Illness - (Updated - 7/4/12)
Brett MacLean, 23, experienced sudden cardiac arrest while playing a pickup game during the offseason in his native Canada, where the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests is just five percent. With no family history of heart disease, doctors inserted a defibrillator in his heart, which will prevent him from playing contact sports. MacLean ends his brief career with the Coyotes with five points in 18 games to his name. (Updated 10/10/12).
It remains to be seen how Brett MacLean, who suffered a cardiac emergency during the offseason, will approach the upcoming season. While MacLean is reportedly going to be fine, there's no word yet on how his recent medical condition will affect his availability in 2012-13. Should he be cleared to play, he'll likely begin the season in the AHL where he tallied 48 points in 63 games last season, and could be called up in the event his depth is needed. (Updated 8/14/12)
