Bailey spent a game in the press box recently for his poor play and the second-year center definitely seems to have gotten the message. Coach Scott Gordon expects a lot from Bailey despite the fact he is behind John Tavares on the depth chart. Bailey is more valuable in the faceoff circle, so consider him a low-end Fantasy option. | While Josh Bailey was a top 10 pick in 2008 and being talked about as a player that had a bright future in the NHL, many analysts still figured that was way down the road and had the ninth overall selection headed back to junior hockey. It especially made sense after Bailey began the season on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. However in a shocking move, the Islanders opted to keep Bailey around in 2008-09 and begin his learning curve earlier than expected. Bailey definitely endured his struggles, including in the faceoff circle where he won just 41.1 percent of the time (332 for 807). But New York was pleased with his work ethic and feel he will be better prepared heading into Year 2. Bailey finished tied for 14th among NHL rookies with 18 assists, as well as tied for 21st in points (25), tied for seventh in power-play assists (8) and tied for 10th in power-play points (11). He finished the season on a strong note with nine points (five goals) in his last 20 games. The addition of No. 1 overall pick John Tavares definitely overshadows Bailey's progress, but he is expected to figure heavily into the Islanders' plans. Bailey is a developing offensive player, so consider him more of a low-end Fantasy option on Draft Day. (Updated 8/18/09) |
