Detroit not reuniting star forwards: The Sports Xchange reports despite his team's scoring slump, Detroit coach Mike Babcock is not inclined to reunite stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg on the same line. Babcock put Datsyuk and Zetterberg together midway through Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Atlanta and said, "Our team didn't play the same. We were better at the start of that game." (Updated 11/30/2009).

Babcock also is hesitant to put the two together on the road because opponents can concentrate their best checking line and shutdown defense pairing against them. Zetterberg leads Detroit with 26 points and Datsyuk is second with 19. They are really missing some productive wingers, but the duo continue to perform at high levels for Fantasy owners. It would be nice to see the duo work together, but as long as Zetterberg and Datsyuk are healthy, they are must-start Fantasy options. (Updated 11/30/2009).

| The arrival of Marian Hossa in 2008-09 had a profound impact on fellow Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg. The Swedish forward and 2007-08 playoff MVP, when Detroit won the Stanley Cup, would no longer be on a line with Pavel Datsyuk full-time. It didn't seem much of an issue in the beginning as Zetterberg totaled seven goals and 10 points in the first nine games. Unfortunately, he would score just 10 times over the next 36 games and saw many of his scoring chances go to Hossa. But as a true team player, Zetterberg didn't complain and helped Detroit in other ways. He picked up the effort on the defensive end and continued to find the open scorer. Zetterberg finished with his third 30-goal, 40-assist campaign in the last four seasons, but his scoring did drop from when he recorded a career-high 43 goals and 92 points in '07-08. Zetterberg finished with 31 goals, 42 assists and a plus-13 rating in 77 games. Still not bad numbers, but we know Zetterberg has the talent to do better. Hossa is now with the Blackhawks, so the scoring chances will once again be there for Zetterberg. He still remains and elite Fantasy forward in all formats. (Updated 8/17/09) |
