Carolina Re-Signs Gerbe For Two Years
Gerbe re-signed with the Hurricanes on a two-year, $3.5 million contract Tuesday. The 26-year-old set career highs in both goals (16) and points (31) last season, appearing in 81 games for the Hurricanes. It represented nice production after he was bought out by the Sabres just a season earlier, and now he'll be counted on to replicate those scoring numbers again in 2014-15, likely as a member of the team's second or third line.

Ville Leino placed on waivers for purpose of buyout by Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres will finally get out from under the disastrous contract granted to forward Ville Leino three years ago as he was reportedly waived for the purpose of buyout.
|After spending the previous five seasons in Buffalo, Nathan Gerbe enjoyed a very productive first season in Carolina. With 16 goals and 15 assists in 81 games, he matched the career-best 31 points he notched three seasons ago with the Sabres, and also saw his average ice time rise by almost four minutes per game (from 12:30 to 16:24) skating on the Canes’ third line with Patrick Dwyer and Riley Nash. Gerbe also set a new career-high in power play points with seven, after not seeing any meaningful PP time the previous two seasons with the Sabres. He re-signed with the Hurricanes on a two-year, $3.5 million extension in June 2014, so look for him to reprise a similar role in the lineup for the upcoming season. For those of you in deeper formats, Gerbe represents decent fantasy value as a late-round selection. (Updated 8/13/14) |
