| Fantasy Analysis |
This streak just shows you the kind of resiliency a star player like Malkin has. He faced a lot of criticism after enduring the worst slump of his pro career to only follow it up with a solid 10-game run. This is why you should never bench Malkin in Fantasy. He is just too valuable. (Updated 02/07/2010).

Crosby, Pens earn shootout win over Wings in Finals rematch
Sidney Crosby scored in regulation and the shootout and the Penguins overcame Jimmy Howard's second successive 46-save game to beat the Red Wings 2-1 on Sunday in the rivals' first game since Pittsburgh won Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

| Playing in the shadow of Sidney Crosby and having to battle Alex Ovechkin for the title of best Russian hockey player hasn't been easy for Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin, but the 23-year-old forward hasn't let those obstacles prevent him from helping Pittsburgh attain the NHL's greatest honor. The Penguins front office has had no complaints since drafting Malkin second overall in 2004 and were quite pleased with his 2008-09 effort, which helped result in a Stanley Cup championship. Not only did Malkin lead the NHL with 78 assists and 113 points during the regular season, but he had a playoff-high 22 assists and 36 points. He became the first player since Joe Sakic (1996) to record at least 30 points in the postseason. He was in the race for the Hart Trophy (MVP), but Ovechkin won it a second straight season. However, some would say Malkin landed the greatest prize of all -- Lord Stanley's Cup. A closer look at Malkin's numbers will show a steady increase with each season he has been in the NHL. He totaled 85 points as a rookie and 106 in 2007-08 before reaching 113 last year. He also had a career-high plus-17 rating and 290 shots. Malkin's goals did drop from 47 to 35 last season, but he also proved quite durable by missing just four games in his first three NHL seasons and none over the last two. He is also a clutch performer in the playoffs with 62 points (24 goals) in 49 games. If you think Malkin is all about the offense, you would be sorely mistaken. He led the NHL with 94 takeaways in '08-09 and chipped in two short-handed goals. Malkin is one of the most complete players in the NHL and should be the second forward taken after Ovechkin in all Fantasy formats. (Updated 8/18/09) |
