Valiquette not ready for recall: The Sports Xchange reports Rangers G Chad Johnson, who was recalled last week to replace demoted backup goalie Steve Valiquette, was sent back to Hartford (AHL) to play in a 5-2 loss Friday against Portland and then brought back to the Rangers to serve as Henrik Lundqvist's understudy Saturday night against Buffalo. "It's a mess," coach John Tortorella said of the backup-goalie situation. "We sent a veteran (Valiquette) down and he's still struggling down there and we don't even know what we have in Johnson as far as the backup." (Updated 12/13/2009).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Valiquette is 1-2-0 with a 4.95 GAA and .849 save percentage in three appearances with Hartford. It's easy to see why New York isn't ready to bring him back. It's obvious the Rangers want a proven NHL goalie as a backup to Lundqvist, so Valiquette better find his game soon or worry about NHL exile. Keep Valiquette off Fantasy rosters until further notice. | It seems Steve Valiquette is resigned to the fact he is destined to be a backup NHL goalie. The 32-year-old netminder has yet to find a starting job since making his NHL debut in 1999-2000 with the Islanders and has appeared in just 40 career games. He has spent the last few seasons with the Rangers as a backup to Henrik Lundqvist and will fill that role again in 2009-10, as he enters a walk year. Valiquette set a career high with 15 appearances in 2008-09 and also tied a career-high with five wins. He went 5-5-2 with a 2.84 GAA and .907 save percentage. The highlight of his season was a 21-save shutout of the Maple Leafs Oct. 17. As a seldom-used backup, Valiquette doesn't have a lot of Fantasy appeal. He is pretty much just a handcuff option for Lundqvist owners. He can't make a difference in Fantasy if he doesn't get the chance for regular minutes. (Updated 8/24/09) |
