Eckford, a seventh-round pick from 2007, is off to a great start in his second AHL season with 15 points in 18 games and was named the league's player of the week on Sunday. The 24-year-old isn't much of a prospect, so don't worry about him in Fantasy play just yet. Murphy can also continue to be ignored.

| Cory Murphy didn't envision his return to North American hockey as being one big injury-marred merry-go-round. The former Colgate grad spent the first six seasons of his pro career overseas before signing with the Florida Panthers in 2007. His NHL career got off to a fast start (nine points in 12 games) before a shoulder injury would sideline him for several weeks. Murphy never rebounded. He still had shoulder issues at the beginning of 2008-09 and it would sideline him for several weeks again before Florida finally put him on waivers in mid-January. Tampa Bay would eventually add Murphy to their roster and use him extensively before a broken foot ended his season in mid-March. Murphy had five goals and 16 points in 32 games and has 33 points in 79 NHL contests the last two seasons. Murphy signed with New Jersey in the offseason, but he only got a one-year deal and it's a two-way contract. New Jersey has a pretty good stable of defenders, so Murphy is merely roster depth in the event of an injury. It's a real shame since Murphy is a pretty solid offensive blueliner. He is merely a Fantasy reserve for the deepest of formats Draft Day. (Updated 8/18/09) |
