Staal has begun to heat up again since moving on a scoring line with Evgeni Malkin. Staal does his best work alongside Malkin, but he never seems to stick there since Pittsburgh needs him on the third line at times. However, now is one of those times to start Staal since he is on a roll. (Updated 02/07/2010).

| It's funny how not worrying about money can put someone's mind at ease. Just take Penguins center Jordan Staal for instance. The 20-year-old forward was in the last year of his contract in 2008-09 and had pending free agency looming after the season. He wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, but he realized he had to put his best foot forward in the event he had to attract other teams. However, Staal looked very apprehensive in the early season and clearly distracted at times. Relief finally came in the form of a four-year extension in January and it was smooth sailing for Staal, as Pittsburgh hoisted the Stanley Cup at the end of the season. The coaching change to Dan Bylsma didn't hurt either. Staal had six goals, 15 points and a plus-13 rating in his last 19 games and finished with a career-high 27 assists and 49 points in 82 contests. Staal has missed just one game in his first three NHL seasons and none since his rookie year in 2006-07. He has two 20-goal seasons and is still an important penalty killer for Pittsburgh. Staal, who had 156 hits last season, remains a decent low-end Fantasy forward. He is also worth a look in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed stats. (Updated 8/18/09) |
