Devin Setoguchi

Flames Sign Setoguchi To One-Year Deal

News: Devin Setoguchi signed a one-year deal with the Flames on Saturday.
Analysis: Devin Setoguchi spent last season with the Jets, scoring 11 goals to go with 16 assists in 75 games. The seven-year veteran has amassed 127 goals and 122 assists in his career. It's a fairly low-risk move for Calgary, which can let go of Setoguchi after the season if he fails to regain the offensive touch that led to three straight 20-plus goal seasons with the Sharks.

Ryan Malone, LW, TB

Ryan Malone

Free Agent Malone Pleads No Contest

News: Ryan Malone pleaded no contest Tuesday to his DUI charge stemming from an April arrest, but did agree to a pretrial diversion program for the cocaine possession charge he received in the same incident, Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Analysis: The diversion program will help Ryan Malone's chances of getting the felony drug charge dismissed if he completes the required criteria. Malone's pending legal issues have made teams reluctant to extend a contract offer just yet, but several clubs are said to be interested in the 34-year-old. Once he completes the program and completes community service for his DUI charge, Malone should latch on with a team.

Eric Selleck, LW, FLA

Eric Selleck

Coyotes Ink Selleck To AHL Contract

News: Eric Selleck signed a minor-league contract with AHL Portland on Tuesday.
Analysis: Eric Selleck, 26, is a longtime AHL vet who offers much physicality on the checking line. He's totaled at least 160 penalty minutes in each of his last four seasons in the minors, but won't have great odds of earning a promotion to Arizona at any point.

Daniel Alfredsson, RW, DET

Daniel Alfredsson

Alfredsson To Decide on 2014-15 In Mid-September

News: Daniel Alfredsson may not make a decision on returning to the NHL for 2014-15 until mid-September and could even come to training camp in Detroit on a tryout, according to Ian Mendes of TSN1200 Ottawa.
Analysis: Alfie had 49 points in 68 games last season, but is 42 and on the downside of a glorious career. The Wings might actually be hoping he retires after Thomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist stepped up late in the season and will press for more playing time this season.

Tim Bozon, LW, MON

Tim Bozon

Habs' Bozon Plays In Game

News: Tim Bozon, who is recovering from a bout of meningitis, played his first game of hockey since becoming ill, the Montreal Gazette reports.
Analysis: Tim Bozon has been working out in France this summer and was given the green light to play for that country's under-23 team at a tournament in the Czech Republic. He was expected to play two games in the tourney, but ended up playing all six.

Simon Gagne, LW, PHI

Simon Gagne

Bruins To Give Gagne A Chance

News: Simon Gagne is slated to attend the Bruins' training camp on a tryout basis, the Boston Herald reports.
Analysis: The 34-year-old last saw NHL action in 2012-13, but with the Bruins dealing with cap issues and looking to establish winger depth, they'll give Simon Gagne a training-camp look and a chance to prove that he's healthy enough to contribute this coming season.

Adam Hall, RW, PHI

Adam Hall

Ex-Flyer Hall Signs With Swiss Club

News: Adam Hall signed a one-year contract with HC Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland on Saturday.
Analysis: Adam Hall, 33, appeared in 80 games for the Flyers last season, contributing only nine points and a minus-15 rating. With a light market waiting for him in free agency this offseason, he'll head to Switzerland for what likely amounts to larger payday.

7/31/2014

Mikael Samuelsson, RW, DET

Mikael Samuelsson

Ex-Red Wing Samuelsson Signs With Swedish Team

News: Mikael Samuelsson signed with Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League on Thursday, Brian Manzullo of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis: Now 37 years old, Mikael Samuelsson seems content to conclude his career in his native country. The winger was limited to 26 games with the Red Wings last season due to injury, finishing with just three points.

7/29/2014

Peter Mueller, RW, FLA

Peter Mueller

Blues Sign Mueller

News: Peter Mueller has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Jeremy Rutherford reports.
Analysis: Peter Mueller spent last season in Switzerland, scoring 24 goals and 46 points for Kloten of the Swiss A-League. Although he carries concussion concerns, Mueller is a skilled winger who will provide the Blues with a solid depth option up front.

Jason Williams, RW, PIT

Jason Williams

Oilers Sign Williams To AHL Deal

News: Jason Williams agreed to a one-year contract with AHL Oklahoma City on Friday.
Analysis: Jason Williams, 33, last appeared at the NHL level in 2011-12 with the Penguins. He spent the last two seasons with Ambri-Piotta in the Swiss Elite League, charting 34 goals and 30 assists over 79 total games. He'll attempt to parlay his AHL contract into a call-up to the Oilers, but his age will certainly work against him.

Brandon Segal, RW, WAS

Brandon Segal

Free Agent Segal Signs With KHL Squad

News: Brandon Segal has signed with Medvescak Zagreb of the KHL.
Analysis: Brandon Segal, 31, totaled 17 goals and 27 assists over 63 games with AHL Hershey last season. He's appeared in just 103 NHL games since he was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Predators.

Matt Watkins, RW, WAS

Matt Watkins

Ex-Capital Watkins Signs With Austrian Club

News: Matt Watkins signed a one-year contract with the Vienna Capitals of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the top league in Austria, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.
Analysis: After spending all of last season at AHL Hershey in the Washington organization, Matt Watkins will hop across the Atlantic to join a club that also bills itself as the Capitals. The 27-year-old totaled 27 points in 73 games with Hershey in 2013-14.

7/28/2014

Ruslan Fedotenko, LW, PHI

Ruslan Fedotenko

Ex-NHLer Fedotenko Ponders Return to North America

News: Ruslan Fedotenko, who signed a three-year, $9 million contract with HC Donbass of the KHL last summer, is looking to return to the NHL for the upcoming season, the Toronto Star reports.
Analysis: HC Donbass, the only Ukrainian team in the KHL, will go on a sabbatical for the upcoming season in light of the ongoing political tumult between Ukraine and Russia, which was recent escalated following the downing of a civilian jet on July 17, resulting in 298 deaths. While the rest of the KHL is expected to proceed operations as normal despite the increasing unrest in the region, several players from Donbass are expected to defect elsewhere, with Ruslan Fedotenko representing the most recognizable name on the roster. The 35-year-old, who scored four goals and nine assists in 47 games with the Flyers in 2012-13, has already had "discussions with multiple NHL teams," according to his agent. Fedotenko would likely be ticketed for no better than a bottom-six role with any NHL club, should he eventually find his way back in the league.

7/28/2014

Daniel Winnik, LW, ANA

Daniel Winnik

Leafs Sign Winnik To One-Year Deal

News: Daniel Winnik signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Analysis: The 29-year-old appeared in 76 games for the Ducks last season, notching career highs in assists (24) and points (30). He also added 23 penalty minutes to go with a plus-six rating. One of the better available role players, Daniel Winnik should step into a consistent role with Toronto next season, likely as a member of their third or fourth line.

7/24/2014

Taylor Pyatt, LW, PIT

Taylor Pyatt

Ex-Penguin Pyatt Signs With Swiss Club

News: Taylor Pyatt signed a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette of Switzerland on Wednesday, Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: Taylor Pyatt was only a bit contributor for the Rangers and Penugins last season, totaling five points over 56 NHL games. The former No. 8 overall pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft will attempt to restore some value overseas before returning stateside, perhaps next season.

7/18/2014

Matt D'Agostini, RW, BUF

Matt D'Agostini

D'Agostini Signs Deal With Swiss Club

News: Matt D'Agostini signed a one-year deal with Geneva-Servette in Switzerland.
Analysis: Matt D'Agostini split last season between the Penguins and Sabres, appearing in 57 total games. He notched five goals and six assists while posting a minus-14 rating to go with 22 penalty minutes.

7/17/2014

Andrej Nestrasil, RW, DET

Andrej Nestrasil

Red Wings Re-Sign Nestrasil

News: Andrej Nestrasil re-signed with the Red Wings on a one-year, two-way contract Thursday.
Analysis: Andrej Nestrasil, 23, spent all of last season with AHL Grand Rapids, logging 16 goals and 20 assists over 70 contests. He'll likely spend a fourth consecutive season in the minors, barring an incredible showing during training camp.

7/15/2014

Kirill Kabanov, LW, NYI

Kirill Kabanov

Islanders Place Kabanov On Waivers

News: Kirill Kabanov was placed on unconditional waivers by the Islanders on Tuesday.
Analysis: The 21-year-old is extremely skilled but his lack of maturity has hampered his prospects for an NHL career. The Islanders loaned him to MoDo in Sweden last season, and Tuesday's move appears to signify the team has pulled the plug on the Kirill Kabanov experiment.

7/10/2014

Nick Johnson, RW, PIT

Nick Johnson

Ex-Bruin Johnson Heads To Sweden

News: Nick Johnson signed with the Vaxjo Lakers of the Swedish Hockey League on Thursday.
Analysis: Nick Johnson spent most of the past season at AHL Providence, where he compiled 18 goals and 24 assists over 51 games. The 28-year-old has struggled to find a permanent place in the NHL despite 113 career games at the level, so he opted for the stability of Sweden rather than another year slumming it in the minors.

7/1/2014

Brodie Reid, RW, SJ

Brodie Reid

Sharks Don't Qualify Reid

News: Brodie Reid was among the restricted free agents who were not given qualifying offers by the Sharks on Monday.
Analysis: Brodie Reid had a decent season with AHL Worcester last season, posting 11 goals and 14 assists through 55 games -- good for fifth on the team in scoring. Reid is young and will likely find a home with another AHL team on a two-way contract.

6/27/2014

Daniel Carcillo, LW, NYR

Daniel Carcillo

Carcillo To Stick With Rangers?

News: With the news of fourth-line winger Derek Dorsett being dealt to Vancouver on Friday, Daniel Carcillo's chances of re-signing with the Eastern Conference champions increases.
Analysis: The unrestricted free agent was originally acquired at midseason from the Rangers' eventual Stanley Cup opponents, Los Angeles. While Dorsett's exit is more about the organization tightening up cap space, it certainly improves Daniel Carcillo's importance to the team. The 29-year-old scrapper logged five goals and 55 penalty minutes in 39 games with the Blueshirts this season, including two goals in just eight postseason contests.

6/17/2014

Ray Whitney, LW, DAL

Ray Whitney

Stars Will Not Offer Whitney A Contract Extension

News: The Stars announced Tuesday that they do not intend to offer Ray Whitney a contract extension, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Analysis: Ray Whitney, though he's 42-years old, could find a one-year contract with another team if he chooses to play another year. He finished this season with nine goals and 23 assists through 69 games played.

6/17/2014

Ville Leino, LW, BUF

Ville Leino

Sabres' Leino Placed On Unconditional Waivers

News: Ville Leino was placed on unconditional waivers Tuesday by the Sabres for the purpose of a buyout, TSN reports.
Analysis: This move comes as no surprise as Ville Leino was one of the team's worst players on the league's worst team. Leino has been with the Sabres for the past three seasons after he signed a six-year, $27 million deal in 2011. He was coming off a career season with the Flyers that earned him his big contract with the Sabres, but Leino never lived up to expectations. He had a subpar first season with the Sabres, playing in 71 games and scoring eight goals and 17 assists. That disappointing first campaign was followed by an injury-riddled 2012-13 before he hit rock bottom in 2013-14 when he failed to record a single goal in 58 games and posted just 15 assists to finish with a minus-16 rating. He was expected to make $11 million over the next three seasons, which would have been one of the highest salaries on the team, but he was not productive enough this past season to justify his salary going forward. With the buyout, the Sabres will pay him $7.6 million over the next six years. It is unlikely Leino will have lucrative options in the NHL and may return to Europe to finish his career.

George Parros, RW, MON

George Parros

Canadiens Won't Bring Back Parros

News: George Parros will not be offered a new contract by the Canadiens, making him an unrestricted free agent, TSN reports.
Analysis: George Parros saw time in only 27 games for the Canadiens this season and did not appear in any of the teams playoff games. The 34-year-old was acquired last summer in a trade with the Panthers and has not appeared in more than 46 games in a season since 2010-11.
