| Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake is the first person to tell you he wasn't any fun to be around during the 2007-08 season. He had a chip on his shoulder after he was diagnosed with a treatable form of leukemia at the start of the year. Friends and family urged Blake to take some time off from hockey, but the Minnesota native insisted on playing after signing a five-year contract in the offseason. Blake clearly wasn't his normal self as he scored just 15 goals while playing a full schedule after totaling a career-high 40 in 2006-07 with the Islanders. Blake carried some of those same frustrations into the 2008-09 season and it once again affected his play. Finally, first-year coach Ron Wilson had enough. He benched Blake in November in an effort to send a message. Blake received it loud and clear. He cleaned up his act and returned to being a top offensive threat. Blake had 53 points in his final 59 games and became a star scorer for the Maple Leafs. He led the team with 25 goals, 63 points, five game-winning scores and 302 shots. Blake fell apart a bit toward the end of the season after Dominic Moore was shipped to Buffalo, but he is finally back in his comfort zone and producing on the ice. View Blake as a No. 5 Fantasy forward Draft Day with room to improve. (Updated 8/19/09) |
