Hedman already back in action: The Sports Xchange reports Lightning rookie defenseman Victor Hedman jumped right back into the lineup on Saturday against the Thrashers after sitting out the previous game as a healthy scratch following a tough week-long stretch. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 draft has exceeded expectations this season, but with mistakes ending up in his own net he began struggling with confidence. Hedman said the game off proved beneficial. "It looks much easier from up top," he said. "You can see all the plays and everything. It gave me a little feeling of what I should work on and what I should think of. I mean, I need to get back to the game I was playing earlier. I think December was a pretty good month for me, so I want to get back to that and to playing with confidence." (Updated 01/24/2010).

| Fantasy Analysis |
Hedman, 19, entered Saturday's game with four goals and 10 assists. He was second among NHL rookies in ice time (21:57 per game) and first in shifts (28.3 per game), but in the four games leading up to his benching, he was minus-6. He played more than 22 minutes in his return to the ice. Tampa Bay coach Rick Tocchet said he wanted to give Hedman a mental break to take some pressure off. He hoped having him watch a game from up high would lead to better decision-making. "I think that was his biggest issue the last two or three weeks," Tocchet said. "He was getting a little caught in between. Unfortunately, some of the mistakes he was making were costing us at crucial times." Hedman still has a bright future ahead. He just remains more of a long-term Fantasy keeper and low-end flier in seasonal formats. (Updated 01/24/2010).

Week 17 Fantasy Hockey Planner
Plenty of developments from around the league as the Olympic break draws closer. Will Jose Theodore continue his hot play of late? Just one topic that our Michael Hurcomb touches on in his latest Fantasy Planner.

| There is just one word to describe Lightning rookie defenseman Victor Hedman -- big. The 6-6, 220-pounder was taken second overall in the June NHL draft behind John Tavares, who was selected by the Islanders. Hedman was considered the top European prospect and was in the talk as being selected first overall. The Lightning were glad New York passed on Hedman since he gives their blue line an immediate upgrade. Hedman is lauded for his unique combo of size and speed. He moves very well for a big man and also has great hockey sense. Hedman can move the puck and is very shifty through traffic. He does need to work on being more aggressive on the offensive end since he has a heavy shot and being more physical, but he is still solid on the defensive end because of his hockey sense and his ability to make plays with his stick. Hedman spent the last two seasons playing with Modo of the Swedish Elite League. He had seven goals and 21 points in 43 games for Modo last season. While Hedman is a promising prospect, he has minimal Fantasy appeal in standard leagues because he will be a rookie blueliner adjusting to the NHL game. They don't typically excel on the offensive end. Hedman still remains a solid long-term keeper. (Updated 8/23/09) |
