| Fantasy Analysis |
Most goalies would have been yanked after giving up two goals so early in the game, but since Vesa Toskala is injured, coach Ron Wilson gave Gustavsson the chance to prove his resilience. The Swedish goalie did just that. A lot of folks believe Gustavsson has a bright future in the NHL, but he remains a No. 3 Fantasy goalie until further notice. The Maple Leafs TG is a low-end option. | The Maple Leafs might not have had a lot of important victories during the 2008-09 season, but they scored a huge win in the offseason by signing overseas import Jonas Gustavsson to a one-year contract. Toronto had some issues in net last season, particularly when Vesa Toskala went down with injury. Gustavsson was coveted by many teams, including the Stars, Sharks and Avalanche, but he felt Toronto was the best place for him to compete. Toronto general manager Brian Burke called the 24-year-old Swedish goalie "the best goaltender not playing in the NHL today." Burke rectified that issue and now "The Monster" is ready to take hockey's grandest stage. The 6-foot-3 Gustavsson led Farjestads in the Swedish Elite League last season to a championship after allowing just 14 goals in 13 playoff games with five shutouts. Gustavsson registered four shutouts during the regular season with a league-leading 1.96 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage in 42 games. Gustavsson is coming in to compete with Toskala, but after Toskala's bumpy season in '08-09, "The Monster" has a good chance to possibly snag the starting job. Gustavsson is more of a No. 3 Fantasy goalie or handcuff option for Toskala owners Draft Day, but there is also serious sleeper potential as well. (Updated 8/24/09) |
