Backstrom picks up sixth win: Minnesota G Niklas Backstrom earned his sixth victory of the season and third win in his last four starts on Saturday, beating the Stars 3-2. Turco faced 21 shots, turning 19 of them away. His record improved to 6-8-0 with the performance.

Backstrom has struggled to get offensive support again this season, but the Wild managed to get 37 shots off on Stars goalie Alex Auld Saturday and scored three times. If the Wild offense can get going, it would greatly help Backstrom's Fantasy owners as he'd be able to pick up more wins. Until the offense performs on a consistent basis, Backstrom is just a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 Fantasy option. The Wild TG goes as Backstrom does.

| Niklas Backstrom faced a bit of an uncertain future heading into the 2008-09 season. He was entering the final year of his contract with the Wild and Minnesota wasn't yet ready to commit to the Finnish goalie beyond the upcoming season. Well, the 31-year-old netminder made the decision easy for Minnesota by setting many team records during an All-Star campaign. The Wild gave Backstrom his four-year extension in-season and now move on with him as their franchise goalie. Backstrom got off to a fast start with 13 wins in his first 20 outings. He won six or more games in a month four times, while appearing in a team-record 71 appearances by a goalie. He also set a franchise record with 37 wins and eight shutouts in a single season. Backstrom finished with a 2.33 GAA and .923 save percentage. He did most of this while getting sporadic offensive help from his teammates. Backstrom has won 93 times in 170 appearances since coming to the NHL in 2006-07. The Wild are moving away from a defensive system in 2009-10 under first-year coach Todd Richards, but Backstrom is still talented enough to stand on his own in net. He remains a viable No. 1 Fantasy goalie Draft Day. The Wild TG also has high-end Fantasy appeal. (Updated 8/17/09) |
