Beagle (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.Beagle wasn't expected to return to action until late next week at the earliest, so his deactivation will allow the Capitals to retain eight defensemen for the time being. The forward reported some improvement with his injury Tuesday, after he was able to skate prior to the Capitals' practice.

Coach Barry Trotz said Saturday that it's "safe to assume" Beagle (upper body) won't be ready for the Oct. 9 season opener with the Canadiens, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports.Trotz didn't list Beagle among the players he expected to open the season on injured reserve, however, suggesting the forward probably isn't looking at a long-term absence. In any case, with Beagle unlikely to be available to center the fourth line, Michael Latta is expected to assume those duties in the interim.
