Doughty fires home game winner: Wayne Simmonds and Drew Doughty scored in the final 1:46 and the Los Angeles Kings won their sixth consecutive game, 3-2 over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Doughty scored the winner on a power play with 27.3 seconds left. His shot from straight on beat the screened Martin Brodeur. The goal came 32 seconds after Devils defenseman Andy Greene was penalized for tripping.

Doughty finished January with two goals, 15 points and a plus-9 rating in 14 games. It was arguably one of the best months of his young career. It has been amazing how much of a breakout star Doughty has been in 2009-10, only his second year in the NHL. Keep him active in all Fantasy formats.

| Drew Doughty got a crash course in being a NHL defenseman in 2008-09, his rookie season. Most 18-year-old blueliners return to the junior team after being drafted to get a little more seasoning before making a splash in the NHL but not Doughty. Los Angeles immediately thrust him into the lineup after taking him second overall in the 2008 draft. They didn't play him sparingly either. Doughty was the Kings' top-logging defensemen (23:49 average ice time) and played in all but one game last season. He played at least 20 minutes in 76 games and 25-plus minutes in 34 contests. Doughty came into the league being touted as an offensive blueliner, and he definitely showed us some of his future potential. His 27 points were the most by a Kings rookie defenseman since Lubomir Visnovsky, another well-known offensive defenseman, had 39 points in 2000-01. Doughty tied for first among NHL rookie defensemen with 27 points and 21 assists, and tied for second among NHL rookie defensemen with six goals. He also ranked second among NHL rookies with 114 blocked shots and led rookies defenders with 126 shots. The only negative is that Doughty had a minus-17 rating. But that should improve over time.
