| Fantasy Analysis |
Duchene had a career-best six goals in January and has totaled 24 points in his last 28 games. The rookie has only gotten stronger as the season has progressed, and he admits the offense has just come naturally as he has focused more on the defensive end. His recent play has made him a nice start in Fantasy. We could see it lasting since Colorado is in the thick of a playoff race. (Updated 02/05/2010).

Waiver Wire: Jussi what we see?
Jussi Jokinen is quietly putting together a nice stretch, but it hasn't been enough to get him added to the Finnish Olympic team. As Michael Hurcomb writes, it shouldn't stop owners from scooping him up.

| When Colorado took Matt Duchene with the third overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft, the 5-11, 200-pound center became the first player selected by the Avalanche franchise in the top three since the Quebec Nordiques chose Eric Lindros No. 1 overall in 1991. That year was their third straight season with the top pick after they selected Mats Sundin in 1989 and Owen Nolan in 1990. All three players went on to have great NHL careers, so Duchene has a tough legacy to follow. Duchene really shot up draft boards last season and was even talked about as the No. 1 pick. The Islanders eventually took center John Tavares, but the Avalanche is still getting a pretty special player. Duchene is being compared to Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic. He has quick feet and uses his speed to create scoring chances. Duchene had 31 goals and 79 points in 57 games last season for Brampton of the OHL. However, he has just two years of high-level junior hockey under his belt and his physicality might not be where it needs to be to play in the NHL in 2009-10. Colorado will look at Duchene during training camp, but he is more of a long-term Fantasy keeper until it appears he will make the Avalanche roster. (Updated 8/20/09) |
