look for him to head to AHL Chicago to open the 2015-16 campaign.

Cole Schneider

Sens Sign Schneider To One-Year Deal

News: Cole Schneider signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Senators on Thursday.
Analysis: The 24-year-old Cole Schneider will more than likely return to AHL Binghamton for the fourth straight season. He recorded 29 goals and 58 points in 69 games for Binghamton in 2014-15.

Trevor Smith, LW, TOR

Trevor Smith

Ex-Maple Leaf Smith Headed For Switzerland

News: Trevor Smith signed a two-year contract Wednesday with Bern of the Swiss Elite League, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Analysis: Despite suiting up in 54 games in the NHL last season with the Maple Leafs, Trevor Smith wasn't likely to command much interest in free agency on anything more than a two-way deal. As a result, he'll opt to head to Europe, where he likely received a more lucrative offer. At 30 years old, Smith could still surface in the NHL again somewhere down the line.

Martin St. Louis, RW, NYR

Martin St. Louis

Rangers' St. Louis Retires

News: Martin St. Louis announced his retirement as an NHL player on Thursday.
Analysis: The 40-year-old winger, who recorded 21 goals and 52 points in 74 games with the Rangers last season, finishes up his distinguished 16-year NHL career with 391 goals and 1,033 points in 1,134 games. In addition to being a member of the Lightning when the team won the 2003-04 Stanley Cup, Martin St. Louis -- who entered the league as an undrafted free agent -- also earned his share of individual honors. Most notably, he was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP in 2003-04, as well as being a two-time Art Ross Trophy winner and three-time recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

Justin Florek, LW, BOS

Justin Florek

Islanders Sign Florek

News: Justin Florek signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders on Thursday.
Analysis: Justin Florek, who recorded 35 points in 73 games for AHL Providence this past season, will serve as a depth forward with the Isles and if he does see NHL action this coming season, it would presumably be in a bottom-six role.

Cody Beach, RW, STL

Cody Beach

Blues Re-Sign Beach

News: Cody Beach re-signed with the Blues on Wednesday on a one-year, two-way contract.
Analysis: Cody Beach racked up 210 penalty minutes in 41 games with AHL Chicago last season, while also spending six games with ECHL Alaska. The 22-year-old winger's toughness and willingness to drop the gloves may make him a fourth-line candidate for the Blues at some point down the road, but with Ryan Reaves filling that role just fine for the parent club, Beach remains blocked for the time being.

7/2/2015

Danny Kristo, RW, NYR

Danny Kristo

Kristo Signs With Blues

News: The Blues signed Danny Kristo to a one-year, two-way contract on Thursday.
Analysis: Danny Kristo, who notched 22 goals and 46 points in 72 games with AHL Hartford this past season, bolsters the Blues' depth at right wing. At 25, Kristo has yet to see regular season NHL action, though he could debut on that front in 2015-16 if/when injuries hit the big club's forward corps.

Viktor Tikhonov, LW, ARI

Viktor Tikhonov

Tikhonov Leaves KHL For Blackhawks

News: Viktor Tikhonov signed a one-year, $1.04 million contract with the Blackhawks on Wednesday, The Hockey News reports.
Analysis: After suiting up for St. Petersburg in the KHL for the last four seasons, Viktor Tikhonov was apparently quite eager to test himself in North America, as he reportedly took a $2 million pay cut to leave Russia. With the Blackhawks desperate to create cap room for the start of the coming season, the low-cost signing Tikhonov could be exactly what they need to create salary relief. Despite his minimal price, Tikhonov isn't completely bereft of value, as he was a former first-round selection by the Coyotes in 2008 and showed some scoring ability with St. Petersburg last season, supplying eight goals and 16 assists in 49 games. The Blackhawks will take a long look at him during training camp and see where he fits in best.

Tyler Biggs, RW, TOR

Tyler Biggs

Biggs Acquired By Penguins In Massive Deal

News: Tyler Biggs (Achilles) was traded Wednesday to the Penguins along with forward Phil Kessel, defenseman Tim Erixon, and a 2016 second-round draft pick in exchange for forwards Nick Spaling, Kasperi Kapanen, defenseman Scott Harrington, and 2016 first- and third-round draft picks, Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Tyler Biggs, 22, is a former first-round draft pick in 2011, but he's widely viewed as a bust at this point. He tore his Achilles while playing with AHL Toronto last season and underwent surgery in March, and it's not certain if he'll be fully healthy by the time the minor-league season kicks off. With his new organization, expect Biggs to settle in as an organizational depth option at forward for AHL Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

7/1/2015

Kasperi Kapanen, RW, PIT

Kasperi Kapanen

Leafs Get Kapanen Back In Kessel Deal

News: Kasperi Kapanen was acquired Wednesday by the Leafs along with forward Nick Spaling, defenseman Scott Harrington, and first- and third-round draft choices in 2016 in exchange for forwards Phil Kessel and Tyler Biggs, defenseman Tim Erixon, and a 2016 second-round pick, Sportsnet.ca reports.
Analysis: Kessel is the headliner of the deal and should be able to provide an immediate impact for the Penguins, but the 18-year-old Kasperi Kapanen provides the rebuilding Leafs with another talented forward to construct their future around. The Pens' first-round choice in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Kapanen arrived in North America late last season after tallying 11 goals and 21 points in 41 games for KalPa Kuopio of the Finnish Elite League. Had he remained with the Penguins, Kapanen was a candidate to make the club out of training camp this coming season, and he could be destined for a similar fate in Toronto. Center William Nylander, the Leafs' first-round choice last season, and Kapanen could become one of the NHL's more lethal combinations a few years from now.

Brad Boyes, RW, FLA

Panthers' Boyes Placed On Waivers

News: Brad Boyes was placed on buyout waivers Tuesday, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.
Analysis: Brad Boyes is expected to clear waivers Wednesday afternoon, with the Panthers likely to pick up the remaining $2.5 million on his contract. It's somewhat of a puzzling move, as Boyes recorded a respectable 38 points in 78 games last season, but it likely speaks to the Panthers' motivation to open up roster spots for some of their younger talent. Once he becomes an unrestricted free agent, Boyes shouldn't have much difficulty finding work as a depth forward for another team.

Alexander Semin, RW, CAR

Alexander Semin

Canes' Semin Placed On Waivers

News: Alexander Semin was placed on unconditional waivers Tuesday, and the Hurricanes are expected to buy out his contract, NHL.com reports.
Analysis: Alexander Semin will be subject to waivers, and if he clears as expected, he'll be bought out by the team Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old has three years remaining on the five-year, $35 million extension he inked with Carolina in March of 2013., but vastly underachieved before the Hurricanes opted to the pull the plug. Semin tallied only six goals and 13 assists in 57 games in 2014-15. Despite those struggles, he could still provide some scoring punch on the second or third line of a team that possesses better depth at forward than the Hurricanes.

Philip Lane, RW, ARI

Philip Lane

Lane Not Qualified By Coyotes

News: Philip Lane wasn't given a qualifying offer by the Coyotes and will enter free agency, the Arizona Republic's Sarah McLellan reports.
Analysis: Philip Lane never appeared in an NHL game for the Coyotes after signing his entry-level deal three years ago, most recently posting 10 points in 53 games for AHL Portland. He'll look for another job in the minors or perhaps a gig overseas.

6/29/2015

Tye McGinn, LW, ARI

Tye McGinn

Coyotes Cut Ties With McGinn

News: Tye McGinn wasn't given a qualifying offer by the Coyotes and will enter free agency, the Arizona Republic's Sarah McLellan reports.
Analysis: The gritty winger picked up two points and 10 PIM in 18 games after coming over to Arizona from San Jose. He'll now look to catch on with his fourth NHL franchise, but even if he avoids being stuck in the AHL, Tye McGinn will likely be looking at bottom-line minutes and frequent healthy scratches.

Cory Conacher, LW, VAN

Cory Conacher

Canucks Let Go Of Conacher

News: Cory Conacher wasn't extended a qualifying offer by the Canucks on Monday and will become an unrestricted free agent, Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun reports.
Analysis: The fall continues for Cory Conacher, who just two years ago fetched star goalie Ben Bishop as a trade return. Since arriving in Ottawa in that April 2013 deal, Conacher has bounced around four organizations and finished out last season at AHL Utica, where he tallied seven goals and 16 points in 20 games. He's still just 25 years old, but is likely bound for the minors to start the 2015-16 campaign.

Drayson Bowman, LW, MON

Drayson Bowman

Habs' Bowman Becomes Free Agent

News: Drayson Bowman wasn't tendered a contract by the Canadiens, making him an unrestricted free agent, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: Drayson Bowman spent most of the 2014-15 campaign with AHL Hamilton, where he produced 14 goals and 19 assists in 62 games. He made three appearances with the Canadiens during the course of the season, but at 26 years old, he's no longer much of a prospect.

Eric Tangradi, LW, MON

Eric Tangradi

Habs Don't Tender Contract To Tangradi

News: Eric Tangradi wasn't tendered a contract by the Canadiens, making him an unrestricted free agent, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Analysis: Eric Tangradi skated in seven games for the Habs in 2014-15, logging no points. The 26-year-old will try to land a two-way contract with another club this offseason.

6/29/2015

Patrick Holland, RW, MON

Patrick Holland

Jets Renounce Rights To Holland

News: Patrick Holland wasn't extended a qualifying offer by the Jets on Monday and will become an unrestricted free agent, Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press reports.
Analysis: Patrick Holland had already negotiated a deal to play for HPK of the Finnish Elite League this season, but Monday's transaction will allow him to join any NHL organization if and when he decides to return to North America. The 23-year-old didn't appear in any NHL games last season after skating in five for the Canadiens in 2013-14.

6/29/2015

Dana Tyrell, RW, CLB

Dana Tyrell

Jackets' Tyrell Won't Be Retained

News: Dana Tyrell wasn't extended a qualifying offer by the Blue Jackets on Monday and will become an unrestricted free agent.
Analysis: Dana Tyrell appeared in three games for the Blue Jackets early last season, but otherwise languished at AHL Springfield, where he tallied 13 goals and 26 points in 51 games. The 26-year-old figures to spend most of 2015-16 in the minors.

6/29/2015

Brad Ross, LW, TOR

Brad Ross

Oilers Renounce Rights To Ross

News: Brad Ross wasn't tendered a qualifying offer by the Oilers on Monday, meaning he'll become an unrestricted free agent, Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: Brad Ross had a deal in place in May to play for the Iserlohn Roosters of Germany the coming season, but the Oilers would have retained his rights had they elected to extend a qualifying offer. Instead, Ross, who the Oilers had just acquired days earlier at the NHL Draft, will be free to sign with any team should he elect to return to North America down the road.

6/29/2015

Curtis Hamilton, LW, EDM

Curtis Hamilton

Oilers, C. Hamilton Part Ways

News: Curtis Hamilton wasn't tendered a qualifying offer by the Oilers on Monday, meaning he'll become an unrestricted free agent, Jason Gregor of the Edmonton Journal reports.
Analysis: Curtis Hamilton skated in one game last season for the Oilers in what marked his NHL debut, but it's clear the organization didn't have visions of him making an impact down the road. The 23-year-old will try to latch on with another club on a two-way deal.

6/28/2015

Rich Clune, LW, NSH

Rich Clune

Preds To Buy Out Clune After All

News: Rich Clune will be bought out by the Predators after clearing waivers over the weekend, Darren Dreger of TSN reports.
Analysis: Earlier indications suggested that Rich Clune wasn't going to be bought out by the Predators, but the team ultimately elected to cut ties. Clune will thus become an unrestricted free agent, though don't expect him to generate a ton of interest on the open market. The 28-year-old's lack of offensive ability will likely force him to settle for a one-year, two-way deal.

6/28/2015

Ryan Haggerty, RW, NYR

Ryan Haggerty

Blackhawks Acquire Haggerty From Rangers

News: The Blackhawks acquired Ryan Haggerty from the Rangers in exchange for Antti Raanta on Saturday.
Analysis: It's a good move for the Blackhawks, as they will soon be in dire need of additional depth at forward, as they are likely to lose Patrick Sharp among others due to salary cap constraints as soon as free agency opens on July 1. With the emergence of Scott Darling in 2014-15, Raanta became an expendable commodity. Ryan Haggerty has yet to make his NHL debut, but is only 22 years old, and performed well in the AHL last season. Haggerty was able to rack up 33 points in 76 games with AHL Hartford in 2014-15, and will likely split time between the AHL and NHL next season.

Steve Bernier, RW, NJ

Steve Bernier

Bernier Will Not Return To Devils Next Season

News: The Devils will not attempt to re-sign Steve Bernier in the offseason, Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Despite tying career bests in goals (16) and assists (16) in 2014-15, the Devils have no interest in re-signing Steve Bernier in the offseason. Although he's only 30 years old, the Devils may be looking to get younger across the board, which means Bernier will be in search of a new team for the 2015-16 campaign. He shouldn't have too much trouble finding a suitor, however, as there are plenty of teams who could use a veteran forward like Bernier who can still put the puck in the net on a semi-regular basis.

Eric Fehr, RW, WAS

Eric Fehr

Fehr Will Not Return To Capitals Next Season

News: Eric Fehr (elbow) will not return to the Capitals next season, Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington reports.
Analysis: With this news, Eric Fehr is now set to test the market when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He's posted back-to-back seasons of 30 plus total points, and will fit in nicely with a team looking for a boost in offensive production from its bottom-six forwards. He's still recovering from elbow surgery he underwent on June 4, and will hope to be ready for the start of his new team's training camp in September.
