Versteeg returns in big way Thursday: Kris Versteeg scored two power-play goals in Chicago's five-goal second period to help the Blackhawks rout the Calgary Flames 7-1 on Thursday in a rematch of a first-round playoff series. Versteeg was back in the lineup after missing one game with an upper-body injury. He gave Chicago the lead for good when he beat Miikka Kiprusoff on a tip-in 2:01 into the second. Versteeg then capped the second-period outburst with his second goal at 19:22. (Updated 11/20/2009).

Coach Joel Quenneville called Versteeg's injury a short-term ailment and he proved to be right. The time off helped Versteeg end a four-game goals drought. Versteeg has six goals and 14 points in 19 games. He is a decent No. 4 or No. 5 Fantasy forward when healthy. (Updated 11/20/2009).

| Kris Versteeg wasn't even a blip on the rookie radar when the 2008-09 season kicked off. Two months later, everyone quickly put a scouting report together on the 2004 fifth-round pick. Versteeg was a perfect complement on the team's top line with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. He produced seven goals, 20 points and a plus-11 rating in his first 22 games. Versteeg was the early leader for the Calder Trophy (top rookie) and ended up being a finalist before losing the award to Steve Mason. Versteeg's production slowed down in the second half (15 points in the final 33 games), but he still finished first among NHL rookies with 31 assists, second with 53 points and fourth with 22 goals. He led Chicago and set a franchise record by a rookie with four short-handed scores and also tied for third in the NHL with seven short-handed points. The 23-year-old forward became one of Chicago's top two-way forwards. The addition of Marian Hossa could steal some of Versteeg's scoring chances in 2009-10, but he still passes as a viable No. 5 or No. 6 Fantasy forward. He also has value in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
