Powe elevated to top line: The Sports Xchange reports Flyers coach Laviolette made a statement Tuesday against the Blue Jackets when he yanked right wing Claude Giroux off the top line and moved him to third-line center, bumping Darroll Powe to the top line. "Claude has always played well in the middle," Laviolette said. "He seems to generate a lot of speed. You saw the way he attacked the ice, he can get off the wall and come with underneath speed." (Updated 01/20/2010).

Laviolette said he likes the north-south speed Powe gives the top line and sees him as a player who can generate offense off the rush. The 24-year-old didn't score on Tuesday, but it seems he will get a chance to stick on the top line. He is merely a wait-and-see project. (Updated 01/20/2010).

| As an undrafted free agent, the odds were stacked against Darroll Powe making it to the NHL. But the Princeton grad still set out on a pro career in 2006-07, determined to make it to hockey's grandest stage. After paying his dues in the minors, Powe finally got the call in 2008-09 from the Flyers. He developed into a solid fourth-line center and appeared in 60 games as a rookie. Powe compiled just 11 points (six goals) and a minus-8 rating, but he won 48.7 percent of his faceoffs (128 of 263) and was fifth on the team with 124 hits. Powe did enough to earn himself a roster spot heading into 2009-10. He doesn't have much Fantasy appeal in standard formats, but he does pass as a flier in leagues that reward heavily for short-handed and faceoff stats. (Updated 8/18/09) |
