| Fantasy Analysis |
Lucky for Havlat the Wild don't play again until next Wednesday against the Bruins. He has plenty of time to rest. Havlat has been mired in a scoring funk for several weeks after totaling five points in his first three games with the Wild. We are kind of shocked Havlat is struggling since he is in an offensive system. But then again, he landed a big contract in the offseason and his motivation probably declined a little after a career year. Havlat still has high-end Fantasy potential, but he is a risky start until he is healthy and productive. (Updated 11/20/2009).

| The hockey gods were smiling down on Martin Havlat in 2008-09. The oft-injured forward stayed healthy the entire season, playing in a career-best 81 games, which allowed him to cash in with a huge free-agent contract from the Wild (six years, $30 million) in July. Havlat has always been a talented skater, but we never really got to see his full potential because of nagging injuries. We kept waiting for another ailment to pop up in '08-09 that would sideline Havlat for an extended period. It never came and Havlat was instrumental in leading the Blackhawks to the Western Conference finals. He led Chicago and tied for 22nd in the NHL with a career-high 77 points. He also led the team with a career-best 48 assists and was second with 29 goals. He was ninth in the NHL with a personal best plus-29 rating and collected 51 points in his final 47 games. He also netted 21 goals and 51 points on home ice, both tying for the seventh-best mark in the NHL. Havlat paced Chicago with 22 multi-point outings, which included a season-high three points seven times. Havlat was adamant about staying with the Blackhawks and it seemed the negotiations were getting there. However, then Marian Hossa swooped in to steal Havlat's long-term deal (12 years, $62.8 million), so he headed north to Minnesota. Havlat is excited at the chance of replacing Marian Gaborik as Minnesota's go-to-scorer. First-year coach Todd Richards is installing an up-tempo offensive game which should suit Havlat just fine as long as he is healthy. Havlat remains a high-end Fantasy flier. (Updated 8/17/09) |
