John Tavares won't need surgery, says he'd play in Olympics again
John Tavares' season is done but the Islanders still got some good news on his injury front; he won't need surgery. The recovery period is in the 8-12 week range.
Islanders' Tavares Won't Need Knee Surgery
Tavares -- who suffered a torn MCL and torn meniscus during the Sochi Olympics -- will not need surgery to repair his knee, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.Though the injury was a season-ender for Tavares, the fact that he will avoid surgery is a positive development. The report indicates that Tavares is looking at an 8-12 week rehab/recovery period, a timetable that should enable him to enter training camp in good health.
Isles' Tavares Placed On IR
Tavares (knee) was officially placed on injured reserve Monday. It's merely a formality after Tavares was ruled out for the season after sustaining tearing his MCL and meniscus during the Olympics. A player of Tavares' caliber is simply irreplaceable for the Islanders, and the absence of their star could drastically diminish the production of linemates Thomas Vanek and Kyle Okposo.

Garth Snow angry over John Tavares injury, Olympic involvement
Islanders GM Garth Snow isn't taking John Tavares' season-ending injury too well. He took aim at the Olympic setup, calling it 'a joke.'
|John Tavares announced himself loud and clearly last season as one of the best players in the NHL. Tavares scored 28 goals in 48 games and surely would've potted 40+ had this not been a lockout-shortened season. He is a sniper that seems to be getting better and better each year and that should continue as the Islanders build up the talent around him. If Ryan Strome were to play on his line, it will give defenses another highly skilled forward to worry about and should give Tavares even more room to work his magic. A first-round fantasy pick in almost all leagues. (Updated 8/12/13) |
