| After waiting patiently for Frans Nielsen to develop, the Islanders finally got to reap some of the benefits of their investment in 2008-09. The 2002 third-round pick set new career highs in games played (59), goals (9), assists (24), points (33), average ice time (16:32), penalty minutes (18), game-winning goals (2) and shots (101). It was the most extensive action of his North American career since coming over from the Swedish Elite League in 2006-07. Nielsen was actually starting to settle into a groove in November (seven points in 10 games) before multiple leg injuries sidelined him until February. He finished strong with 20 points (seven goals) in his last 33 games. Nielsen, the NHL's first born and raised Danish player, also won 47.2 percent of his faceoffs (358 for 758). The addition of No. 1 pick John Tavares and the continued development of Josh Bailey could cost Nielsen some time at center, so he remains more of a low-end Fantasy option. (Updated 8/18/09) |
