| For as much as the Lightning hyped Steven Stamkos last season, we thought we were going to see our first 100-point rookie since Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby both accomplished the feat in 2005-06. To say the least, Stamkos fell way short of expectations. Stamkos, the No. 1 pick in 2008, was making the jump from junior hockey to the NHL. Tampa Bay immediately listed him as a second-line center behind Vincent Lecavalier, but at 18 years old, Stamkos just wasn't ready for the prime time. He struggled with his conditioning and all the pressure to be an impact player. Finally, coach Rick Tocchet pulled him aside and put him on a strict conditioning program trying to save his confidence. Tocchet should be lauded for his coaching efforts. The plan worked to a tee. Stamkos came on late in the season with 27 points (17 goals) in his final 32 games. He was became the second youngest player in NHL history to record a natural hat trick during his late-season splurge and also set a Lightning franchise rookie record with 23 goals. Stamkos had 46 points in 79 games, but wasn't in the race for the Calder Trophy, given to the league's top rookie. Still, we saw great progress from Stamkos and there is still plenty of hope he is going to live up to the expectations. Don't forget Lecavalier, who was the No. 1 pick in 1998, had just 28 points as a rookie and became a 50-goal, 100-point producer later in his career. Stamkos is definitely a candidate for a breakout Fantasy season in 2009-10. (Updated 8/19/09) |
